[up][up] Decent. At least it's actually a mask.

The not human thing is a big strike on Meta Knight how do we know it not just part of his face?

Because his body and arms are blue, his mask is metal and you can clearly tell it's a mask because of the hidden eyes behind it? And I dont see what "not being human" has to do with anything.

Not really liking the blue spirit image.

Meta Knight works for me in part because he's not human - without the mask he's only a round blobby thing. The mask and cape are what make him look "cool".

I'm not fond of Zechs. The mask seems only incidental to his outfit and looks more like a flight helmet. And in the combined shot with the Tallgeese I focus more on the mech.

V works though - he's a pretty mask centric character. smile However my favourite is still the original Meta Knight picture.

[up]Too much face, not enough mask.

He's also lacking the badass vibe. He's just sitting there.

Anyway really not happy with Meta Knight it is not clear that its not just part of his face.

He just looks silly and grumpy. Also just standing there and it looks a bit too much like he just got some strange ink done.

I'd still say the second-last V is the best so far.

[up]The V image is okay I guess, but it's certainly not an improvement over the current Meta Knight image. The mask is only 5% of the image and because it's dark and he's wearing both a trenchoat and a giant hat, it almost looks like face paint.

Now that I reread the trope probably a helmet wouldn't matter that much, since it's about the obscuring of (most of) the face, which just happens to be commonly executed with a mask.

Not really liking the Blue Spirit, since he looks like a mook to me.

[up] Right, if we're going to use V please use the live action version, where the mask is clearly a mask. One of the ones suggested was pretty good. It's a mask, it's cool, it's more recognisable, and he looks pretty damn dangerous.

Because I do love older examples of decades back

The Phantom Of the Opera's Mask

Zorro: He inspired Batman you know...

Belphegor, The Phantom of the Louvre

Egyptian Burial Masks: Older Than Dirt and you will die to wear one. Also, it means you were important in life...

Venician Carnival Masks

I like the Pharaoh's. Zorro's a bit less unrepresentative of masks in general, although he does look impeccably dangerous.

I don't think Venetian masks count as an example though.

For me Zorro gets the browny points as he's a Trope Codifier for the masked hero in general. There's a reason for that.

On the other hand that drawn Zorro image does make a kickin' page image.

I still like Metaknight better cuz his coolness is a lot more centered on his cool outfit and masky capeyness. I'd say Zorro's coolness is mostly cuz of his Swashbuckler Badassery. He'd be cool without the mask.

I disagree. Zorro without the mask would just be some shmo with a cape and sword. A swashbuckler yes, but a generic one. The mask gives him the mystery and appeal. Nothing of the rest of the outfit stands out as much as the mask, as the rest could be worn at the time without raising an eyebrow. The mask is the sole thing telling you "This guy's different and important."

And Zorro (well, the film attire) pretty much codified the "Hero who wears a mask as a permanent part of his outfit". He might not have been the first, but many who would follow would do it because he did (Batman for one, and by proxy all those Batman inspired).

[up] This one

[up][up][up] Cool Mask isn't about coolness. It's about the relation between obscuring one's face with kickassery.

As much as I like Meta Knight, Zorro is both cooler and a better example.
