The gameplay varieties are surprisingly not that varied overall. For 9 characters, it's not much that are unique styles overall. Rouge and Knuckles share a style, with Tails having similar applications to them, and arguably could be considered similar to Silver in the sense of weird abilities and flight to some degree(the dummy rings don't help). Amy stands out. Omega and Blaze are very similar, though I remember them also having a similar gameplay to Sonic and Shadow mainly(I can't honestly remember what made them different from each other). Sonic and Shadow are similar, though have the Mach Speed and Vehicle differences, and also the physical battle changes, but this also makes them akin to Knuckles and Rouge who simply have the core same style with just some new abilities that Knuckles doesn't have. Silver stands out in the same way Amy does. No real similarities to another. Amy's biggest similarity is she's a physical powerhouse, something Shadow kind of has.
So while there is variety, it's not truly that much. Reusing multiple abilities happens often, so you have platforming in general(Sonic, Shadow, Omega, Blaze), Sneaking(Amy), Telekinesis(Silver), Flight(Tails), and Hunting(Knuckles, Rouge). It does feel like an evolution of the regular Adventure games in that sense. Where only some are really different, but others are pretty similar. Albeit, Adventure 2 was the only one with straight cloned gameplay, whereas Sonic Adventure 1 had them all overall unique, but sharing abilities(which fits 06's style more).
My only opinion of the humans is that they are definitely too realistic. Yes, the anthros are more realistic than before, but not that much. Fix that, and it'd be pretty nice instead of clashing. Eggman's concept was neat, but him being the normal human design in general doesn't work. If he was the only human in the game, it may have worked. Besides that, the machines are also more realistic-like, so the style does clash, but only to a degree. They tried to give them all a realistic feel(it didn't work, of course). Eggman having techno goggles was a great idea, though. Even his design in the movie, which uses something akin to 06's design, didn't clash(but that's cause Sonic was actually more realistic than 06's version, so).
Shadow?Re:The Sonic comics. You wanna know what's really weird? I was thinking of the backup story to Issue 38, where Tails is sick and Sonic tells him a story where four of the Freedom Fighters are the Fantastic Four, and fight a Robotnik/Galactus hybrid. I typed "Galactus Robotnik" into Google, assuming that results were going to be from that issue. Nope. Apparently they did the Robotnik is Galactus thing a second time that I was unaware of.

Funnily enough that issue was around where I started collecting the comics.
I know about Knack/Fang shooting Mina, that happened in Issue 122. What's Big Mouth Sally? Is it this?

Yep, that's the one.
Issue #134, aka the one that gave us "The Slap".
I assure you, I'm perfectly trustable personWhat's most surprising is that this was an old comic, and hasn't happened with IDW yet.
Like, everything in IDW gets a TMNT crossover. It's only a matter of time before there's a Ghostbusters crossover, too. Or a Transformers crossover.

While neither Ghostbusters nor Transformers has crossed over with TMNT, they have crossed over with each other.
