I think it's especially jarring considering what Eggman was up to in the game directly preceding Frontiers XD It would be one thing if it followed another game that humanized him, like Sonic Adventure 2 or Lost World, but Forces had Eggman at 'drop a sun on his enemies' levels.

Nintendo likes depicting Bowser as a big lizard shaped teddy bear sometimes. He’s evil, but he’s also goofy, capable of kindness, has standards, is willing to fight against worse evils without much prompting, is a Father to His Men, likes go karting, etc. I agree that Galaxy was an exception - they never went back to that sort of plan for Bowser again after that.
I can’t really talk for Wily: my experience is colored by my primary engagement with the Megaman franchise being Battle Network, where Wily is more of a straight up terrorist iirc. I’ll take you guys’ word for it regarding Classic Wily.
I’ve long perceived Eggman as the most evil of the classic platforming villains, and that’s even only counting the games (not even, like, his way eviller Archie / Satam version), because he’s more committed to being evil than most. He’s gotten more affably evil over the years, to the point of being very fun, but no less malicious: his whole thing is still enslaving living beings as power sources, and he’s willing to do more harm for less reason than most of his contemporaries.

Awwww, I just saw a sad comment about the post-credits Frontiers scene.
"Speaking about that post-credit scene of Eggman trying to bring SAGE back. I dont think that is the original SAGE that he originally created, but a cyber space clone of her manifested by Eggman. This does bring the question that if love for a clone of someone is just as valid as their prime. My heart broke at the implication."
The Protomen enhanced my life.I agree that K. Rool is boatloads more evil than Bowser. Bowser is often painted as being capable of caring and compassion. K. Rool is a sociopath who threatens his minions at the drop of a hat. I also think he's kind of nuts. I don't know what made him hate the Kongs so much that he went out of his way to steal all their bananas back in the first Country, but i bet its a very minor slight, and K. Rool is just big into disproportionate retribution.

If the series wants it to be the same Sage, it will be the same Sage, regardless of how much more advanced bringing her back would be compared to anything Eggman has done before, so I'm not worried.

My musician pageDo you think Ian will write or be consulted on the next main Sonic game, or was this a one-off?
EDIT: Aww, found another sweet comment:
"For several modern games, Dr. Eggman has been as ruthless as his counterparts in Archie, SatAM, and IDW. But here? He discovered what he was lacking for all these years. "

The Protomen enhanced my life.That.
He also feels the need to explain a lot of things to the audience....then again given Sonic's target demographic, that's probably intentional.
I'm also not really a fan of how he writes Amy. In trying to address the complaints about her being an annoying fangirl, he basically stripped her of her quirks.
Also his pacing is wonky.
Like I said, I generally like him despite that.
A lazy millennial who's good at what he does.Evan does write Amy better than him, since she writes her with those quirks without making go Starlker With A Crush territory as some previous entries did.
To win, you need to adapt, and to adapt, you need to be able to laugh away all the restraints. Everything holding you back.Much better; Sonic vs. An Evil Distaff Counterpart is a lot harder to screw up than a Zombie apocalypse story.
