I'm not sure about that, but it's... not quite two years yet. I met them a week or two after I got here, so... it's something like that.

You'd be picking them out. It'd just be that I'd be paying for it.

(nods in acknowledgment)

This place is freakin' weird...

(finishes one stick only to start biting on another)

You happen to know any way we can go back to where we came from? Y'know, whenever we want to instead of whenever this dimension just happens to feel like spitting us out?

...I know how to go back to my home, but I don't think that helps very much.

Oh no, no, I don't. I just know what she likes, that's all.

No, it doesn't. It's fine...just curious.

So what's your story?

Mhm. Boots are a safe bet; she wears those all the time.

It's a bit long, and... weird.

They're good. I bet if I had to kick someone really hard, they'd get broken bones. Plus you can drop hammers on them and they feel fine.

What if there’s no better word than just not saying anything?

Well, protecting your feet's true and all, but I dunno about the kicking part. It'd hurt, but it might not break anything.

Stomping's not really kicking, though, is it?

...Well, alright. I'm fine telling you, it's just that... it's a little odd to just say all of it so fast. But- you asked.

-Takes a deep breath, then just kind of sheds the hesitant demeanor-

It doesn't start with me. It starts with someone else. Her name is Tallis. She's around here, too, hard to miss. She's more than a head taller than me, muscular, gray hair, yellow eyes, smiles a lot, cheerful. That kind of thing.

She was the only child of a rich couple in a city called Kejlras. They loved their daughter a lot. More than they should have. They were scared of the world outside of their penthouse, so they kept her inside, and they raised here there. When she was about five or six, their business life got more complicated. They couldn't stay at home and be around her. They didn't like it, but they had to go if they wanted to keep their status and wealth. So they left for a years-long business trip.

Tallis wasn't very... happy about that. She was sheltered and young, and she didn't know what to do. Her parents knew that, though. They hired a maid for her. Just some- a random young woman they plucked from the streets, more or less, and had her take care of Tallis in their place. The maid's name was Juillegar. She was a good caretaker, and she was good with kids, so she and Tallis got along. They got to be friends pretty quickly.

Tallis's parents told Juillegar not to let her leave the house, even though Juillegar was- more than capable of keeping her safe. She knew how to fight. But the parents were too nervous, so they stayed there. Tallis got more and more fearful as the years dragged on, and she grew closer and closer to Juillegar, which made her a little uncomfortable, but she didn't leave. Juillegar was Tallis's only friend in the world, so she didn't think she could just ditch her, not that she wanted to.

When Tallis was eighteen or nineteen, something... happened. Their world, Yrala, was invaded by these creatures called the Fey. They were supposed to have been there in the ancient past, and they had come back. Kejlras, the city they lived in, was the strongest in the world, but it wasn't a match for the Fey. It fell within a month, and millions of people died. But not Tallis and Juillegar.

As soon as the fighting started, Juillegar took Tallis and went to the safest place she knew of: the underground parts of the city. The power plants, the warehouses, the sewers, anywhere they could find. While the world above them burned, the two of them survived in the darkness, mostly undisturbed. Eventually, they had to venture to the surface to look for supplies, and they saw something in the sky. It wasn't the Fey like it had been earlier.

It was a vast, mighty fleet of warships from somewhere out in space. Yrala had sent a distress call when the fighting started, and their aid only arrived after it had fallen. These people, led by a man who was- he was the God of War, they destroyed the Fey. The Fey were strong, but they were no match for the War God's soldiers, and they purged the Fey from Yrala out of a sense of retribution.

It was all they could do. There was nothing to save anymore. Most of Yrala was already dead. After the Fey had been driven off, the War God, Me'hron was his name, found the two of them hiding under rubble. He rushed over to them and got them out, happy that someone had been saved, but deeply sad that it was only them. At least... by that point. Me'hron felt guilty for arriving so late, so he decided to repay them the best he could. He looked between Tallis and Juillegar, and he chose Tallis.

He elevated her to godhood. As a sign of remembrance, he made her the God of Technology, after the greatest virtue of her people. But it wasn't entirely altruistic. He could tell that she was impressionable and easily manipulated. She was someone he could make strong and then count on to do his dirty work for him. Juillegar wasn't as weak-willed as she was, so she was an obstacle. He told Tallis that gods didn't consort with regular people, so Tallis was forced to make her leave. She sent Juillegar away, hating herself for it but having no other choice.

Me'hron and Tallis left with each other. Juillegar stayed behind on Yrala, but she left, too, eventually. Within a few years, Tallis was deeply dissatisfied and felt hollow and lonely. She'd lost the only friend she ever had, and it was her fault. It ate her up, and at one point, she just couldn't do it anymore. She couldn't go on all on her own, even though she was stronger than she could have ever imagined. She used her power to just- make a copy of her friend. Right then and there. Not a machine. A living-and-breathing, flesh-and-blood Juillegar. A Juillegar who didn't... know that the original had been cast away. Tallis left that part out of her memory.

And then... they resumed as they always had. Tallis was reckless, and the copy died defending Tallis. Tallis was horrified, but she knew there was a way out. She just made another copy. But by then Tallis's mind had started to deteriorate, and the copy wasn't quite right. It was based off of her own memory, and that was starting to go bad. So the second copy was a little off, and then the third one was, too, and it just kept going.

Juillegar had black hair, at first. She was tall, broad-shouldered, a little imposing. But after the copies got to the... thirties, that had changed. She had blue hair, she was short, she was meek.

...

Tallis went crazy. She fought people for sport, and sometimes the copies decided that was wrong, so they tried to stop Tallis. They couldn't stand against her, though, and Tallis killed them, then made another. One day, she made the fiftieth copy. Me.

I was just like all the others. I didn't know anything about what was going on, or what had happened. I ended up here, and I felt- distraught and scared. I was supposed to keep her safe, but I couldn't if she wasn't here. I fretted and worried, but I made do. Tallis found her way here after a while. She missed me. We met up and we got back to business as usual, but she was unstable. She was here for a few weeks, then out of nowhere, she... tried to kill me. The people here banded around me, and we drove her off.

Then she came back with a fifty-first copy. She attacked me again, but she failed. Me'hron showed up by then, and he told us how to kill her. It wasn't exactly selfless. His puppet had gone bad, and now he... wanted to clean the mess up. But we didn't know that, so we did as he told us, and we- no, I, killed her. And since there was no one else to take her power, I took it on for myself for safekeeping.

I must have cried for... weeks. My entire reason for being was gone, and I'd killed it. I was a mess, and I felt like I'd just ripped a chunk out of myself. Or- something like that. I had this idea in the back of my head that she'd made me that way, that I was supposed to want to be around her. With the help of some other people, I made a choice to bring her back, but I was going to fix her. Everything about her that was wrong, that was bad, that was crazy, I took out. And I brought her back, without her powers.

It... went poorly at first. People were unbelievably suspicious of her and a couple almost tried to kill her, but they didn't do it in the end. By that point, ignorant as she was, she was terrified. She didn't even know why all of this was happening, so I told her all of it. And she was... I think you can imagine how she took it.

Things were rocky for a while as the two of us sorted things out. With ourselves, each other, and everyone else. But eventually- we, we made it work. She clawed herself to a respectable position, I worked to get over her, and things got rolling. Things got to be... normal, actually. After a long, long time of nothing but insanity for the two of us.

She has some of her power back now. She earned it. She never tried to hurt anyone, so it was... only fair.

And that's... well. That's my story. Or... I guess it's two people's stories.

(that box of Rocky is now empty, having been slowly finished by Kyoko throughout the story)

(as she ate, she was enraptured, and noticeably saddened)

(the way she bit into the biscuits seemed forceful too)

...that's...that's some story.

Sorry, it couldn't have been easy for you to tell all that.
