There's a prevailing theory amongst archaeologists that suggested several mythological creatures may have been real. Once upon a time. And one such myth was Atlantis- a whole civilization that just disappears with almost no evidence apart from references by contemporaries.
However- it has been theorized that it's possible they could have simply left this world. If we are to believe that magic also exists- as it clearly does, given the fairy on my shoulder bound to the sword that allows me to be a vigilante...
That events happening in our main earth caused them to seek refuge somewhere else. For Atlantis- every other nation hating them, and military defeat. Causing them to "sink" into the unknown in a way.
For the mythological creatures such as the elves and dwarves of norse mythology... as well as Anubites of Egypt, Centaurs- and other such pagan things- may have been driven out by religious conflict. Symptoms of a pagan faith would be sort of- hunted- in order to prevent their existence from being provable before a court.
It's a theory that says it happened in two waves- with Atlantis first, and then the "Mythic Creatures" following afterwards.
Some say that because in Asian cultures you see a similar decline it can't be linked to Christianity alone, of course... so it may have been a change in human culture that wanted to hunt them rather than coexist. Leading to said exodus to what people who put forward this theory call "Mythic Earth." a parallel dimension, accessed by magic.
When I went to sleep- there were still fairies around. But we did feel threatened by humans. When I woke up- I found out I was the only one of my kind still around. I'm the last Fairy on Earth.

{Get away from me!}
He used to be such a bright kid.
When Link was drafted into the Hylian Army, he had no idea what to expect. Perhaps they might assign him to do odd jobs, he thought, nothing too strenuous. He'd received word he'd passed his physical exams a few days after that thought. Though he didn't want to be a soldier, such was his fate.
In training, he was taught that the Army's presence against all enemies was to be uniform in all aspects possible, both in and out of battle. That meant not speaking unless spoken to, never saying much, and quashing all aspects of personality. These rules were strictly enforced, and Link never really bought into it. If it weren't the chance for a better future — mainly in the form of a salary of rupees, once his conscription was over — he would have let himself be dishonorably discharged.
But Link was proficient at swordplay — very proficient — and quick to pick up new techniques. So much so that one of the Elders of the Hylian Army decided to nominate him to be the bodyguard of Princess Zelda. Link went through with it. The nominating process involved multiple tests, the final one of which being a duel against a General of the Hylian Army.
Link didn't remember much of the day he fought the General. He didn't remember his face, what else he did that day, or why he was even there. He just remembered pain, pain beyond pain — the princess crying out, "Stop it! He is dying, stop!" — yet Link took it. He stood firm. He didn't fear the general. He fought until he passed out.
After he recovered, the princess successfully convinced her father to let Link be her bodyguard. The argument that he was strong in will had convinced him.
Strong in will, he was. To a fault.

dead devotion-nods- This "mythic earth" may still have the highly militaristic Atlantis existing upon it.
Which- considering they may have been largely alone in their own dimension, may have grown powerful... or stagnant.
I think stagnant.
I just remember my family always telling me that we should watch for Atlantis. That's all. They were powerful, militaristic- and knew Magic far better than any other contemporary...
I think they improved whilst alone- and they couldn't have been dethroned by refugees in the second wave.
As I heard it- that just isn't what the Atlanteans were like. They don't roll over and accept defeat.

Atlantis had better opportunities during the 20th century than they do today.
I'm sure it won't happen. At least not while I'm alive. They could have come back so many times yet they didn't.

Perhaps.
