If we’re going to spin off games, I’ll point out the whole MegaManZero gameplay would make perfect Amy spin off material. Of course this also includes MMZ’s punishing but fair Nintendo Hard difficulty.

It would be easy to implement Zero’s moves into Amy’s fighting style and make it feel natural. Ryujin goes without saying. Shield Boomerang = Hammer Toss. Down Attack EX skill = Tornado move (Sonic Battle). Dash = Giant Step (Advance). Dash EX skill = Hammer Spin.

As for bosses and enemies that’s easy. Metal Sonic liquid metal shenanigans mutating, corrupting, and possessing machines in a super Nightmare Fuel variant of the Maverick Virus. Example, a life size T Rex animatronic comes to life, terroizes a museum full of people, and mutates a flamethrower Breath Weapon.

All this culminating in a 3 phase Metal Sonic final boss that’s a homage to the legendary Omega fight. Normal Form -> mutates into that giant form in Mania -> FINALLY fight Neo Form (packing twin wrist mounted light sabers by assimilated Black Arms tech he found) in the ruins of Stardust Highway.

A tip if people are struggling in combat: Remember that parrying does NOT need to be timed! You can hold the buttons and it’ll automatically parry the next attack.

BTW, the spoiler rule is "for a month". So the day it released, and basically about 30ish days after. I forgot what day it released, but somewhere in December the normal spoiler rule would be up.

Has there been any word on how the game plays for PS 4? I've seen a lot of commentary on the Switch version and highlights of the next generation variations, but not much for 4.

I have a PS 4, and it’s occasionally rough. There’s little things here that you can tell are more polished in a more powerful system, that you can see let’s plays with PS 5’s not have to deal with.

It’s still great, tho.

Apparently The final two islands, Rhea and Ouranos, share the same assets and music as Kronos Island, and internal game files, including a prototype version of Kronos Island, reveal that they were all part of the same overworld. Other evidence includes large sections of Kronos Island never being visited in the world proper; Rhea Island clearly having the exact same minimap as Kronos Island, as well as parts of Kronos being visible on Rhea (like the Giganto boss arena) and vice-versa; Eggman mentioning in the Egg Memos that the Starfall Islands are made of three islands instead of five; Rhea Island lacking any collectibles or Cyber Space portals; and finally Ouranos Island not having a proper introduction, with Sonic suddenly arriving on the island with no indication of how or where it is in respect to the other islands.

There are references in the game's files that also imply that the Final Boss would had have a proper boss sequence, instead of an extended Bullet Hell battle followed by a Quick Time Event.

I wonder what happened there—ran out of time or budget?

Just got to the last island and YUP, reused assets ahoy.

Rhea literally has nothing to do but six platforming sequences and some lore cutscenes, and island itself is small. And then Ouranos decides to start dropping new enemies on you in literally the eleventh hour.

I just found some hilarious Youtube comments about the final boss. One wondered why if it was so powerful, The End uses time monologuing instead of just killing Sonic or the planet and someone else decided it's saying it for itself because it's scared of Sonic. "I just had a funny thought. On the outside, The End is all eloquent and demeaning but on the inside it's like, "Ok, ok, I'm definitely better than all these eldritch abominations he's already defeated. So what if he's killed a- oh my End, he's killed several gods before. I'm screwed."

Enjoying the game so far. At least towards the beginning, it actually does have a certain structure to it. A loose one, but its there.

I'm on PS 4, and it feels fine to me. Not that I have another console to compare it to.

Trivia of Frontiers. It appears Divergence wasn't planned, as an user found earlier dialogue in the files that has Knuckles in the opening cutscene alongside the trio.

I'm happy Divergence happened. Makes me wonder what more differences are between the drafts. It's the purple hair lady in those drafts? One day, I'll know.

The earlier draft has Knuckles saying he took measures to hide Angel Island from the world. I wonder what he meant by that.

I got Frontiers today and played 10 hours straight, which is not something I usually do anymore.

Aside from some frustration with controls (which might just be me being stubborn and using the high speed controls) I have found the game very fun so far, I'm on the third island.

Kind of redundant to say this in a Sonic game, but FUCK, the music is great.

On the subject of voice acting... I've actually never been a huge fan of Roger Craig Smith's Sonic. So I'd say I think he's fine in this game, but I'm not the best judge of it. He is pretty clearly going for a different tone, though.

Amy seems fine to me so far. I can see the argument about her feeling flat, but I'm not too bothered so far.

Absolutely no shade towards Ken Pontac or Warren Graff, but this is how you do meta humor in a non-obnoxious way.

I don't really see a difference. It's basically the same kinds of jokes they did. Same kind of set up, same kind of delivery. They're little difference between that and - say - "experience has taught me to investigate anything that glows" and the like.

If anything, so far I've found that Sonic - himself - has not really changed between writers, though maybe there's some changes further down the story. Some of the things around him have, but the way dialogue with him works, the humor he gets, his personality and such is more or less the same.

Part of it may also be that - as somebody on the thread pointed out a few pages ago - the format of most cutscenes hasn't changed either. Two characters stand around, have a short but direct bit of snappy dialogue, and then one leaves.

The main difference, at least for me, is that their writing tended to have to explain itself to the audience...a lot. One example is the scene from Colors when they do the classic "nothing can stop me now" "who you callin nothin" bit, and they take like 30 seconds to explain the joke and ruining it in the process.

Not that all jokes are like that, but more than enough than I really care for.

Ian's dialogue is simple and to the point and let's the joke speak for itself.

I don't remember an awful lot of explaining gags (the one from Colors is the only one I can recall, but then I didn't really play Forces).

I do remember a fair amount of "this entire cutscene is dedicated to this specific joke" bits, though, where executing different punchlines from the same setup was all the dialogue (the explaining gag is one of those). Your mileage may vary on it, I think - I remember it being fairly decent in Colors so long as the set-up wasn't too juvenile (the "Tails keeps mistranslating" one, for instance, segued a lot into "lol X gross word is funny" too much for my older brain, but on the flipside the broken robot one was funny).

But then, talking abotu Colors probably isn't the best example. Their writing didn't start getting bad until Lost World -> Forces anyway.

Colors does have Sonic address the audience early on...

Lost World had a bit more humor that may have resonated, it's not as obnoxious.

Some of it may have even been subtle, but it also had a "story" and a Tails portrayal that not many people liked.

So there's that.

Lost World's problem was that most of the characters had basically nothing to them but the jokes associated with them, and less the humor itself.

A lot of the jokes were good until you realized that that's all you were going to get out of Zazz, Zomom, Zik, Zeena, etc, and then realized these were the characters who were supposed to be carrying the story. If they have kept the flat characterization to one or two of them (Zazz, for instance, is fine just how he is) and made some of the others more interesting (Zeena and especially Zik, I think), it would've been fine.

Frontiers strikes me as an overcompensation in the opposite direction, though, but I'll talk more on why after I finish the game. Still, the sudden veer into bleak philosophizing in Amy's story outright made me laugh, and I'm pretty sure it wasn't intended to.

Oh I definitely agree there The fucking montage of Sage and Eggman's scenes (in the void) over a sappy song playing is too much. I get what they were going for, I really do, and I appreciate it but come on.

That being said, the plot being a little dumb is nothing new for Sonic games, and its nice to actually be interested in progressing the story again. Like yea, its dumb, but its fun dumb.

Incidently, Should we add Stick to the character pages? She's essentially a canon character now...Tangle too for that matter

I was that guy and during the whole Sage montage song, I just imagined all the times Eggman was abusive towards his lackeys like Orbot and Cubot, Snively, Agent Stone, Decoe and Becoe, Scratch and Grounder.
