It was made and released IIRC in Japan (only) and was directed by Takashi Miike. What it has going for it that this doesn't is 1) it doesn't try to be realistic, and 2) all of the characters are human in the first place.
To pity someone is to tell them "I feel bad about being better than you."
They're fine in the games, yes.
Thing is, this is a movie where they wanted Sonic to look more realistic. And to them, whatever they came up with apparently wouldn't look good with Sonic's usual eye shape.
I'm not sure what to expect, but I'll probably be fine with the final look as long as it meshes well with the rest of movie Sonic's design.
Also, the more I look at Sonic's proportions, the more I'm reminded of how awkward Viewtiful Joe first looked among the cast of Marvel vs Capcom 3...

They could have just used his normal design and maybe used some more realistic fur textures. 2006 already featured Sonic alongside realistic humans and it didn't look too bad. My only complaint is that it looks like they spent all their budget on the humans and none on the funny animals, resulting in dead eyed stares and fur looking like skin.

It just clicked that the tagline is play on the phrase "A whole new breed of hero," but they changed breed to speed because Sonic runs fast.
