Crayon97 Yoylecake! It's a tiny bit of something living, too small to see. So that manifested itself as the disease. It mostly hit people who had close contact with the Lifestream, but there were a couple of exceptions....

MY SOUL IS DARK BUT MY HAIR IS COLORFUL — Brahian Pokémon AlchemistMy signal's gonna suck for a bit.
Um... it's sort of the blood of the Planet, consisting of everything that ever died. When you die where I'm from, your will is reclaimed by the Planet, and you're dissolved and used to make a new life. Not really reincarnation, more like recycling. Once again, there have been a few exceptions.
MY SOUL IS DARK BUT MY HAIR IS COLORFUL — Brahian Pokémon Alchemist@Cloud - Is that so? Hmm...come to think of it, I never gave much thought on what happens to the soul of the dead. I mean, yeah, I have the abstract idea but nothing concrete.
By the way, is there any soap?

Continuously reading, studying, and (hopefully) growing.By the sink. Sorry about that.
So, since all living things are connected to the Lifestream, the contamination spread to them. And when they died, they were contaminated, so they spread the contamination further. The entire time, the disease was driven by the cells, which held the man's mind.
