If you think of time as a web of probabilities and divergences- and then you were able to see those individual strands as they lie out in front of you-
Imagine if you could- cut away parts of the web? It'd prevent that divergence from ever happening, for it would cease to exist.
I've witnessed Mr Whitechapel do such a thing.
The man has the genetics of an Oracle, and has learned enough magic to tap into it through ritual.
I happened to be a witness- and I don't think he knows that I did.

Which is why- if you confronted him and let him get away- he'd look for the strands where you win.
And then remove them.
We're lucky that he hasn't moved from his spot to meet people.
If he did, he'd probably take a break every night- just to make sure that none of the people he freshly met would be able to catch him.

As curious as a place could be. Like you said, it's surrounded by wilderness. No one's really sure where it ends, either.
