That and the entire motion controls element has always made the games a tough sell to anyone outside the hardcore fandom. "Sonic interacts with genies and the characters of King Arthur" on top of (seemingly) using gimmicky waggle interaction feels like a recipe for disappointment to casual fans, regardless of how well executed the gameplay or story actually is.
Vampire Rouge and Frankenstein Tails I get. Any particular reason for Mummy Knuckles and Vampire Hunter Shadow?
Just picking ones that kinda seemed to fit. Mummy monsters are resurrected with the rage and curses of the past, and that more fits Chaos, but it's thematically appropriate for the Echidna tribe in general.
And Shadow as a vampire hunter is to make him an anti-hero/anti-villain opposing all the monsters, and also because Shadow uses weapons and vampire hunters tend to use some really crazy gadgets for hunting monsters. Also vampire hunters are edgy, and Shadow in a Van Helsing outfit would slap.

IIRC, it was originally going to be called "Hog-wolf", but tons of people online were already calling it "Werehog", so Sega decided to just roll with it.
Maybe both? I like the idea of the classic "vampire teams up with vampire hunter" shtick, but actually both are on the villain's side.
I'm already using Dr. Frankenstein as Tails, but that raises the question of who Eggman would be. Dr Frankenstein fits him better than Tails, but if Sonic is a werewolf and Shadow is a vampire hunter, the idea seems to be flipping the script on who's good and who's bad in classic monster stuff. Maybe Eggman would be a more good monster doctor, maybe he's The Fly?
Also, Witch Amy. She flies on her hammer instead of a broom.

I was waiting for somebody to confirm that because as I said, I could totally buy that being a thing Sonic did in that era.
But that scene is from “Shadow the Hedgehog”?
That brings up an interesting question: what games are the best for just rushing through, all quick reflexes and reaction timing?
I'm not sure what to curse more, the ever archetypal Unpleasable Fanbase of the zeitgiest that made "were-" associated with lycanthropy despite it being the part that means "man"!

It doesn't sound likely...
Rules of the Internet 45. Rule 45 is a lie. Check out my art if you notice. Not even just the motion controls but the fact that the games are essentially on rails runners with awkward mechanics and gamefeel. These elements have been received very negatively overall throughout the years, and even most of the vindication these games have gotten from the Sonic fanbase has to do with their story and presentation rather than gameplay.
Outside of the fact that it shouldn't really be...
Yes, the fight against Metal Sonic is recreation of the final boss of Sonic 3.

You know, I think my biggest problem with the Werehog is that it's absolutely nothing like a werewolf and has nothing to do with classic monsters. One trailer for Unleashed had Werehog Sonic in an old ruined mansion and I thought it was gonna be Sonic meets classic monsters. Like, I thought we were gonna get Vampire Rouge, Dr. Frankenstein Tails, Mummy Knuckles, Vampire Hunter Shadow, shit like that.
But no, planet god life energy nonsense. Sonic has full control over himself as a Werehog and he gets weird gross stretchy limbs like he's Monkey D. Luffy or some shit.
