Basically the Buster Sword is ultimate symbol of honor and you are never EVER supposed to use it to cut someone. Unless your defending your honor.

Not to mention where it's travelled. Disregarding the prequels for a moment (sorry, Jam, but I don't like retcons), it belonged to one of Cloud's heroes, Zack; it was used to gut the other, Sephiroth, like a pig after he became a murderous maniac and killed a shitload of people; it was taken up by Cloud; used to kill Sephiroth again; used as a grave marker for Zack; and is now being used by a murderous maniac who killed a shitload of people. The circle is now complete.
