[up] How exactly would that be demonstrated in a still image?

Also, what would that say about the real-life section?

In any case, the role played by Ecco could about as easily have been played by a fish, or a shark, or some other sea animal even vaguely similar to a dolphin in its way of moving through the water. It's most certainly an example, and until someone comes up with a way to demonstrate arbitrarity of inclusion in a still image, it's probably among the better of suggested examples.

I still like the Mario one, since while gratuity isn't easily shown, having him jumping around with them is close.

I'm on the internet. My arguments are invalid.

I also like the Mario one best so far, I think.

I'd be alright with the Mario pic.

Bump...right now the consensus is with the Mario pic, but I'd like a couple more yeas before putting it up.

The cruder Mario pic is ok.

I gotta say I find this thread rather puzzling: the trope text boils down to something like "Dolphins. In sci-fi, very smart dolphins." Currently we've got a picture of a dolphin. Where does this "gratuitous" requirement come from?

Interesting point...I suspect we've got a trope title/description conflict.

Dump it into TRS for a rename?

Man, this is a bad trope page. I added it to the TRS. In the meantime, trying to fix this is probably pointless.

Agreed. Beyond trying to find a pic of a dolphin in a sci-fi setting, I'd be fine with closing this up until TRS does something with it.

Motion to pull

The current pic doesn't address the trope at all, except for a backhanded joke reference.

And where's that from?

He's a Porpoise, and its very common for names of mecha to end in "-der"
