In any machine, there are three things that make it tick: the moving parts, the power source, and the person operating it.
These are your moving parts. -Opens the bag, revealing six small, yellow balls that appear to be made of some sort of gemstone. He tosses one to her, then takes a knife out of his coat and tosses that to her as well-
We should take this outside. -Picks up the bag and heads out-

MY SOUL IS DARK BUT MY HAIR IS COLORFUL — Brahian Pokémon AlchemistRight... first off... how do I put this...
-Takes out a knife of his own- Let's say I were to throw this thing as hard as I could, at a target...oh, two miles away. This is an exaggeration, but just go with me. And let's also say that I can somehow see my target and aim at it from that distance, so that's not a problem.
The problem is, no matter how hard I chuck it, things like wind resistance, mass, and gravity will still conspire to slow it down. I'm not going to make it.
That's where these things come it. -Holds up a materia-
-Jogs away to the point where he's out of human eyeshot, then throws the knife. It lands dead-center in a knothole in a tree next to Jo-
Magic allows us to get around those things somewhat.
MY SOUL IS DARK BUT MY HAIR IS COLORFUL — Brahian Pokémon Alchemist-And then, impossibly, a freshly-pulled black feather embeds itself next to the knife-
-Jogs back and holds out his hand for the knife- It's hard to explain. There's sort of... I dunno, an energy current you can extend into it to activate it, and then it crams a bunch of info into your head for as long s you're using it. Think of it as an extension of your frontal lobe. It takes a bit of doing to get used to that process alone. Once you do, though, you just sort of pick a spot, and then will it there. It'll usually make it. If you can see your target, you can throw whatever you need to hit it, regardless of whether or not its meant to be thrown, or if you're strong enough to get it even one metre or ten away from you.

MY SOUL IS DARK BUT MY HAIR IS COLORFUL — Brahian Pokémon AlchemistThat's not recommended. Vincent blew up a rifle doing that. There's a materia for what you're thinking about, but it's not this one. We'll get to that after we figure out this one, mostly because it's safer.
So. The first part, I can't help you much with. It helps if you relax, though. You should be able to sense it. Don't worry about using it right now, just try to get a feel for it.
MY SOUL IS DARK BUT MY HAIR IS COLORFUL — Brahian Pokémon Alchemist-Nods- Don't force it, though.

MY SOUL IS DARK BUT MY HAIR IS COLORFUL — Brahian Pokémon AlchemistYeah, yeah fine. They'll probably give me the pardon anyway, I've stuck to one of the main conditions, haven't taken on a job in a week. And I'm going back to help the Special forces take down the Black Dragon. So that'll be... interesting.
But that's not on my mind.
"You'd never do something as irrational as dying."

-Heads over to Mime and offers him a hand-
So... there's Blue, which involves learning from your environment — but that tends to be high-risk, and you seem like the kind of lady that likes having limbs. There's White, which involves medical care and curse-breaking, which is always useful. There's Black, which involves raw offensive power, and in some cases, psychological warfare. There's your innate magic, which I'm not sure if people in your world even have... and there's the physical kind, that involve giving the finger to physics. Can be pretty tricky, but it's usually safe, too.
Where do you want to start?
