It's good news actually. He got bored and wrote four new novels in the last couple of years without telling anyone and has started a kickstarter
to publish them
Yeah, putting them on Kickstarter is... odd. There's a bunch of extra swag and stuff, so I guess this isn't that different from some of the Kickstarters he's done in the past, just done before everyone reads the books and wants extra stuff for them.
I guess in the end it's another marketing gimmick. But the titles and such will be revealed week by week through March.
Writing a post-post apocalypse LitRPG on RR. Also fanfic stuff.Oh that's a bit of a relief, I honestly thought it was either going to be about illness, burnout or a big shift in book plans due to overcommitting.
I would like to back it for the hardcovers, or even the monthly swag boxes. But shipping makes it utterly impractical for me not living in the US.
413 AUD for the hardcover bundle or 1239 AUD for the swag boxes as well.
I like the Cosmere, but I can't justify that. I bought the Stormlight hardcovers because I love the series. But they only cost me about 40 AUD each including shipping.
Evidentially a lot of people can though, because as I was converting the prices, the Kickstarter ticked over 20 Million AUD!

Don't forget it's for four projects we know nothing about, other than context implying they're unrelated to his existing universes. People are going into this blind.
3 of them are Cosmere, 1 of them isn't. He said that up front. One of the Cosmere ones is about a character we have seen before but never got their own story before.
And yeah, shipping prices outside the US are horrendous. I'd have paid the asking price for the physical hardcovers, but not twice that for shipping. Ebooks for me.

A society grows great when old men plant trees whose shade they know they will never sit in.Well, I read the preview chapters. Tress of the Emerald Sea is a book about a self-professed very boring girl and her very boring boyfriend, and no one cares about either of them. Which is why when her very boring boyfriend is sent off on a suicide mission, she's the one who has to rescue him.
Also, it appears to be narrated by Hoid.

Please spoiler that. I have read the preview chapters as well, but Brandon liked the idea of some people going in 100% blind so i think we should respect that and avoid even the book title.
That said im really looking forward to this story, especially with how this was inspired by the Princess Bride. Also did anyone else notice that the writing on one of Tress cups is Iriali? As in from the country of Iri of Roshar?
Secret project 2.
The Frugal Wizard's Handbook For Surviving Medieval England. Historical fantasy isekai.
So Virtuosity is our fifteenth Shard, but she apparently commited suicide. And possibly screwed up a planet in the process, much like Ambition's death screwed up Thenody. You can see the influence of "artistic skill" in the magic there. On both planets, in fact, because this story has two of them. And if they're using the same language and the same vaguely Japanese-ish names, but very different cultures, they probably grew from the same seed, but were seperated in the fallout of Virtuosity's death.
And that ending, combined with the author's notes for what comes next... The inhabitants of two different fantasy worlds getting mutually Isekai'd? That's a new one.
A society grows great when old men plant trees whose shade they know they will never sit in.Two isekais. Seems he's in a mood. Considering how many cookie-cutter isekai are on the market right now, it's interesting to see another perspective.
Writing a post-post apocalypse LitRPG on RR. Also fanfic stuff. At its most basic, isekai is Trapped in Another World. These days the vast majority are specifically Reincarnate in Another World, but it's not actually necessary. The important part is being stuck in another world; typically, the only functional difference is if there's any chance of getting back home.
Did you read the notes and inspirations after the sample? It's a few spoilers for the future, but Painter is now in Yumi's world, where everyone sees him as her while she stands nearby invisible and intangible to everyone but him. When they go to sleep, they'll swap in Painter's world. So it's definitely a non-standard isekai, but there have been weirder variants before.

To be honest i hate the idea of secondary authors in the Cosmere, that is something which should be reserved for the most extreme of circumstances in my opinion (like the death of the original author). It worked fine in the Skyward novellas, but Lux was full of inconsistencies with previous books of the Reckoner-verse. If that is the case i hope the secondary authors will either just help with the non-Cosmere books, where perfection isnt as important, or only novellas. My worst case scenario would be them helping on a main Cosmere novel, like Stormlight 5 or Nightblood.
