What I have in mind is one of the dolphin stages from Super Mario World.

I'm on the internet. My arguments are invalid.

Well this is a trope, not a meme. So I just want the picture to reflect the trope, which isn't "any sort of dolphins", but "we through dolphins in here just for the hell of it".

Ecco actually is about dolphins, so I don't know if it would count.

And that Mario picture is great.

Dolphins from the future who save the world from aliens doesn't count? but yeah Mario is good, I was just presenting various options.

Why wouldn't Ecco count? This trope is about dolphins, right?

[up]No, it's about dolphins thrown in for the hell of it. But on that note, Ecco could have had any kind of hero, but chose a dolphin, so it could count an example.

There was a Simpsons Treehouse of Horror all about this trope. Here are just a few examples:

I like Raso's Super Mario image, as it's both Gratuitous and without reason. [up] The first one is the best since it's a crowd shot, but unfortunately because of the low bit resolution it might be a little hard to make out

[up][up]That would fit some trope about monster mutated animals better.

I always like to reference lesser known works, since they might also be fun for a wider audience to discover. I am thinking of using a picture from Mahou Tsukai Ni Taisetsu Na Koto, where Yume uses a dolphin as her "call sign", for no other reason than that it looks cool to have a dolphin swimming around when she uses her magical powers.

Hmm...I wonder if I could find a shot of Ar_Ru's song magic from Ar Tonelico 3. Its a pregnant mermaid-dolphin that summons other dolphins to attack the enemy.

Here's a few more Ecco The Dolphin pictures. The ending of the first, the false ending of the sequel, and the intros of each game, are especially ripe for potential page images.

^I see dolphins. The trope is gratuitous dolphins.

And the game might count, but the example would have to explain that the hero was a dolphin because of this trope. So far the Mario one shows that dolphins are just thrown in.

[up][up][up] "Gratuitous" in what sense?

In the "there was no reason for this work to include dolphins, but it did anyway" way.
