Lazy?
Storm clouds?
- Complex instrumentation
- Diverse array of sounds and textures
- Chunky riffs
- Fucking around with time signatures
- Solos and lots of them
- Concept albums
- Science-fiction themes
- Antireligious lyricism
- Lengthy songs
- Atmospheric ambient sections
Yes, I like progressive rock/metal, why do you ask?
With cannon shot and gun blast smash the alien. With laser beam and searing plasma scatter the alien to the stars.Just realised that, the many non-guitar related things that I am obsessed with aside, I have a subconscious fixation on fast, clipped, rhythmic guitar melodies just off of major in key. Not sure what that means.
I'll hide your name inside a word and paint your eyes with false perception. If there's one thing that's my biggest draw, it's a hypnotic effect.
- Hypnotic dissonance
- Intensity building, usually by repeating phrases and stacking it, better with some occasional drum variations when necessary
- Deep, danceable grooves, nearly the same as my previous point though not always the case
- Intense ambience (this tied in with hypnotic repetitive intensity = why I like drone music, I guess)
- Jazz... I can't get much more specific. Anything with a jazzy soul generally puts me in the zone
Oh, also...
- Spacey, pretty vocals
- Very smooth track transitions in albums
- Analog warmth, vinyl scratchiness, and exotic instruments when used to improve ambience

Hmm, I should redo my list....
- Deep bass
- Tuplets &/or interesting syncopation (*I'd just say interesting syncopation, but Hardstyle...*)
- Unique instrumentation
- Harsh atmospherics
- Weird genre crossovers
- A strong ability to inspire emotion
Oooh, these are good too.
- Analog warmth, vinyl scratchiness, and exotic instruments when used to improve ambiance
Everything is better with analog.

The 5 geek social fallacies. Know them well.![]()
I think that we are going to get along quite nicely, Nil.
Long arching lead harmonies, polyphony appreciated.
Thick and not too reverb heavy rhythm guitar sound.
No verse chorus structures - linear and narrative instead.
Jarring and unpleasant dissonance/atonality in contrast to normative melody.
Clear but torn, dry sounding harsh vocals
.
Un-catchy songwriting putting an emphasis more on overall development than hooks.
Higher range melodramatic falsetto vocals.
Non-clean and occasionally incredibly filthy, putrid production that's still fairly easy to hear.
Floaty, pseudo-jazz/fusion drumming.
Mythic/metaphorical lyricism.
Altering levels of intensity and harmonic density.

Only Death Is RealLet's see:
- Hammond organ solos.
- Horn sections.
- Truck Driver's Gear Change.
- Lots of harmony.
- Strong bassline and/or drums
- Lots of steel guitar
I get those first five in country a lot more than you'd think.
If no one's noticed yet, I'm into almost anything ominous, gloomy, or creepy. In every medium, but especially music.
It's kind of complicated, though, because that kind of music can easily descend into narm or macho posturing.
I also tend to fall hard for musicians that go for a balance between technical talent and musicality, like Frank Zappa, Primus, and Protest The Hero in rock, and Aphex Twin and Squarepusher in electronic.
I'll also listen to almost anything with a bass solo.
Or really awesome drum work. I'm a sucker for the double-kick, even though it's cliched, and I think it's kind of sad that I don't seem to hear it in metal as much as I used to, or in any other genre.
Besides that, I have a hard time defining what attracts me to certain songs, besides that I think they're good.

Novel progress: The Adroan, 110k; Yume no Hime, 98k; The Pigeon Witch, on pause at 40k.Let's see what I can come up with:
Gospel-style large choruses.
Complex drum beats, not necessarily progressive time signatures or anything, but a little something to vary from your basic 4/4 rock beat.
Echoing 80's guitar.
Lyrical Dissonance, especially when the music is upbeat and the lyrics grim.
Literary or mythological references in the lyrics.
Mixing different genres together.
I'll probably come up with twice as many examples just as I post this.
I like nostalgic songs a lot. There are a ton of songs reminiscing about some lost teenage lover, and I'm a sucker for those. But other nostalgia is great too, like Kenny Rogers' "Twenty Years Ago".
@Wheezy: Fondness for double-kick aside—how very death metal of you; the boyfriend would approve—you and I seem to be drawn to pretty similar things aesthetically speaking.
I'll hide your name inside a word and paint your eyes with false perception.- Swag Rap with interesting/avant-garde production - particularly A$AP Rocky and some Lil B, but I love just about anything produced by Clams Casino
- sampled drum breaks in rap music
- Shoegazing, and any type of rock music with immensely distorted sounds
- Armenian rock music
Since my main genre is rap, however, I'll take people with better songwriting and production over less-technically skilled lyricists.

- 70s sounding analogue synths
- High range/power vocals
- Political lyrics
