I daresay that more glamorous mercenaries would take over for the Pinkertons if strikebreaking by force came back into vogue. They're rather dated. Something more along the lines of Blackwater is what I imagine them using today. Skip the subtlety; reach for the attack helicopters.
"Can ye fathom the ocean, dark and deep, where the mighty waves and the grandeur sweep?"... What are you talking about? Both of you stay on-topic.
As for the "a democracy that works," on the one hand, this is one of those Empirically verifiable positions must be empirically tested scenarios. On the other hand, the consequences off DOWN WITH THE UNIONS are pretty vast and not very localized.
What are the kinds of empirical effects we can expect to see? Well, wage stagnation for one. But we already have wage stagnation, so it'll be hard to prove that we're having more wage stagnation than we otherwise would have had. Thus, with neither side being able to decisively prove anything (on this particular issue), neither side will be forced to change their opinion, even if things go rather poorly.
Wage stagnation is a demonstrable cause of union destruction because they've already destroyed most of the unions, and hence, at least in part because of that (and in part because of deregulation), wages have stagnated or fallen in real terms.
Have you never heard of the Pinkerton private detective agency? They're rather famous, if antique and no longer culturally relevant.
"Can ye fathom the ocean, dark and deep, where the mighty waves and the grandeur sweep?"To be honest, I don't think this really is a viable discussion anymore, now that the recall is done and over with. We'd probably be better off with a thread on unions instead, for topics relating to what brought about the recall to begin with.
"Can ye fathom the ocean, dark and deep, where the mighty waves and the grandeur sweep?"I'd prefer it stay open, since there's still an ongoing investigation into the governor.
Very big Daydream Believer. "That's not knowledge, that's a crapshoot!" -Al Murray "Welcome to QI" -Stephen FryI'm aware, though we're probably all about to be thumped into non-existence for being off-topic, especially since there's concerns of whether the thread is really still valid.
We do need a Wisconsin Gov thread (well "need" might be a strong term), but it's no longer about the recall, and now more about his policies, and whether or not there are really any corruption charges and the like.
I do too care. I mean, I could ask right now if you remembered to dust your evil 1880s capitalist monocle and tophat. Sharp dress is necessary for oppressing the masses, remember. And those Pinkertons aren't going to take contracts from any wanna-be captain of industry off the street. You have to look the part!
...I think we should probably start a new "Wisconsin Governor does stuff" thread from scratch and close this one, myself.
"Can ye fathom the ocean, dark and deep, where the mighty waves and the grandeur sweep?"So thread for Walker and a second thread for general union busting discussion?
Share it so that people can get into this conversation, 'cause we're not the only ones who think like this.

While I have no idea what the baseball reference is or how it relates to the Pinkertons, you do realize they still exist (albeit as a modern PMC; how fitting), right?
