Classic Sonic's based aesthetic is more similar to Mickey Mouse than LT.

Then from there on it is LT.

[up] Yes, but they both have a similar enough aesthetic that it's passable to compare the two. Sonic being similar to Looney Tunes wasn't why I referenced it, though. I was comparing the Lions and Tigers and Humans... Oh, My! aesthetic.

[up][up][up] The problem isn't that these things can't co-exist, it's that they don't co-exist. It's either one way or the other. If a game starts off with a level like Green Hill, you can bet money that it won't contain any modern city stages like City Escape later on, or vice-versa.note

There's never been any proper world-building, so you can't just say that some games take place elsewhere than other games. Especially not with games like Unleashed and Forces, which take place across the entire planet, but everything still follows a consistent visual style.

Even the handful of recurring areas have their own problems. Green Hill was always said to be located on South Island, but now Forces says it's part of the mainland. Prison Island exploded in SA2, but then it shows up in Shadow just fine.

Forces features an area called "Metropolis" that doesn't look anything like Metropolis Zone from Sonic 2. I saw someone speculate that it's supposed to be Grand Metropolis from Sonic Heroes, which makes more sense to me, but apparently it is Metropolis Zone from Sonic 2.

Angel Island and the ARK are the only areas that have stayed (relatively) consistent with every appearance, but even then, they don't show up that often.

Prison Island at least had the decency to look like a ruined hellscape after it blew up, so there's that.

To be fair, the design of Prison Island in Shadow does make it seem abandoned, with huge amounts of toxic waste, plain buildings with very little technology, and no human presence apart from robots, which easily could've been placed there after the fact.

Not to mention Black Doom says that it's been abandoned by the humans.

Okay, maybe Prison Island was a bad example...

I'm willing to say that any worldbuilding Forces tried to do should be discarded; as an addendum, I'm willing to posit, as a chunk of worldbuilding, that Eggman is responsible for the flying cars and any high-tech city is at least heavily under the control of his probable various shell companies that he runs to make money for his evil schemes.

It makes more sense than no one being able to find Lost Hex even though it's presumably just floating around just like Angel Island.

To be "fair" to the Lost Hex, nobody said it couldn't be found, just that...

...

It's called the Lost Hex...

You don't name something 'lost' if you know where it is.

Maybe it's named that because it has a lot of missing hexagons...the shape that individually makes it up.

That seems obvious.

Star Light Zone clearly has a city in the background. The series has always mixed up fantasy with modern/futuristic.

Forces is full of random inconsistencies and retcons. It's the odd game out. Maybe they're trying to Soft Reboot the franchise?

One nondescript city in the background of one stage is hardly the same thing as "this is literally just San Francisco".

[up] Exactly. It's nondescript, so you can't be certain it isn't a mundane city.

And as he said, that's not at all the same thing.

I wonder, how would Sonic play off of a character that is Chaotic Evil?

I was going to mention him, but I'm pretty sure Sonic and Mephiles never directly interact with each other, outside of Mephiles killing Sonic when the final story starts.

I haven't played it myself, but what about Erazor from Sonic and the Secret Rings? Wasn't he pure evil too?

He was, but his motivations were more among the likes of world domination and revenge rather than being evil just because.

A better example would be Kefka Palazzo from Final Fantasy VI.

The problem is that Chaotic Evil in Sonic games is generally portrayed as 'mindless engine of destruction' when they even bother to do anything with it at all. And even then, we don't have many examples, and almost all of them are things Eggman deliberately released to muddy the water.

Exactly. Which is why we need more villains like Kefka.

I don't really know why we "need" villains like Kefka in this series. Don't get me wrong, he's a great villain. But there's nothing about a Chaotic Evil villain that inherently makes them well-written or good. Arguably Infinite fit that archetype and he was very underwritten and pretty lame. It's simply one way to write a villain, the execution is what matters.

[up]Of course.

And speaking of Kefka, even if there was a villain like him in Sonic and was executed perfectly, would he be appropriate for the series in general?

I think Dimentio is a better comparison. Final Fantasy and Sonic (usually) have different tones for their series.

[up][up]And why do you think having a villain like Kefka is a terrible idea for a Sonic baddie?
