Yep. Both examples are good, but I'm a little more in love with the one [up]

Meh.

Yeah, that goes for the literal example, but really, nowadays, that usage of it is all but dead.

Back then it meant having a prop to essentially summon god and have him fix an issue; nowadays it's more along the lines of an Ass Pull.

[up] Not necessarily true. Imho, that's if the trope is done wrong. When done right, the trope can be done beautifully. (for example-the ending of Toy Story 3...-I'm not going to spoil it for those who haven't seen the movie yet-it would seriously ruin the awesome beauty of Pixar once again doing something right)

Also I think it'd be good for people to brush up on the origin of the trope. A little education never hurt anyone.

I still standby my statement that Plot Devices are not picturable (this being one of them) so leaving it imageless would really be the best thing. Still, if we are going to give it an image, the historic Trope Maker is much better than an unclear fictional example.

[up] Exactly. Plot devices are harder to do, but the when you have the trope maker-it just works, I find it, personally, genius.

I'm sold. The diagram is good.

Not to mention otherwise it will be barely pictureable.

Yeah, I go for the classical example, since even after time, it's still applicable.

[up]Agreed. It's the original, and in the case of plot devices-it's the best way to go if an image is wanted. Plus it's genius!idea

Hand Of God Bump.

So seems like everyone's good with the diagram image, should we just put it up then? Or is it to remain imageless?

Put it I say. But leave the thread running for a little while so that people can complain if they don't like it.

I like the non-diagram one because it gives better context of it being a play, and the other actors' behavior imply he's a godlike being.

I suppose, but I think we all know what will win, BUT if that's what everyone feels will settle this, then go for it.

It's a block of text that doesn't give you more than the trope title.

Just put up a picture of Stephen, oh, I'm sorry, DOCTOR Strange. He exhibits all the points of a type 2 DEM. The guy has a spell to solve anything that will save the heroes, shows up out of, literally, nowhere, and is the go-to guy for whenever some weird s**t is going on that you don't understand. Hell, his power levels even change so that, while he may be too weak to help fight a monster NOW, he'll totally be able to save you from the VERY SAME THING LATER. Even now, where his powers've been supposedly weakened, he's still a DEM. If he had a bit more power, he would be The Wizard Who Did It. Hell, just take a look at this.

Doctor Strange, Deus Ex Machina Extraordinaire.

I think that's a good title. Or maybe "Screw the rules, I have magic!".

[up]Image title is so long it breaks the parser. Looking at it by copy-pasting the url and fixing it, it's not a very good image anyway.

I don't really think it's necessary, since the majority of posters seem to be content with the diagram image. But no one's stopping anyone from throwing one up if they want to.
