Exactly What It Says on the Tin.

We're going to design and build a world from the ground up.

Anyone who wants can pop in and make a costructive comment any time they want.

I'll be updating this post with the information we come up with.

At the moment:

Setting of the World- A Sci-Fi setting, done via application of magic.

Magic is caused by humans absorbing low radiation from a pervasive, unknown element.

It is used to power machinery.

The Worlds themselves-

There are six planets. They are roughly equal distances from eachother. Their sizes, in order from closest to the sun to farthest from the sun, are A B C C B A, with A being the smallest planets and C the largest-

Like so:

Undervoles

Are also known as Gecks.

They are long and serpentine reptiles that live undergroung.

They have seven limbs- six legs and an arm protruding from their back behind their head.

Their limbs can rotate ninety feet in any direction, perfect for a race with gecko-like feet.

They exude coloured pheromones.

They have two long feelers on their face. They can rub these together to make a high-pitched sound only other Gecks can hear.

They are omnivourous- they eat plants, which grow on the planet near thermal vents, but will not hesitate to devour a dead corpse if they find one.

I'll say a mix of both. Like there are spaceships, but they're fueled by...magic or something.

How about we create a The Force concept for this world? Like a Phlebotinum or something?

It's not exactly naive. And it can happen. But it's tough. And definetly worthwhile.

a power that is drawn on for supernatural purposes.

How do we classify this power and where would it come from?

sufficiently Studied Magic is indistinguishable from Science?

Like, taken to the extreme?

Magical powered spaceships?

Or how about a Gothic Science Fiction Western Fantasy?

The studied Magic part sounds interesting.

Like...Magic as science? With laws, equations and stuff? Ok, not that heady, but I really dig the concept.

It's not exactly naive. And it can happen. But it's tough. And definetly worthwhile.

@Juan: wot

Yeah, sufficiently studied magic sounded cool.

Uh, maybe they eventually discovered the root of the power? The source of magic?

And harnessed it for their technology?

So they'd be magicians with kick-ass Magitech!

Or [up] that sounds even cooler.

@Cygan: there was a thread complaining about how there wasn't a lot of comics that weren't about superheroes. And someone suggested that we shold really break the mold.

then we remembered The Dark Tower exists...

Ah, okay.

Anyway, should it be a multi-planet/solar system dealie, or limited to one planet?

Also, power armours- yes, something subtle, or no?

And, uh, nanomagitech?

I'd say Solar System. Around 5-8 planets. Manageable, and allows for spaceships and crews.

It's not exactly naive. And it can happen. But it's tough. And definetly worthwhile.

And a planet filled entirely with shrimp! -gets shot-

I mean... Ummmm, Yeah, maybe 6-8 planets :p

juancarlos11 Since: Aug, 2011
#13: Feb 12th 2011 at 7:22:21 AM

Actually...a planet filled with shrimp could appear as one joke or something.

I like the idea that there are urban legends and people talk about planets undiscovered. With lots of shrimp...

It's not exactly naive. And it can happen. But it's tough. And definetly worthwhile.

The shrimp figured out magic first, and have populated a planet and are actively making their presence invisible >-3

Um, okay. 6 planets sounds manageable. Just the typical one-sun-with-the-planets-orbiting deal?

Also, planets: Terraformed, or each with native inhabitants?

We would have to create six races.

although, I really dig the idea of terraforming.

Hmmm...

Maybe only limited terraforming? Like, you could turn Mars into Earth, but Pluto only into Antarctica?

And then each race slowly started adapting to their planet?

6 races? we could come up with thousands! Different eco-systems and everything!

Forgot to Pothole the planet of Shrimp with Angel >_<, Shame on you Juan though, Wasn't it obvious!!!

Terra-forming seems like a good route too.

juancarlos11 Since: Aug, 2011

How about realtionships between Humans and Aliens? We could go the easy route and say something along the lines of: "After a big war between the alien alliance and humans, they decided to split the planets. One half of each planet was terraformed, the other half maintianed it's own lifestyle. This was only possible after the whole war downed the alien numbers incredibly"

[up]It's buffy, dearie. You're talking about Anya.

Hmmmm...

But we don't want to make Humans God Mode Sues, do we?

So how could we believably win a war against 5 other races?

Also- Power Armour. A Badass Long Robe, made out of nanomagitech?

Just a broad stroke. But, the idea is that we have to make an environment in which Humans and Aliens could live in the same planet. And I cannot think of anything except splitting planets.

It's not exactly naive. And it can happen. But it's tough. And definetly worthwhile.

Slight alterations to the bodies of both races, as well as terraforming the entire planet into ways that are suitable for the aliens as well as the humans.

Well, I can see it working.

Anyway, about the races...we've got six planets. Obviously the closest to the sun would be a desert planet.

And the furthest an ice planet.

Are the planets even in size and spread evenly across, or no?
