Back when Heroes first came out, it... did not have a good reputation with the fanbase. In the mid-00s, it was about as reviled as Shadow the Hedgehog was. It seems like its reputation has improved, or at least the dislike for it has cooled.

Nach jeder Ebbe kommt die Flut.I have fond childhood memories of playing Sonic Heroes back in the day.
Of course I was naive back then, didn't really interact with the internet. And was happier for it.
But yeah, that game was the shit for my school group way back.

"The Black Rage makes us strong, because we must resist its temptations every day of our lives or be forever damned!"![]()
It's funny you say that, because I distinctly recall ClementJ642 saying the exact opposite in his LP for Heroes lol The game was at least well-liked back when it first came out but became reviled after Shadow and 06 tainted everyone's perception of 3D Sonic. Granted, that's one person versus many others. But from the many videos and comments I've seen, general consensus on Sonic Heroes is that it's an overall fun game that's just marred from needing to play all four teams for the true final boss, which makes the undeniably many technical problems more apparent. Though I guess I wouldn't be surprised if Heroes was hated by the fanbase on release because it dared to be a plot-light game after the very plot-heavy Adventure 2.

It wasn't disliked for being plot-light, as I recall. Even at that time their was already a school of thought that the Genesis games were the apex of the series and that the 3D games should be judged solely by their similarity to the Genesis games, which led to things like Penny Arcade deriding Adventure 2 as "Tails' and Knuckles' Stupid Shitty Adventure" for having playable characters other than Sonic.
It’d be ironic if that were the cause of the complaints about Heroes, as that game’s about the closet thing to a direct 3D translation of the classic games so far in the whole series.

''Heroes'’ is what these people count as “complex gameplay”? That says a lot about them, none of which is good.
Heroes is an odd case because its not as beloved as the Adventure titles nor is it associated with the Dark Age like Shadow or 06. Its a strange side diversion in its emphasis that renders it the 3D Blast/Lost World of its time; a brief experiment in contrasting gameplay before the series largely continued with the direction it had before.
Its qualities are all over the place in that regard too; great aesthetics with weird character models, a wide cast with oddly simplistic characterization, and lengthy gameplay that can feel inflated thanks to required playthroughs in getting the true ending.
Interesting trope about Eggman and Sage I saw:
"Eggman's relationship with Sage is portrayed in a very different light in the Japanese dub than it is in the original English version. In English, Eggman develops a fondness for Sage over the course of the game, going as far as to consider her to be a daughter by the game's finale, while in Japanese, Eggman is portrayed as being rude and indifferent to Sage for much of the game, with his later development being almost entirely absent from the Japanese dub."
The Protomen enhanced my life.

Can't really think of any. I thought it was on that PS Classics thing Sony do but I guess not.
