Last time I checked, even non-religious men tend to freak out in response to gay men.

Do not stereotype.

Freaking out isn't a good way to judge whether or not they've been turned on by someone of a sex/gender they aren't normally attracted to.

And now I'm tempted to link the article about "homophobes" being turned on by gay porn...

Things like that are exactly why it isn't a good way to judge whether or not someone is gay/bi/pan/poly.

Do you know what a faculty is? How does instinctive preference of one sex over another fit in there?

One can affect changes to one's mind.

At the very least, I have been able to do that.

@Spain Sun Well, you asked why some people pay so much attention to those verses and I said it's because of those people projecting their issues onto Scripture.

What's the problem?

@KCK: Leviticus. Romans was written by, who was it, Paul? Who wasn't acting for God, he was writing letters of advice.

Actually, depending on your preference (two kinds of religious interpretations, one purely sociological, one of a category I'm not sure how to describe; I guess 'speculation on the nature of the Bible' would be the best descriptor.):

1. The New Testament cancelled out the old Covenant. In which case, it can be safely ignored.

2. (secular, social): The last parts of the Bible were written nearly two thousand years ago. There's no reason to think that a book written two bloody millenia ago should be followed to the letter, considering that it was directed at people that lived 2k years ago.

3. The Bible was the commands and teachings of God, written down by humans. Now, as we know, humans are fallible and it's extremely unlikely there aren't errors in the Bible.

4. The Bible is the absolute authority on everything, has zero mortal errors whatsoever, and is absolutely compatible in every way with life in the 21st century. In which case, you should be worried as much about wearing clothing made of two different sorts of fibers as you should about t3h g4yz. I'm pretty sure very few people with more intelligence than the average mollusk take this interpretation seriously.

In regards to forcing changes on your own mind: That's not healthy or sane. Anyone who can conciously change their own base traits is either hurting themselves psychologically, or already messed up in a major way.

I've seen that study. All it showed was that homophobic men tended to show a physical response to gay porn (e.g. erections). Another study says men can get erections from strong emotional responses (e.g. from being angry).

Homophobic man + gay porn = RAGE BONER

In other words, you're saying you are bisexual but that you have somehow consciously shut off your desire to have sexual relations with men?

Not so much as I've shut off my desire, so much as I push any opportunity for it away. Sort of like Dobby going "BAD DOBBY!" every time he misbehaves.

Only instead of physical harm, one just makes agonized facial expressions.

You can actually get erections from a lot of things.

Including, for some people, trying not to get an erection.

Not so much as I've shut off my desire, so much as I push any opportunity for it away. Sort of like Dobby going "BAD DOBBY!" every time he misbehaves.

Only instead of physical harm, one just makes agonized facial expressions.

This isn't you being devout, this is you being repressed.

I would advise seeing a counselor of some sort, but I can't give any advice beyond that.

This isn't you being devout, this is you being repressed.

Why can I not help but equate you with the Sith now?

From now on, my mental image of you is that of a Sith lord.

That isn't healthy dude. That's repression. Which hurts. Now just accepting that you have certain tastes? This is nice. Very nice.

Except that I am quite thoroughly happy, such that I am unable to empathize with those of you who are all depressed and cynical.

Have you considered that that's just you, and that you shouldn't project it onto everybody else?

From what I've seen, my view thus far looks very accurate.

KCK: I don't know. Moving on.

Anonym: There are a lot of jokes I could make here, but seriously, you should consider the possibility that you're repressed. See a psychologist of some sort. A qualified one, and get a more expert opinion.

edit: Repressed doesn't necessarily mean you're unhappy. It just means you're unhealthy.
