I've been going spare trying to figure what exactly playing this game keeps reminding me of. Like, there's a certain open world game experience this has been making my brain toggle back to with the constant stream of speed based minigames that dominates the playthrough. It's not like Breath of the Wild, which is more exploration focused - in this one, even exploration is tied to all the various minigames that are dotted around the map.

Finally realized it. It's like playing a collectathon version of Burnout Paradise.

I'm not sure yet how I feel about the story, mainly in regards to the final boss. I dunno if it's the Serial Escalation of a Planet Eater making anything other villains have done or will try to do seem trivial, the Fridge Horror of the countless worlds he successfully ate before his defeat, or that hypothetically he could have been beaten if any of the Ancients were hedgehogs with the ability to go Super—for something this strong I was wondering if Hyper Sonic would be required, especially when Sage said just Super Sonic wouldn't be enough.

EDIT: According to comments he seems to represent death itself as something you can only delay, not defeat. We've had Cosmic Horror stuff before but this feels more metaphysical than anything in the past, which to me makes Sonic being his usual self in the ending more jarring than it should be.

Okay, I think the best cyberspace level so far has been by far the City Escape one. It's the only one so far that transcends the "it's just a classic level thrown in" feel the rest has and actually seems to embody what I think they were going for with Cyberspace in general.

Yes, it's still composed of a lot of setpieces from Generations, but they're jumbled around, not uniform or with entire stages portions ported over verbatim, and feel like something new frankensteined together from pieces of something old. It resonates with the general cyberspace idea of being a hazy digital mismatch of jumbled together memories. The background and visual design helps. If the rest of them were like this, I doubt people would've complained so much.

Like, there's a strong sense of "I recognize this, but also I don't" in that one, whereas most of the other ones are more "okay, this again."

Also, the puzzle that gets you to that stage is likewise my favorite puzzle thus far.

Been watching cutscenes online.

It's interesting that Eggman is fully trapped in Cyberspace, Amy, Knuckles and Tails (who Sonic has just reached but not freed yet in the play through I'm watching) are halfway there, and Sonic alone is able to go back and forth. I wonder if there'll be a reason for that beyond because he's Sonic.

Those boss battles are a hell of a thing. The Wyvern fight is the second one I've seen, but it gave me Doomsday Zone vibes, what with being a Chase Fight while dodging (or deflecting) missiles and trying to catch the opponent.

I think Sonic Team is onto something, and I hope they think of how to make it better and not just toss it out completely.

There's be time for new gameplay styles at some point, maybe if they get confident to try spin-offs again, but for now, focus on making these even better.

The End's final boss monologue reminds me of SHODAN from System Shock. (I've never played the latter series but I know about it and SHODAN; I wouldn't be surprised if it was influential in some way.)

Okay I saw the scene where Eggman and Sage talk, and she muses that Orbot and Cubot would be her brothers since Eggman created her.

Yeah that confirms it. Also that is a hilarious image. Wonder what this makes Metal Sonic to her?

There is certainly going to be an awkward conversation with that time Metal backstabbed Eggman.

Then again, if the IDW comics are canon to the games, then Eggman still has a soft spot for him.

The best Cyberspace levels are the ones from previous games, go figure.

The Sky Rail one is pretty good too.

I meant the Adventure games specifically; some of them are original though like the first Cyberspace level you drop in, but they're mostly lifted from Sonic Adventure 2, Sonic Unleashed, Sonic Generations, and Sonic Forces.

Considering her origin and true allegiance, should Sage's character description be moved to the Eggman Empire page?

There was also Mecha, a robot 'daughter' for him. She was more of a Terminator type but he was regretful when she self-deactivated.

That concept has been around for a while in different ways; it's interesting to see a 'canon' version.

Ran into a game breaking bug. If you fast travel away from the first boss for any reason (like, say, to farm rings after a death, since dying leaves you with zero rings and cyclooping the ground where the boss is gives chump change), you'll pop into the first island with just the enviromment, no objects.

That is, no enemies, no npcs, no rails or interactable objects, and most importantly... none of the springs you need to get back up to the first boss. The game then promptly autosaves.

Soft lock, load an old save.

Oh that happened to me a couple days ago; died in a mini-game; spawned in the overworld with no objects.

Loaded the file before it autosaved itself.

Okay, third island and while I'm having fun, the controls and Sonic can be a bit janky. Really noticeable in Cyberspace.

Been enjoying the boss fights, but sometimes, mostly the Titan fights there's so much shit on the screen that it can get disorientating.

The QTE on the Wyvern confused me, got killed, and had to repeat the entire fight. Blargh. But other than that, it was super fun.

Lost about four hours of gameplay, though most of that was just wandering around and doing stuff that I now remember to locations of so it'll probably be a lot faster this time. I still have to do Big fishing, the City Escape Cyberspace level, all of my speed stat levelling and about half of Amy's quest again, tho.

Still, bugs that force me to reload and do things again is one of the best ways to kill my current drive to game, so I'll make up the rest of that stuff tomorrow.

I got questions:

Do the levels offer anything beyond "get to the goal ring at the end"?

Is there difficulty settings, if not, how would you guys rank it? I had trouble getting the Emeralds in Sonic Heores, so I want to know if I can handle something like this. Right now, my biggest concern is hitting the enemies by bouncing off the angles.

I almost quit the entire game when I had to restart after getting to the 3rd island.

Fortunately I knew what to do and just breezed it, but boy did that kill some of my enjoyment.

[up]...Are you talking about Frontiers?

There's two difficulty levels, though the game is unclear on how one changes the game vs the other.

The higher difficulty level is called "hi speed mode," and described as "for people used to Sonic games," so if it's speed related I assume it mostly affects things like timers, time trials and other stuff.
