I'm having a small problem with elemental mages in my story. As in, each mage would specializes in a certain element that reflects his or hers personality (since mana comes from the soul in this story, I thought that would mean powers and personality would be connected).

The problem is that magic potions play an important part in this story. But since each mage would specialize in an certain element...

Maybe potion brewing would be something all mages could do, regardless of element? Maybe something all mages could do but those of a certain element would be better at it?

Thanks, and forgive me for bothering you.

What do these magic potions do?

Has ADD, plays World of Tanks, thinks up crazy ideas like children making spaceships for Hitler. Occasionally writes them down.

It depends on the ingredients. Some do simple things, like healing (not as effective as being healed by either water or life mages, though) making things get smaller or bigger, turn a metal into another (once again, not as effective of having an earth mage to do it).

The potion important to the story allows spirits to return to the world of the living. It's ingredients would be a bitch to find and it was only sucessfully used twice.

Well how about each mage has to specialise in different potions based on their element?

Makes sense! Errr... The mage who brews said poison could be a death or darkness mage, then? Hum...

Thanks!
