Yes, celebrate the same games twice...(I mean of course)
That's how ya do an anniversary.
Rules of the Internet 45. Rule 45 is a lie. Check out my art if you notice.Sonic 1 & 2 needed more levels.

I won't take anything less!
Go to war with the Jackson estate if that's what's stopping you!
Give it back to us Sega! You have to! You have to!
One Strip! One Strip!Yeah, Generations was solid all around save for the Excuse Plot, but that wasn't its appeal.
...well, I suppose he wasn't wrong! :D
I think it's way too soon. We've only gone through 2 generations of Sonic games and there's not really a "third" to encourage a Generations 2. It'd be nice to have some other Classic and Modern stages reimagined, but I doubt there's enough to justify an entire sequel.
Much as I like some of the stages in Advance, Rush, and Colors - I wouldn't call any of them iconic or worth putting into a game that celebrates Sonic's greatest moments.
In a recent issue of the IDW series there's a scene where Shadow could have captured a certain someone, but chose not to teleport and do so. Others say it's because he's still weakened by earlier events, and the Wiki claims he can't do Chaos Control without an emerald.
However, he clearly does it in 2006's opening , which I must also note is the last time my favorite version/characterization of Shadow actually looked cool. He just busts into Eggman's base single-handedly and steals the scepter of darkness, unleashing an UNSPEAKABLE EVIL.

I don't think waiting for an arbitrary amount of time to revisit the last undisputed 3D success the series had is a good idea. There's plenty of good Sonic history that can easily fill a game right now.
Especially for a group like Sonic Team that already has a known problem about not striking when the iron is hot.

Why stop? Sonic sometimes feels like the only series that gets complaints like that. Practically every other long running platforming series - heck, most long running series in general - has a stable cadre of older stages and mainstay concepts that are in every game. I remember I used to joke that you'll never see a "Mario Generations" game, because every Mario game is like that.
Sonic Team is really the one to look for for a company that does "we gotta reinvent ourselves" too much, not too little. And ironically, as a result they've created a lot of diverse ideas, and most of that well of content is just sitting there, not really being used despite being positively received.
The only problem I really have with Sonic Team's repeating of levels these days is the fact that they only ever pick the same ones, tbh.

To transfer over a point:
Sonic Generations isn't the start of Green Hill overuse.
It's in the majority of Sonic games in some form or variation.
Chemical Plant has recently gotten the dual overuse with Green Hill due to getting paired with from Generations to Forces.
Rules of the Internet 45. Rule 45 is a lie. Check out my art if you notice.
Good point.
It’s just that most of the Green Hill clones weren’t a rehash of the original. That one technically starting in SA 2.
Then we have Angel Island Zone deciding to spice things up by setting things on fire.
AAAAUUUUGGGHHHH!!!!Imo, if I were to make a Generations 2, I'd do a twist and start with what were the later levels of earlier games, and then make the hardest levels what were the earlier levels of later games.
I would also add one stage per set, for handheld levels. And one more boss per set, so both Classic and Modern have bosses in each group.
So, something like:
Classic:
- Sonic 1: Scrap Brain
- Sonic 2: Mystic Cave (I would've picked Oil Ocean, since that's a later level, but for some reason that has gotten its fair share of repeats over the years)
- Sonic 3&K: Carnival Night Zone
- Sonic Triple Trouble: Sunset Park
Adventure:
- Sonic Adventure: Twinkle Park
- Sonic Adventure 2: Metal Harbor
- Sonic Advance Series: Music Plant
- Sonic Heroes: Hang Castle
Modern
- Sonic Rush Series: Leaf Storm
- Sonic Unleashed: Mazuri - Savannah Citadel
- Sonic Colors: Starlight Carnival
- Sonic Mania: Studiopolis
And that's without maybe going into the idea of adding another era, mostly because I'm going back and forth about whether that might be too many stages or not.
Already this set up is omitting Sonic CD, 06, Sonic 4, and Forces, and from one stag of each is enough just on their own to fill a whole era even with the "add an additional one per era" idea.

Ooh, that'd be cool.
Or, like stages from Sonic 3D Blast. I wonder how they could translate Rusty Ruin's spinning gimmick into traditional platforming?
Or Spinball. Toxic Caves is a stages I've always wanted to see interpreted as a regular stages. A massic noxious tunnel with loads of stage hazards and pinball elements? Sounds great.
I also thought it'd be cool idea to make a stage that composites elements from Sonic Jump, Sonic Runners and Sonic Dash.

There's loads more stages they can take from though?
