I played a mod for SA2 that allowed a Chao to accompany the player character into levels. Don't think there was any practical use, but it was nice flavor.

A more human side to Eggman, huh?
Well, Ted Bundy and any other evil fella in real life were also human. Like Ronald Mcdonald.
To win, you need to adapt, and to adapt, you need to be able to laugh away all the restraints. Everything holding you back.
Also, the chao in that game was kinda more similar to accessories randomly selected from a pool... Kinda dampens the appeal IMO.
Chronicles is the worst Sonic game I've ever played. We could have got something fun and charming with funny npc dialogue like paper Mario but instead we got a game with poor controls, poor plotting, and a lawsuit from the man who thinks he owns echidnas and the "floating island". Like not using Eggman, he refuses to accept angel island as the modern name.
see my completed Tangled (Varian) fanfic collection! https://archiveofourown.org/works/24467056/chapters/59049532I mean... as much crap as I'll give Eggman for turning into an ineffectual comedic villain who programs his own robots to make fun of him, and the cliche of Sonic and Eggman forming an Enemy Mine being well-worn out by that point, it is the first time he genuinely succeeds at taking over the world.
Like apparently Sonic being gone for any extensive period of time means Eggman just takes over.

For all the game's faults, I'm not gonna blame it or any of the people who worked on it for any of the legal mess.
It's not specifically Sonic related, but he did get the idea from hearing people's thoughts on something from Origins. Plus I just want to change the topic so we don't have to talk about Chronicles. Anyways, Pariah made a video giving his thoughts on the lives system.

No rain could douse the flames that burn within me!Fangame of the day: Sonic and the Fallen Star
, it looks really neat with its own take on the running animations and a completely fresh soundtrack.

I agree, lives are awful and bad and don't belong in 90% of modern games.
Off the top of my head, the best use case for them I can think of is adding them to a roguelike as a way of making said roguelike more accessible to players (given that genre had previously died out because it's inherently such a punishing style of game, and mainly came back through mixing in with other genres)
I'm fine with lives personally and don't see a genuine problem with them in retro games, but the invention of save systems was obviously an improvement. I'd rather Sonic not get rid of extra lives just to be modern. Its still part of the aesthetic that I enjoy and removing it would distance me from the franchise.
Lives are fine - even preferable - with games like traditional Sonic or Mario where levels, even with checkpoints, are short and made to be replayable.
It’s only in longer games with more involved levels where they really become undesirable. Otherwise, they represent a level of stakes to the challenge that games of that type tend to have to find some means of replacing if they want to maintain the substance.

One crazy idea could be to have the chao serve some gameplay purpose in the regular Sonic stages ala Cheese.
idk what that purpose would be, but hey I really hate the emblems tied to Chao races/karate BECAUSE of the grind involved.
