Not really, it's just a matter of giving of a character an actual purpose that justifies their presence in the game.
Sticking a character in for the sake of something like popularity is exactly why they're so fucking boring nowadays, because they serve no other purpose besides reminding the audience "HEY, WE EXIST LOVE US"
And like, I don't see why this has to mean "only Sonic, Tails, Knuckles and Amy" are important.

A lazy millennial who's good at what he does.Yea, that got us such wonderful appearances from classic Sonic..oh wait
A lazy millennial who's good at what he does.Point being made: With enough care putting old characters back into the series can work. Focusing solely on "classic" characters does not beget a good game.
Shade being thrown: Look at how many good Classic Sonic appearances there were.
Response: The f-ck...
Internally: I mean, you're not wrong but you don't need to attack Classic Sonic to make that point. Classic Sonic's "inclusion" only really failed in Forces where development was rushed and the gameplay forgettable. You can't say you want other characters to be given respect but then not respect the characters, or earlier versions of certain characters that helped form this franchise's identity. If we can all just have basic respect for the fact that we all came into this series at different points and like different parts of it then we can all get along famously while Sega of Japan continues to ignore us, and ruin the parts of the franchise that we actually liked.
Continued response: ...are you on?
Expected counter-response: F'ck you say?

I'M MR. MEESEEKS, LOOK AT ME!Ayy, beautifully illustrated.
YO. Rules of the Internet 45. Rule 45 is a lie.Ya'll are losing me right now.
A cruel, sick joke is still a joke, and sometimes all you can do is laugh. That was bound to happen.
YO. Rules of the Internet 45. Rule 45 is a lie.I'd rather have a mess at this point. Or even just the more extended cast show up beyond giving exposition like in forces.
It's really not a whole lot to ask for. A game with a story that lets Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Eggman participate, with appearances by Cream, Blaze, Rouge, or Shadow where or if appropriate. The whole cast doesn't need to be around at once, but having any of the cast show up from time to time would be nice.
As said before, giving spinoffs would do a lot to solve the clutter. We typically only get a core 3d installment every 3-4 years or so, and each primarily focuses on Sonic and Tails against Eggman. No side games, no spinoffs, the closest we've had is Team Sonic Racing, and if anything it has too few characters.
"No will to break."You know I'm throwing shade on how badly they've been using classic Sonic and not Classic himself right?
That and I don't care much for his "legacy"

A lazy millennial who's good at what he does.Besides Forces, what else?
YO. Rules of the Internet 45. Rule 45 is a lie.Speaking of characters/games we'd like to see more of, I'd love a Sonic Shuffle sequel or a rerelease. I already have an idea in mind for how a sequel could work, and how to tie Eggman into the plot.
The Protomen enhanced my life.Shaking a can of soda is clearly Eggman's most evil deed.
"No will to break."I love how mad Eggman gets if nobody shakes the soda can.
... Also I really, really like Void and Lumina.
I do writing, feel free to check out my stories here! https://numbugwritingblog.tumblr.com/post/686233243868102656/numbugs-shared-heroic-uniI only listed Amy because of how much she appears alongside the main three lately.
To pity someone is to tell them "I feel bad about being better than you."@Soble- Given that you were just earlier expressing apathy for Cream, stating that you don't desire her return, and being baffled by the increased fascination for the character, and demand for her return, I find it kind of hard to see your post as nothing but hollow
Just saying, you can't call out others for "disrespecting" Classic Sonic when you were being completely disrespectful with Cream. Respect is a two way street: I'd be perfectly happy to give Classic Sonic all the respect you want me to give, all I ask is the same for Cream
@darkabomination- Couldn't agree more! It shouldn't be too much to ask for the extended cast to show up every once in a while, given the longer development for main games. And the lack of side/spinoff games has only worsened the impatience. As I've said many times before, I would have a much easier time waiting for the characters to be playable in 3D again if we had, say, another Advance/Rush game with any of them playable, in the meantime

Same XD I like Illumina too.
The Protomen enhanced my life.I've always considered Ray a character no one likes and a useless, forgettable character who Tails replaced, but Mania shows he has a lot of fans. Every character has its fans to a degree.
Classic Sonic isn't good because he's Classic Sonic. There's nothing inherently good about him or his character compared to Modern Sonic. Replace his sprites with Modern Sonic and you still have the same good games. That's part of the reason why the resurgence of Classic Sonic seems unnecessary. Using the old designs doesn't change much. I know some people say the original designs are more marketable, but that's a matter of opinion.

I can see Amy as a Magic Knight while Cream serves as either a Black Mage or Red Mage.
How about Blaze as the latter while Cream is the token non-mage?
Fair enough.
I'M MR. MEESEEKS, LOOK AT ME!Seems to stack up. Cream's the really broken healer for Chronicles, for what it's worth.
I like Lumina in Shuffle. As a party game, it didn't need a story mode, but I appreciate the ambition regardless. Is probably the bottom of the barrel though for lip sinking and cutscene timing though.
"No will to break."If they were bring in a new Sonic Shuffle game, they could 1-up (heh heh) on Super Mario Party by having online board multiplayer and not just for only a handful of minigames.
Calling Ray a character no one likes doesn't make sense when it's either...people have no idea who he is or fans know him from Archie Comics.
Or even just Mania now.
YO. Rules of the Internet 45. Rule 45 is a lie.
Only the necessary characters...
They exist to be given roles...
Don't do that.
