"Hate" is an incredibly strong word and, even then, it's a just a Vocal Minority.

And I apologize for being highly mind boggled by Colors' immense critical praise and love, as well as people continuing to call it a "good and fun" game. Like, I'm sorry, but it should seriously be the other way around

Oh, no, I hate Sonic Colors. I mean that strongly. The only part of it I like is the opening theme song. I can tolerate Unleashed for at least having awesome day sections and feeling like it was meant to be Sonic Adventure 3.

If you took out the Werehog and replaced Tails with Chip I'd even argue it was pretty good. I must have closed my ears when Colors received immense critical praise why Unleashed got all the sh-t.

a fair number of people certainly got tired of the new super mario bros spin off series for getting stale, but that's a problem that only holds if you played the previous games. you can still pickup the latest one of the bunch and have a decent time if you didn't played the previous -which is an issue a lot of mario spinoffs has been running into. i've notably seen that case being made for mario&luigi and paper mario too.

Honestly, I'm with Known on Unleashed. I might like the Daystages better if they didn't handle like 3D Blast in wide enough space (and it was Colors of all things that helped me to see that). Plus there's the stupid medal system which just kills all my drive to ever revisit the game.

Say what you want about Colors, at least that game didn't feel like Sonic On Ice.

Is it weird I leaned more towards the Night stages more than the Day stages? (I rented the Wii version of Unleashed back when Blockbuster was still a thing.)

[up][up][up] That's the beauty of the system. The spinoff games aren't there for everyone to like. The NSMB games, especially, are there for there to be a standard and comparatively inexpensive, but still quality series that anyone can pick up and play.

The people who wean off of it because they're all very samey still ideally become Mario fans by playing it, and thus move on to the main series which is where Nintendo really stretches its creative wings. A well made spinoff system is thus a buffer that makes the whole franchise stronger.

The hate towards New Super Mario Bros is a Vocal Minority. According to sales, they're the most popular Mario titles. It's the fanbase that is angry, but the fanbase is not the main consumer. Most people don't drool over Mario canon like the dedicated fandom does.

I wish Sega would do a NSMB with Mania. Let the hardcore Classic fans have their Classic fun while the main games pander to Modern fans. That'll fix some stuff. I don't agree with making the two completely separate - I was hoping they'd bring back Fang in a redesign or give Mighty a new role and a redesign - but that's a small price.

The series is already NSMB-fied though. Green Hill/Chemical Plant, forced to only play as one character (It's not like there's a consider gameplay difference between Mario, Luigi, and the Toads)

NSM Bing Mania will become so boring so fast, it can outrun Infinite. The classic Sonic games actually bothered adding stuff and different gameplay elements so that each game feels different. The only NSMB game that even feels unique is the first one and that's because of the bosses, the Mega Mushroom, and the fact that Boswer Jr. was the main villain. And I don't want Mania 2 to have the be Green Hill —> Chemical Plant —> Studiopolis etc etc pattern that plagues NSMB.

NSMB is like an ordinary turkey sandwich with nothing else. I'll eat it. It won't ruin my day and I'll won't be hungry for awhile. But it won't be anything I'd savior.

If anything, it should strive to be like Tropical Freeze. Take everything from the previous game and improve it. And honestly, I think Mania Plus did a better job at than Mania. Mania Plus feels more like an actual Sonic 4.

And I think this vid explains it better

“Every game has literally the same levels” is not what was meant by “make a series that’s like NSMB.”

Mania can absolutely accomplish for Sonic Team what NSMB does for Nintendo while having new content.

TSR has a good soundtrack for a game that'll play second fiddle to Mario Kart. Good soundtracks help average-to-good games though.

I never heard of hyper potions until mania and I wasn't a fan, as I thought that opening theme was kinda meh.

This remix is cool enough though.

[up][up] All Stars Racing Transformed was the same way.

As a person who loves both series, imo the Sonic series playing second fiddle to Mario Kart is really unfortunate. Gameplay wise, its like comparing Mario Kart to F-Zero.

[up] All kart racers seem destined to play second fiddle to Mario Kart. It just has a monopoly of the genre to the degree where everything else just comes off as "Well, it's a bargain and I'm bored of playing Mario Kart right now, so I'll pick this up and beat it".

To be honest, I played a bit of a Mario kart 8 demo in a Target and wasn't that into it. I just found ASRT to be more streamlined, if that makes any sense.

Mario Kart and Pokémon have a tight monopolic chokehold on their markets to the point that anything in the same genre no matter how different in execution will be called a ripoff.

I dunno, they're not safe from each other it seems. Pokemon's attempt at racing and platforming did not churn out major success.

True. And soon Mario's attempt at a monster collection game will be beaten out of the park by Pokémon. :v

Honestly I feel transformed is better than any of the mario kart games(at least the ones I played) but meh.

It did have the dumbest guest character in game history though. Danica Patrick? Lol I feel whoever set that up needed to be fired.
