If it means showing more characters and using Frontiers' style then sure.

Frontiers would have been perfect to show off a new cast of characters, even if they were only exclusive to this game.

I know it goes against my dislike of character bloat but I'd be all for it. I think one problem I had with Sonic's friends always appearing was that sometimes they had no reason to be there. They were just there to be there, or for their fans. I thought the Storybook game sjust outright forced it by having them play famous literary characters for...no reason. So having an entirely different supporting cast would be cool.

Essentially. A lot of these characters need a long break to make them feel fresh again.

I feel like other characters HAVE had a break. Only Tails and Amy were in Unleashed, and just barely. Just Tails in Colors. The whole cast was back in Generations but didn't do much. And Tails, Knuckles, and Amy made appearances in Lost World, but very little involvement.

Forces brings everyone back, true, but.. Forces sucked for a lot of reasons. Having the extended cast return is probably on the low end of its issues (though, the poor writing hurts them, admittedly).

[up][up] Yea, but we haven't gotten anyone new to compensate; we've just been stuck with Sonic, Tails, and Eggman as the primary recurring characters while they half-ass everyone else.

I'm talking a full on new cast with no cameos from anyone prior.

On the subject of Sonic characters, I was thinking recently that if you actually look at it, the "Classic" era actually introduced about the same number of characters as the "Adventure" era did. Of course, you could debate it some since the Adventure era games tended to have more one-off side characters and villains, but you look at just "major" characters, basically I'm defining that as playable character or a reoccurring villain, then it's about the same.

When it comes to the complaints about Sonic having too many characters in the 2000s, I think it's more a matter of how visible they were. First off, Heroes and 06 tried to stick in as many playable characters as they could in their own ways, which resulted in them having twelve and nine playable characters respectively. Outside of those, the most number of playable characters a mainline or spin-off platformer game had was five (Knuckles' Chaotix and Advance 3) or six (Adventure 1 and 2). And second, a lot of characters are introduced in spin-off games like racing games, and I think those were just more visible in the 2000s. A lot of people didn't play or remember the old spin-off games, so characters like Fang or Mighty are kind of obscure, let alone characters like Ray or Bark. The 2000s spin-off games I think were advertised more and had more direct involvement by Sega (Battle and Riders were even made by Sonic Team themselves).

Maybe there was also just a fandom disconnect. Because old fans didn't play those old spin-off games much but did seem to be more into other outside material, the old fanbase that was dedicated enough to make fanart or whatever focused more on the central characters and SATAM/comic characters. The fans in the 2000s obviously didn't care about that latter group of characters much, and instead had a bunch of new game characters they focused on.

The IDW cast would be a good start for getting fresh faces in. More copium powered options would involved goring to most (read: anyone but Penders) of the people that were with Archie during their own comics and try to license or buy their charterers from them and look into getting the SATAM cast in.

All option are pretty unlikely TBH, even in spite of Tangle and Whisper getting in that Forces runner game.

[up][up]Likely or not, I have to assume the rights situation with the IDW cast is more mutually favorable than... whatever the fuck was going on with Archie, so I wouldn't totally discount them showing up in a mainline game.

Frontiers would have been perfect to show off a new cast of characters, even if they were only exclusive to this game.

Yeah. I remember when we got our very first look at Frontiers, one of my initial thoughts was "is this going to be a game that separates Sonic from everything?" They definitely could've made it into the first game since the Storybook games to have Sonic in an entirely new setting with very little that's familiar, without much problem.

Heck, they might just be hiding their role in the plot for spoilers purposes, but based on what we've seen so far Sonic's existing cast doesn't have too much of a role in the story anyway.

With that in mind, I almost want to say that if Frontiers didn't do it, they probably just don't have any interest in it.

[up][up]Yea, I find that to be a shame to be honest. I know everyone complained about having new characters, but the flipside is that we kind of have a very stagnant cast going on right now.

I would say they should do things with the established cast, but they don't do that either.

I think a decent compromise would have to have less famous members of the cast in a game. Get something where Sonic in a mainline game has to work with Blaze and the Chaotix against the likes of Mecha Sonic and that would be novel while not having to introduce new characters.

Jon from Good Vibes Gaming shows of a recreation of Speed Highway from Sonic Adventure on the DS. It does play on actual hardware.

I say it's a recreation and not a port because physics had to be built from scratch and thus don't match the original game. But it's still pretty cool.

I think something like an enhanced port of Sonic Adventure on the 3DS could have some decent numbers. A full blown Chao Garden on a portable system would have sold a hell of a lot copies by itself.

Definitely, especially since the 3DS could handle games like Tales of the Abyss which were on the more powerful PS2. Heck it makes me imagine the idea of Sonic Team remaking Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 instead of doing Lost World, possibly with the 3DS being straight ports of the originals.

Honestly, I love how the Storybook games used the previous characters, giving them a neat alternate universe role, while being clearly a different character to begin with.

But to each their own.

Frontiers I mostly likely will wait on to buy, as I do most new games these days. My money is tighter now than ever with Yugioh prices going up for boxes and other various important stuff.

So, I just got both episodes to Sonic 4 on my Xbox. Beat Episode I and started Episode II.

I is a decent overall game but isn’t a very great one. Honestly the difficulty was either too easy or too hard depending on the Act. The Final Boss is kinda tedious. I couldn’t get Super Sonic because I sucked at the special stages.

II so far is better. Getting Emeralds actually feels easier in this one because you can telegraph your failures and reset before you officially fail.

That seems to be the consensus on Sonic 4. Episode 2 definitely feels like the devs learned from the first one... but it doesn't seem like the gaming public really cared by that point, probably on account of the first one sucking, so the series just kind of petered out.

I'd be curious about what Episode 3 could have been, but we've gotten way better games that fit the "classic Sonic redux" bill since then.
