And also because he knew he would be stuck either making or managing Sonic games

Yuji Naka cemented his name in the history of video games by programming the original Sonic the Hedgehog. But Naka, once defined by his time at Sega, has now been outside of the company for nearly six years, after forming his own studio, Prope. And it seems he couldn't be happier.

"One of the reasons I left Sega was, if I stayed there, I would have had to just make Sonic games," he told Polygon in an interview at Prope's Tokyo headquarters. "Right now I don't have to make Sonic anymore, so I'm enjoying that freedom a lot."

Freedom is the real good.

He's right too, Sega's done nothing but make Sonic games for a long time...

Have they even made a new IP recently?

A new IP? Not that I know of. But non-Sonic games? Off the top of my head, they have Yakuza, Puyo Puyo, the Phantasy Star Online 2 remake, games under Atlas such as Persona...

Yeah, I can relate to Naka as an aspiring content creator. Most people in art mediums love the creative freedom. Being stuck to one thing for too long ruins your drive. Seen it too many times.

While he’s happy that he can work on new things, he clearly has a soft spot for Sonic since he supported Sonic Mania. Like not wanting to work on it forever and actually hating it are different things.

Some creators want to work on new things while others enjoy working on projects on a more lifetime basis i guess.

Besides he jumped ship when the going was good. He’s not attached to 06 is he?

Looks like he had a hand in Shadow and Rush (and Riders) before he left.

You also have to consider what's being left unsaid too. Some of these people might have jumped ship because they were tired of Sega's bs. As someone else already mentioned, I'm betting Iizuka is responsible for the little quality we have maintained in the main series. Also he's pretty much the only reason we got Mania.

Guh.

How'd he let that happen?

Did they put a gun to his head?

I mean, that's literally the game that convinced everyone Shadow was a massive Edgelord (before that term was a thing). You'd expect Naka would have made sure to keep him in character, amnesia or not.

I remember one time I had a game idea for a modern game after Forces where Sonic and Cream are the playable characters. But people didn't like the concept, so I came up with a sequel for where Shadow is the main playable character with Rogue, Omega, and Sonic as playable supporting characters. . So I have If you could design a Sonic game where him and two-three other characters are playable, which random selection would you pick? Just one catch: Tails and Knuckles can't be playable in the same game.

[up][up] Maybe that's why he left hehe.

Shadow wasn't even supposed to be in Heroes originally, at least not as a playable character. Sega prob started pushing for it after they realized how popular he was.

Going back to the canon Shadow route for a moment, I've actually had a pretty good thought experiment in my head for a while about how it works.

Westopolis: Neutral Route. Shadow doesn't know who to trust yet, and so Black Doom decides to give a demonstration of what he's capable of to sway Shadow to his side leading to...

Glyphic Canyon: Dark Route. Shadow, now seeing that Black Doom can use Chaos Control like him, is curious about him and decides to assist him for the time being. Leading to...

Creepy Castle: Hero Route. Now this is where it gets interesting. I can't logic out why Shadow would be here beyond striking out on his own a bit while Black Doom raises the ruins for combat. But one thing I do know is that in the Expert Mode comments, Cream mentions Shadow helping her and Cheese a while back. This is the only time a mission objective is directly mentioned in Expert Mode. And I feel it makes sense. Who is Shadow's Hero partner in Creepy Castle? Amy. Who helped Shadow realize what Maria really wanted? Amy. Being in her presence again gets Shadow to start remembering Maria more, and starts swaying him back to the good side leading to...

Sky Troops: Hero Route. Sky Troops can only logistically happen in a route where Shadow activated the ruins in Glyphic Canyon, ergo you really shouldn't be here if you did Neutral or Hero, then went from the Carnival or Prison Island to here. Anyways, Shadow's now back with the Black Arms and Eggman attacks. Being in the doctor's presence reminds Shadow of Gerald, and more of the ARK. Confused by these returning memories, he decides to help Eggman and betrays Black Doom. Then while the ruins are weakened enough to give Eggman's armada a fighting chance, Shadow warps off in pursuit of the doctor leading to...

Space Gadget...BUT!: Recall for a moment where Shadow winds up in the cutscene leading to Space Gadget. That's right, Iron Jungle, where he would see the Shadow Androids for the first time if he actually went there. Its a little bit cheating but lets say for the sake of logical consistency in this series of events Shadow also finds the Androids too. Then, confused, he wanders off and runs into Sonic and friends going to the ARK. Now Shadow's left with another confusing contradiction in his memories as he flies off into space. From here we go to the Hero Route again, as Shadow racing with Sonic reawakens even more memories from SA 2, reminding him more about Maria and Gerald. Then we go to...

Final Haunt! ...Sort of: Now for the last bit of blending stories together. One other thing that comes up in the Expert Mode dialogue is the GUN Commander wanting to have dinner with Shadow out of forgiveness for what he had accused him of. Yet, the only time the two meet is before Cosmic Fall, discounting Diablon. But his past never comes up in the Diablon fights. Recall how entering Final Haunt takes place in the same room as the lead up to Cosmic Fall, where Shadow meets the GUN Commander. Sure its probably a little silly to have Sonic there watching the Commander put a gun to Shadow's head but hey this game is silly. It helps affirm a little more of Shadow's worries and doubts going into the last stage.

Now here's where it'll get interesting.

In this series of events, Final Haunt does not actually happen. It can't. Shadow has all seven Chaos Emeralds going into Last Story. That means he can't have fought Black Doom or Diablon because that'd make no sense with the Last Story. So what happens instead?

Black Doom's still busy with Eggman but obviously is about to run back to the Black Comet because Shadow's on there. Sonic probably splits off to go take down the Black Arms. Then that leaves Shadow alone to go find the remaining two Chaos Emeralds. I feel like it makes more sense for the Black Arms to have a couple Chaos Emeralds on their own to show their competency.

Then we go into the Last Story as we know it, but there's a few loose ends to tie up.

The Chaotix? Charmy's a goober but I think he'd be able to get the five top secret discs just fine, then meets up with Vector and Espio in Eggman's now unoccupied base to get the information they need from his network. Then they join Sonic's team on the ARK, where they tackle Cosmic Fall together to FIND THE COMPUTER ROOM.

Rogue, Knuckles, Tails and Amy? Well Tails was obviously flying the ship to the ARK, Knuckles already knows what's going on cause he was in Glyphic Ruins. There its easy to say Amy and Rogue caught up after dealing with Cream and Death Ruins respectively.

Eggman? I imagine he was planning on sending the Shadow Androids after the Black Arms. But lets just say a certain E-Series robot wiped them all out before he could, hence why they aren't in any other games. Then he just winds up going to the Black Comet in hopes of snagging the Chaos Emeralds while everyone's busy, only to run into Sonic.

And bada-bing bada-boom, it all makes sense. Heck there's enough wriggle room to fit in The Doom and Lost Impact as playable flashbacks for Shadow in between Cryptic Castle/Skytroops and Sky Troops/Space Gadget respectively.

[up][up][up]I think a multi-character game with Sonic, Blaze, & Shadow could work pretty well, allowing for a similar enough platforming that there would be no need to invent some dubious new gameplay style, but also different enough to allow a different sense when playing as them. Utilize elements like Chaos Control and so forth for Shadow while allowing the Fire element to have effects for Blaze.

Even story wise, an excuse plot is fairly easy to come up with via Eggman and Nega teaming up once again via utilizing Gerald Robotnik's research for some scheme, thus pulling all three of the heroes into stopping them. Throw in some banter between an initially conflicting Blaze and Shadow with Sonic stuck having to mediate, and you're basically there.

[up][up] SATAM also gave Sonic an uncle and Robotnik a nephew; the former was carried over into Underground.

Speaking of, I find it humorous that basically every piece of Sonic media besides the games themselves gave Robotnik/Eggman some sort of henchmen to bounce off of out the gate, while Eggman wouldn't have something like that in the games until Unleashed/Colors.

Oh, and regarding that art of Movie Omelette — 10/10, thanks for sharing Ace!

[up][up] I find it funny Archie Sonic in it's last years had a Sega Mandate that Sonic or the cast could not have any family members. So now Uncle Chuck became an honorary Uncle.

Really bizarre mandate.

I can sorta understand it.

It's like to keep things simple. Sonic is supposed to be a simple character, easy to project on, with no definable origin because his role is supposed to be that cool guy who always saves the day. Giving him actual family means he would be given a clear origin which ruins the intended mystique of the character.

Plus it opens him up to potential convoluted family drama & shit that Sega prolly wants no part in. Like if you tell someone the old Sonic cartoons, they would come into the games with the assumption that Sonic has some kind of family & thus would be confused when he doesn't.

Something along those lines. Plus no more situations where creators sue for allegedly ripping-off characters they created & what not.

Here is that problem with super speed I had earlier. DC Comics demonstrates it with the Flash.

He has to have a high-tech supercomputer display information at "Flash speed."

I guess that'd only be a problem for computers. A book would still be words on a page. His brain/Sonic's brain could interpret that easily. But, still, a lazy/non-reader suddenly gains the ability to read/process at what several times faster than light? Does super-speed just eliminate lethargy/short attention spans all together? I guess so.
