Chirp, Chirp, Chirp

Annoying...

Chirp, Chirp, Chirp

Please, I just went to bed a couple hours ago...

Chirp, Chirp, Chirp

"Hmmg..." A quiet whimper went in the dark room.

Melanie Miller, teenage girl and mage of Lire lifted her head from her pillow, her sleep taken away by a pair of little birds singing merrily outside her window in expectation of the first rays of the sun. The young mage stood up slowly from her bed and reached blindly for her outfit in the utter darkness of the house. By memory she located her cape and hat and put them on before opening her window, spooking away the little birds away in the process.

Melanie's house was on high terrain, just outside of the small town of Lire. The first floor of the house worked mostly as an open storage area and kitchen and the second floor containing the living quarters. It was a little unconventional but since the previous resident was a cranky old mage not many people asked too many questions.

The young mage deftly exited her room though the window to step on the deck of the second floor and from there she climbed the wooden stairs to the roof of the house. Since the girl was awake already she might as well enjoy the spectacle as Lire came to life by the first rays of the morning sun. She sat comfortably on the roof, and from up so high she could comfortably see all of the city as the last caresses of the night breeze grace her face.

All the way to the other side of the town, on the high watchtower that guarded the only road into the city she saw the men of the town guard changing shifts. Closer to her home she could see priests and priestesses, disciples of the Lady of the Hills, gathering on the yard of their small temple. They had been awfully busy lately with all the preparations for the spring festival. Still, their enthusiasm had become infectious and most of Lire were in good spirits as one of their greatest reasons to party were approaching.

And speaking of partying Melanie spotted a small group of women walking towards the town's tavern. Melanie knew that if she kept watching in that direction she would soon see a bunch of husbands being dragged back home, for a good scolding and a better breakfast.

And so, slowly but surely the whole city came alive, the shepherds taking their sheep to the best pastures, small children running all over the streets and the countryside, the day market filling up as everyone brought over the day wares, the helpful town midwife walking together to help the woman who would soon be the town's newest mother...

And while all this happened the young mage simply stared, yawning just once more due to her lost sleep before standing up. There was a lot to do today, sleep could wait a little while longer.

Johnson went down to the tavern, just to see if there was any new information floating around, or any juicy gossip. He knew that gossip was very rarely all the way true, but behind every bit of it was a kernel of truth. And at night, maybe he would try again to get a drink. In other towns, the barmen would gladly give a youth with a sword a drink. Yet not here.

For some reason, the barman was reluctant to give alcohol to a "kid". This irritated Johnson to no end, he was a man grown, he had killed his fair share of men, and he was more broad shouldered than most of these men around here. And the wives were, once again, dragging their husbands home. Poor guys, he hoped he would never wind up like that. Shackled down by a wife like an iron chain and ball. He just chuckled a little. That was probably what would have happened had he not ran off.

He was by now just contemplating, he had run all the way out here...

The battles had gotten to be a bit tiresome literally, he was sore about everywhere from slaughtering so many in three battles, one after the other, he just sighed. At least he had a break...and no jobs to do.

Kin just finished another job in the town, he had been up late with Sam, one of the local youths. Kin sighed, this town was so peaceful compared to some of the other ones he had visited. Ones that made him out to be some sort of social pariah. All because of this arm destined only to destroy enemies. Before coming here, he had to destroy an enemy, and feel as the flesh bubbled underneath his claw and turned red followed by a bloodless explosion of energy as he finished. His arm, heavily scarred as his Tell...at least these villagers did not know about his history.

He put the long sleeve back on. Sam treated him very well indeed, and made Kin feel welcome. He happened to be walking down to the same area as Johnson and Melanie.

Andrew rubbed some of the sleep out of his eyes, stupid market day making him get up early. Ever the dutiful son, he set up the family stall, checked that the finished work was all there ready for collection, and all the tools were ready for work.

Now to find the craftsman. Andrew didn't quite understand the appeal of the weekly card night, it had gotten boring after the fifth one he'd attended. And none of the card games had been all that challenging, in fact he'd quickly been banned from playing for money. But that's where Father would be. He looked back down the road to where their house was, Mother was coming. Father was in for it.

"Good morning, Mother, you sit, I'll get Father," Andrew called when she arrived, running off before she could reply.

He was too busy considering what he needed to get from the market before the festival that he didn't see the man in the black armour. And ended up on his arse in front of the tavern.

"Ow."

Johnson helped the guy up, only to scowl down at him, "Watch where you're going..."

This kid had the appearance of the dutiful son of a working man. He and Johnson were actually about equal in raw strength, he would think.

"My apologies, sir," Andrew replied, brushing as much of the dust off as he could, "I'm not much of a morning person."

He entered the tavern, holding the door for the other man. Inside he weaved through the semi-conscious forms - stepping over splayed arms and dodging spills - to one with similar coloured hair. He gave it a poke.

"Bart! Could I have a glass of water for the old man?" he called to the barkeep who seemed to be taking sadistic pleasure in watching the wives berate their husbands home, then said firmly into his father's ear, "Wake up, Father. The stall's waiting."

Kin walked in after the big guy that had been talking to the black armored man, and Johnson soon followed the red haired boy.

Kincadis looked over Andrew, not realizing he was ogling the muscles and yet smooth edge of the man.

Kin realized what was happening and looked away and started pacing.

Johnson just let Kin alone, and sighed, he hoped he was not like this when he got done with drinking. That red head was strange, though.

Andrew felt someone's eyes on the back of his neck, but studiously ignored them. Presumebly it was the black armoured guy, judging by the sword he'd be a mercenary. They tended to be observant.

Bart handed Andrew a mug of water, he thanked the barkeep and prompted poured it over his father's head.

The man sat bolt upright and shook himself like a dog, "What was that for, boy?"

"Father," Andrew began, wiping the water off his face, "it's market day, and would you rather have had Mother wake you?" The sodden man paled, and ran out the door. Andrew spun on his barstool, "So here for the festival?" He certainly didn't recognise either of them, and they were fairly unique. Though he'd been a bit busy lately.

Johnson nodded, "I am mostly just here on vacation...I am what you could call a mercenary, job gets tiresome after so many fights in a row. I...did not really know there was a festival."

Kincadis stopped his pacing and looked at Anthony, a red blush filling his face, "Oh...I...uh...sure! Festival sounds fun."

"Well, if you're after a quiet, peaceful place, I can't think any place much more boring than here. Nothing ever happens here."

Andrew politely ignored the red-head's stutter and blush, it reminded him of that kid - Sam? - who'd a crush on him for a while. Best just to pretend it was nothing, delay any trouble until if the kid gathered the courage to ask.

"Yeah, it is. There's dances and games, all kinds of fun stuff."

Johnson smiled, "Good...I enjoy a good brawl as much as the next guy, but...well, when its brawl after brawl..."

The young mercenary walked over to the bar owner, deciding to see if he could get some liquor.

Meanwhile, Kin smiled nervously, "Oh, yeah, that does sound like fun." Already, in Kin's mind, several scenarios were playing themselves out. He just needed to muster the courage to ask...

"Hee, young Andrew... picking up the remains of your father from the rest of our party boys?" A woman's voice said from the doorway of the inn.

There stood two of the most well known women in the town lately. The one who spoke was Lanira the midwife. She was the kind of woman that everyone knew since she made it her job to get into everyone's business, giving advice whenever it was wanted or not. Still, her warm disposition, motherly nature and kindness made it hard for people to turn her completely away as she was always there when people needed her the most.

At her side was Katrine, the city's youngest bride and soon to be youngest mother. While she didn't have the grace or beauty of the nobility, the young bride was still ones of the prettiest girls of the countryside. Adding to that how Katrine was smart, warm and kind made it sure that she earned the heart of the whole town.

"Good morning, Andrew. Oh and you two gentlemen" Katrine said with a little shy smile.

"We're just here to see if the luckiest man in town made it through the night" Lanira said, inspecting the downed gentlemen of Lire with a slightly mischeavous smile "This sweet thing is in no condition to drag anybody home"

As soon as Johnson saw Katrine, thoughts rushed through his head, and he offered a greeting, "Hello, Miss Katrine..." He hoped that was sufficient.

Johnson had seen Katrine there on his first day in the town of Lire, and so he became a bit infatuated with her, though it would take a great sum of money to make him admit to that. He was still used to fighting and training, so he was unsure if trying to pursue a relationship with her would be wise.

Kincadis looked over and smiled a little, "Hello, Miss Katrine, Miss Lanira..."

"Good morning ladies, no I've already sent my father on his way. Just because they won't let me play doesn't me I should abandon him completely." Andrew looked across the room at the 'luckiest man in Lire', he was lying on his face, chewing his hair in his sleep. "Do you need any help getting him home?"

Lanira eyed him, "Avoiding your parents are you?"

Andrew scratched the back of his head, "Well, just a little. Even though I got Father up, Mother will still want to yell at him a little. So, need any help?"

"Nonsense boy, this arm of mine has dragged more husbands and wifes back home than you'll ever see lying in the floor in a single night!" Lanira boasted, grabbing at her arm just below the shoulder, though she then winked at Andrew "... Though if you boys want to lend a hand we'll be mighty thankful about it"

"I got some sweets from my sister, if you wish you can have some of them for your help" Katrine was quick to add. She had moved to her husband's side and was now poking him in the cheek lightly "Darling... it's morning already... darling!"

Katrine didn't seem too disturbed by finding her husband in this state, indeed she seemed slightly amused by it. Clearly she had not seen him like this before. The man, named Mike, was barely giving a coherent response to being poked in the cheek.

The stone church of Lire stood quietly, most of its men and women in town, preparing for the festival. But past its large wooden doors, a single woman knelt in prayer at the house of worship, before a small altar in dedication of the Lady of the Hills herself. The way she carried herself hinted that she was a priestess herself, and you'd almost be correct - but she never held the title officially.

After silently sending her thoughts to her goddess, the young woman stood and began to turn when the voice of a familiar friend spoke to her.

"So, what was in your prayers, Lilia?" Smiling at the doorway of the church stood another young woman, red hair wavy and flowing like a sea of red, eyes a striking yet beautiful green. Her robes signified her as a priestess of the Lady.

Smiling back at the priestess, Lilia ran over and gave her a warm embrace. "Rosemary! It's been too long."

Rosemary let out a hearty laugh and hugged the girl back before pulling her away, clearing her throat while putting her hands on Lilia's shoulders. "It's priestess Rosemary now!" she said, her tone of voice full of mock condescension. "And here I thought you'd be the one to become a priestess first, not me."

A nervous chuckle escaped Lilia's lips. "Well, I did kind of get swept away from all that..."

"Everyone was really shocked when you ran off. I remember thinking 'Lilia would never do that; she's the most faithful of us all! Oh, when I get my hands on that Anthony-'"

"Now, now, Anthony's not that bad," Lilia tried to assure her friend. "He's... energetic, and a bit impulsive, but he's really a good man at heart."

Catching herself, Rosemary nodded. "Of course. I won't doubt your judgment!"

"...then why do I feel like you're doing the exact opposite..."

"Ahem! Anyway, that doesn't make you leaving the church any less shocking. What made you decide to run off with him?"

Nervously, Lilia's eyes found their way towards the ground. "Well, Anthony really loved hearing accounts of what it was like outside Lire, and I enjoyed him sharing them with me. Mountains that reached deep into the sky, vast deserts full of secrets beneath the sand, great cities of wealth and prosperity, things like that. The more we talked about it, the more we wanted to see those things for ourselves. Until eventually... well, you know the rest."

"Aha!" Rosemary remarked.

"...'aha'?"

The priestess quickly cleared her throat. "Nothing, nothing... I'd tell you to keep safe, but you seem to be fine after three, four years, so I guess I don't need to, right?"

"R-right."

"That didn't stop us all from worrying though. You've heard the stories, right? About how Stramdor forces are spreading through Estia?"

A solemn atmosphere surrounded the two women as Lilia gave a slight nod. "I've been to a lot of places, and I've seen some of their handiwork. Churches burnt to the ground, idols smashed, worshipers tried and executed... I wish I had the strength to speak against them, but..."

Rosemary gave her friend a comforting pat on the shoulder. "It's alright; I'm sure you did what you could to help people during those hard times."

Lilia nodded quietly again.

"...though... I can't imagine Anthony keeping quiet about those things."

"...yeah... He's gotten into trouble more than a few times with them, but he always finds some way of getting out of it."

"I can just imagine... how is he doing now?"

"Well..."

Katrine's smile remained as sweet as always though her eyes shone with a bit of suppressed mischievousness as she continued poking her husband "Oh, if you would share that secret with me I would love to hear it, Andrew"

Lanira meanwhile seemed to have gotten a little distracted, though she smiled as a young man came into the tavern and excused himself before he started looking for his wife.

"Well then, Bart another glass!" Andrew called, then continued to Katrine, "Water's what the body needs after a night's drinking, y'know. Thank you Bart." He lifted the glass, held it over Mike's head, Katrine's mischevious smile was all the permission he needed, but Andrew felt that fairness required him ask one last time, "Michael Jonathan Weaver, are you going to get up or do you need the Woods Family Cure?" Mike didn't respond, which Andrew took for a no. With a shrug he tipped the glass over the lazy man's head.

Mike's reaction wasn't nearly as dramatic as Old Man Wood's, he merely raised his head to look blearily at Andrew and slurred, "What'zat for?"

"It's morning and your dear lady is here to take you home."

"I'd thought I'd find you up here." A voice behind Melanie said, tinged with some humor. Behind her on the roof, Sabina sat, smiling. Her pack was on, situated at the small of her back, the scythe staff in her lap. She was crosslegged, and barefoot as always, leaning back on her palms. She stood as well, sticking the staff into the pack and brushing imaginary dust off before standing beside Melanie, overlooking the town.

" The transitions between night and day are still amazing to watch, even after these years... Another festival begins..." She mused, looking down, watching the proceedings.

Michael looked slowly around as if trying to find to find her dear lady among her three identical sisters. Which he didn't knew she had until just about now "Katrine, my love!" the man slurred as he tried to rise to his feet... only fail and land on his butt once again.

Katrine giggled a little bit "Yes my darling. It's time to get you home so that good Bart can clean his fine establishment"

The young bride then turned to Andrew "As you know Michael isn't one to drink... but the boys came to the house and all but kidnapped him for a night of celebration. You should have seen him cry as they dragged him away, my poor Michael"

"I 'urely did not crye~! I wouldn't cry in front of my pre...presiou... precious Katrine" Michael said from the floor, apparently without any intentions left of rising up.

"Right, right, darling"

"Morning Sabina" Melanie said smiling after finding the company of her friend so early in the day "You silent movements are unrivaled as always... How long have you been sitting there?"

The young mage walked over to Sabina and offered her hand to help her stand, after the which she looked back at the town "I guess that's the one sight that never will never get old"

"Not very long. Just got back from taking a look 'round for the Guard again. Nothing, as usual."

She tapped a foot idly against the roof tiles, before shifting her weight and digging in the pack. "I found a few more of those shiny rocks you liked, last time." She pulled out two small, uncut gemstones, one a garnet and the other quartz. "They always smell slightly different from the normal rocks, and, sure enough, turn colors when I wash 'em off..." She offered them to Melanie, still grinning slightly.

Melanie grabbed the quartz and the garnet and quickly looked them over before nodding quite satisfied "They are just perfect" the girl said, as she stored them inside a little pouch.

"Thank you, very much Sabine" Melanie started as she walked towards the ladder that would bring her down to first floor of the house "I promise I won't tell anyone once they find the scorched remains of your training ground" The young mage teased, finally reaching the ground.

Johnson and Kincadis spoke up.

Johnson spoke first, "O-Of course I'd like to help, Katrine."

Kin spoke shortly after, "Me too! I don't really have much better things to do."

Johnson thought, it is hopeless, Katrine was married to that guy and there is no chance in hell she'd ever reciprocate anything from him. Yet, he could dream couldn't he? But there was a time when dreaming became no substitute for reality.

His world had slowly became a tumbling twister of hormones.

"Mm. I diiid manage to set fire to one of my note papers last night." Sabina grinned sheepishly as she followed after her. Seeing a tiger Sylvan act sheepish in any way might surprise many. She crouched down and stepped off the roof, landing beside the mage in a crouch, standing up slowly. The drop wasn't that large, so she didn't worry. She'd landed on a rock before, though, and nearly faltered, and was careful to watch what she was landing on. Though Melanie's house didn't usually have many dangerous landing spots.
