Dunno, I think he understood the appeal of Sonic, in a way. He spoke of how Sonic is more of a metaphor character in the better stories of the games, and he is accurate that Sonic is a Flat Character, since he never changes as a character, yet others do around him.
The talk of the mandates made sense with Archie Sonic, who has a lot of different context around him, and to an extent too with Movie Sonic. Game Sonic and his similars? Guy hasn't changed since day 1, he has been written differently but is still the same guy.
To win, you need to adapt, and to adapt, you need to be able to laugh away all the restraints. Everything holding you back. The paragon take on Sonic is one that definitely feels insulated to the hardcore fandom. I've rarely seen the broader/casual audience ever get close to viewing the character that way, and most of the adaptations don't lean in that fashion either.
There's a general tendency I've noticed among some fans to elevate Sonic in that sense because of how meaningful and effective he (and/or the cast) were to them when playing select titles. Granted as someone who plays more for the gameplay and hasn't really been emotionally affected by virtually any of games' narratives I'm probably the worst person to offer a judgement, but him as force of nature just never really struck me as being that crucial to his presentation.

The Archie version does seem very different beneath the surface, due to originally being the SAT-AM version and therefore having traits that would be OOC out of context (like him being loyal to a kingdom for example, Sonic seems too much of a free spirit to be tied to any political and 06 and Black Knight establishes that it wouldn't work for game Sonic in different ways)
I have to ask just how different Sat-AM/Archie!Sonic is from Game/IDW!Sonic

Despite still being a free spirit, Archie sonic is the most by the book version of the character we probably ever got. There's no better example of this then the time Tails' parents wanted to overthrow King Max for being a godawful ruler and Sonic had no sympathy for his best friend's parents and physically fought Tails over it.

Well, it was. Might not be anymore, considering the new management's antics, and how advertisers and brands alike have been running for the hills in response.

"Cynic, n. — A blackguard whose faulty vision sees things as they are, not as they ought to be." - The Devil's DictionaryThe last game was in 2020...
The last main series game was in 2017.
What?
Rules of the Internet 45. Rule 45 is a lie. Check out my art if you notice. That's not too big a span of time.
Mario Odyssey was five years ago, and there's still no sign of the next main line Mario game, just the 3D World expanded port a couple years ago. I think the platform series churning out new games most frequently these days might be Kirby, with the big RTDL remaster this year (which might be a bigger or smaller undertaking than 3D World Bowser's Fury, depending on your POV), Forgotten Land this year, and Star Allies only four years before that.
It's just that Mario and Kirby both have a ton of spinoffs in between to make it seem like a shorter amount of time than it was. That said, it is a little long if you don't have much else you're developing at the same time (though as people keep mentioning, Sonic Frontiers got thrown out and restarted at some point in dev).

5 years was the same amount of time between Lost World and Forces.
It's long enough that you can't really say the series is churning out games...
At best, 2 games come out within the same year.

I disagree. Yes, Sonic is a hero. Yes, he can inspire others, that's what heroes do. But pushing him to be this flawless paragon is not only dubious, it makes him less compelling. You can have them represent intrinsic values without putting them on a pedestal, they can be be friendly and free-spirited without being a cardboard cutout. Sonic can be Sonic without being Jesus or Superman, because even though they say he's not a superhero, that's exactly what they want them to be.
