Nuzlockes can get boringly easy if you grind too hard.
And gen 6 giving you an awesome EXP share that is set to "on" by default makes it happen on accident.
Also remember the "dupes" rule; to avoid a box full of duplicate pokémon during a nuzlocke, players are allowed to catch the second or third wild pokémon in an area instead of the first, but only if the first one is a duplicate or pre/evolution of an already caught pokémon.
You of course are allowed to catch duplicates if you so choose.
Oh, and revives? Just sell 'em, can't use them in a nuzlocke anyway. Money is better than baggage.
Though some people who find the nuzlocke trial difficult will argue that found revives are fair, but not bought ones.
IMO just sell them. But if you really must keep them, leave it as a literal last resort; for your final pokémon in your PC box.

The rest of my team ate shit because I have nothing that counters Bulk Up.
◊
I cheesed my way through the last fight via Astonish flinching and Supersonic.
Wow.
That's a lot of RIP.
Goddammit, Schezo... || *insert incredibly thirsty copypasta about Dr. Ratio*Trained Strong up to the rest of my team's level. Beat Grant without much difficulty. Caught an Emolga on Route 10. Beat Korrina in Geosenge Town with no casualties, largely thanks to Deacon's Sleep Powder spam. Caught a Stunky on Route 11. Encountered a Solosis in Reflection Cave, but Piper killed it with a crit. Ran into Battle Girl Hedvig.
Hedvig's Hawlucha wiped my entire team.
Y Nuzlocke FAILED
Everything I have is highly conductive, and the whole "Nincada is a ground type and knows Sand Attack so why evolve it into yet another flying type" strategy worked out okay until I got to the Magnetric, which Quick Attacked me to death after I made the mistake of letting it buff itself with Howl while I was throwing sand in its face. It swept most of my team with Shock Wave, and once again I had to stave off the inevitable with John via flinchhax and confusion. And that wouldn't have even worked if it hadn't been too blind to hit anything with Thunder Wave to keep me from outspeeding it every turn.
So now I'm down to two Pokemon, again.
RIP:
- Fenrir the Gyarados: LV 7-26
- Hope the Nincada: LV 6-26
- Poppy the Volbeat: LV 13-13
- Sia the Whismur: LV 6-19
Total casualties so far: 10

Doing a Red Nuzlocke, using memeverse to update
, but heres the gist of it so far:
Picked Charmander, even though it's the least effecient/most challenging choice for a Nuzlocke. Just because it's cooler than a cabbage dinosaur, though the tank turtletoise is sort of neat too. Smaug shall become fire, become death.
I go by two important clauses; no dupes, even if my original catch of a species faints and first encounters on routes don't count until the game gives me access to balls. But after that if I run out of balls that's my own damn fault and the first encounter is considered a bust.
Predictably I ended up with a Rattata on Route 1. Through the power of uncreative naming they shall be Ratical.
Oh hey, Route 22 is right here, lets go see what I get! A Nidoran, cool! I suck at names so he shall be Nito. What's a Dark Souls, never heard of it, nope, nuh uh, never.
Barely beat up my rival, BITCH. No, I'm not shit talking, that's his name. Fucker made me use up all two of my potions so my 'mons wouldn't die.
Route 3 gives us Lombardi the Pidgey. Yay, now my eventual Charizard doesn't have to be a Fly Slave!
Viridian Forest and OH MY FUCK IS THAT A PIKACHU CATCH IT CATCH IT CATCH IT! He shall be Tesla and he is mine!
Learned that Gust is a Normal type move in Gen 1. Wait WHAT?!
A realization dawned on me as I looked at my team and remembered what the first gym was. FFFFFFFFFFFF-
"Uh, Nidoran learns Double Kick, right?" Yeah, at level fourty fucking three.
"Shit."
Braced myself and entered the gym. At least the lackey only had ground types without rock or ground moves, so that buffed my EXP a bit, but I still ran back to heal like a stingy whimp. Sandshrew is cute tho.
Hello, Brock. Geodude first, eh? Aw shit it's spamming Defense Curl and now the only thing that can hurt it even a little is Ember.
Onix... Whooboy, that Bide had me worried, since I had only resisted moves to hit with, but then it dawned on me to spam stat lowering moves since he spent so many turns Biding.
Then the fucker crit Tackles Lombardi to death. FUCK. No Pidgeot for me.
Eventually Onix goes down without further casualties. Off to Mt. Moon.
Wellp, Spearow caught on Route 3. They shall be known as Pierce through leaps of logic in my naming process.
Mt. Moon proper gives me... Dwayne "The Rock" Geodudeson. Beat up a trainer too and went back to the Route 3 Pokécenter and bought the Karp. Iku-Turso shall become the terror from the depths...
To be continued...
So for the dupes rule, if you fail to catch a thing, but the same thing pops up in a different area, it's fair game, right?
And is there a limit to how many encounters you are permitted to go through if you keep getting dupes? Because in Gen 1 it's a bit of a problem to run into 5 things you already caught before you come across a new thing.
Well, so far I have decided that a failed capture disallows any Pokémon within that specific area, but the same 'mon in a different area is fair to catch.
And as nobody wants a box full of pidgeys and rattatas, I'll look for non-dupes in areas until I give up. Besides, having like 10 Fly or Cut slaves removes any urgency of keeping them alive. Plus dupes are just boring to have.
Yes, this does run the risk of rendering the playthrough unwinnable because anyone who can learn a necesarry HM is dead, but that would be on me for fucking up. Risk is the spice of a nuzlocke, afterall.

Yes, general rule is if you haven't owned it and it appears first on route, then you catch it. There's some unclear/decide for yourself room in a)you have it's pre-evo but didn't bother levelling it and b)you have caught an evo'd version and are facing a pre-evo; but the general case of escapees is clear.
And if you own everything that shows up on the route then that's it - the route is worthless. On the upside, if you have everything except for a rare, you have an opportunity to farm for that rare. There's no defined limit for encounters.

I see. Just didn't know what the general conseus was about this stuff, even though it's all a Self-Imposed Challenge so technically you can make your own rules.
Gonna grind with some of my rookie 'mons for a bit as to not have them as a liability, then it's time to challenge Guile Lt. Surge.
I've been keeping an update/"liveblog" thing going about the whole thing too.
Lots of progress in Red (VC) since last time. Got my fourth badge and contemplating on spending money at the Celadon Department Store and Game Corner...
Are Pokémon from the Game Corner legit? They're not legends, so... But then again, some TM's would be nice.
Also got the free Eevee. I want to put it in my team, but it feels redundant...
Current Team:
- Smaug the Charmeleon, starter, Lv 31
- Tesla the Pikachu, Viridian Forest, Lv 27
- Nito the Nidorino, Route 22 (between Viridian City and Victory Road), Lv 27
- Iku-Turso the Gyarados, Magikarp Salesman, Lv 26
- Glut Tony the Hypno, Route 11 (east of Vermillion City), Lv 28
- Bud the Gloom, Route 25 (just outside Sea Cottage/Bill's House), Lv 27
I've got fire(/flying), electric, poison(/ground), waternote , psychic and grass/poison. I've pretty much got all the Eeveelution types covered, so I dunno... The Eevee starts at Lv 25 so if I want to use it, I better add it ASAP so it doesn't fall behind. But what to evolve and who to swap?
Dang, double post, oh well.
I have finished my Pokémon Red Nuzlocke.
My
final
team
at
the
League
as well as my final results
.
Though after that, I of course went to Cerulean Cave, and well... THIS!
And I managed to do this bullshit
. I honestly didn't think I'd have the luck, but I did!
For some more highlights and stuff, keep scrolling back on my Nintendo Twitter play journal.
I have to say this about Vaporeon though; even though Psychic is the OP type in gen 1, Vaporeon having a massive Special stat, massive HP, access to Surf, Ice Beam and Blizzard coupled with Reflect (later Acid Armour) means it can tank nearly anything and hit like a truck in return in R/B/Y. The only things that give it issues are water and electric types with similarly ludicrous Special stats, at which point you just respond with a Hypno or Kadabra (or maybe a Haunter, but it has some low HP).

Well, since I just transferred all my Pokemon X Pokemon to Pokemon Bank, I decided I might as well go through the game again Nuzlocke style because I apparently have nothing better to do. I went with a female character (named Illya, which is probably not a name but it sounds cool) because I went with a male for my first playthrough and I figure some variety would be nice, I chose Chespin as my starter because the thing's adorable, and I decided to make the best decision of my life and have Calum, Shauna, Tierno, and Trevor call me "I'm in pain". This has led to amusing sentences from them such as "I'm in pain, wait!", "Hey there, I'm in pain!", and "Um, I'm in pain...", and I regret not doing this sooner. This run's got ten rules, so I'll save you the pain of reading all them by saying I have no Dupes Clause, Shinies and Legendaries are effectively immortal, battle style is Set, I can't use any more Pokemon in a Gym battle than the Gym Leader uses (although I unintentionally broke that with Viola since I didn't know she'd essentially lock me in her Gym until I beat her), no Exp. Share but Pokemon-Amie is fine (there are some limits on that though), and my naming theme is type fonts. So far I have one badge and zero deaths, although the battle with Viola was pretty tough since I was underleveled. it was a pretty good fight, though, and I'm actually glad that she wasn't a pushover like she was on my first playthrough. Anyways, my team at the moment, having just reached Route 4, is as follows:
- Papyrus the Chespin (Not to be confused with that Papyrus, although I was thinking of him when I named the little guy)
- Arial the Pidgey (A star player against Viola's Vivillion), caught on Route 2
- Bangers the Panpour (Please, go ahead and make your banging jokes), caught in Viridian- I mean Santalune Forest
- Gabriola the Fletchling (Also a big help against Viola), caught on Route 3
- Comic Sans the Bidoof (He's probably the worst thing I could've caught on that route other than Dunsparce or Farfetch'd and I don't like him), caught on Route 22
- Noteworthy the Budew, caught on Route 4
Well there's Illyasviel from nasuverse, which is a made-up name, but accidentally shortens to Illya for example in Fate Kaleid Liner Prisma Illya
I'm not familiar with Nasuverse stuff, so I've never heard of that Illya until now. That aside, I've made some more progress on the Nuzlocke, so I'll just give all my updates in a journal-like format. Just a fair warning, it might get a bit long.
After beating up a bunch of gardeners on Route 4, Illya made her way to Lumiose City, where the two most forgettable characters in the franchise, Dexio and Sina (who are returning in Sun and Moon because of course they are), railroaded her into visiting Professor Sycamore. Upon meeting the professor, Illya proceeded to wipe the floor with his team of Kanto starters as Shauna and Calum looked on in very subdued awe and Prof. Sycamore then presented Illya with the option of one of three Kanto starters. She chose Charmander with no hesitation whatsoever. Comic Sans the Bidoof was given the boot in favor of Mistral the Charmander. Comic Sans will now spend the rest of his days rotting away in the box.
I would also just like to point out that this line was said at one point:
I'm pretty sure that's the definition of special, Calum. I'm glad you know what words are, but you say that like it's a meaningful conclusion you've come to just recently.Following that, Illya decided to get a haircut before meeting Calum at Cafe Soleil and engaging in pointless stuff involving Diantha and Lysandre. After that, Illya decided to stop by a fancy local eatery, where the waiter decided the best way to interact with customers was to try killing their Pokemon. Illya got a bunch of mushrooms as a reward for her victories against the waiter (might've actually been three separate waiters, I wasn't keeping track), which she then sold for more than the price of her meal. The ramifications of a restaurant functioning in such a way that they experience negative profits like this is baffling.
Illya met Mr. Bonding (I'd make a joke but they've all been made) and Korrina (oh hey the only Gym Leader with plot relevance), disregarding both as she immediately went to catch her Route 5 Pokemon, which ended up being a female Furfrou named Corsiva. Afterwards Illya got into a battle with Tierno and... well... Arial didn't make it. His Corphish got off a Swords Dance-boosted Vicegrip on her and that was the end of it. Papyrus managed to avenge her, but even still, I'm sad to say we've got the first death of the run on our hands. ...Then Trevor ruins the moment by saying "Good to see you, Illya... Excuse me, I meant I'm in pain." Eh, hearing people call Illya "I'm in pain" always brings a smile, so I don't mind. Arial's spot was taken up by Corsiva, who as of this writing has been holding her own fairly well. Also, Papyrus evolved into a Quilladin after almost getting killed by a trainer's Kadabra. Fun times!
As of this moment, Illya stands at the gates of Parfum Palace, out to fix a Broken Bridge by obtaining the fabled Poke Flute, said to contain the power of an unlimited number of Awakenings (seriously, I love that little detail in the Kanto games). Also, Mistral evolved, so that's cool. That leaves our team looking like this:
- Papyrus the Quilladin (male, Sassy nature, lv. 16)
- Bangers the Panpour (male, Naughty nature, lv. 14)
- Gabriola the Fletchling (female, Impish nature, lv. 15)
- Noteworthy the Budew (male, Lonely nature, lv. 15)
- Mistral the Charmeleon (female, Calm nature, lv. 16)
- Corsiva the Furfrou (female, Timid nature, lv. 14)
Was this too long? I really hope this wasn't too long. I was originally going to have all my points bulleted, but I decided against it to make this shorter, although it still ended up really long.

It is pretty long, maybe try a folder.
Also i just realized the meaning of Arial the Pidgey. Generic font, generic bird. I like it. Shame they didn't last long. :(
Goddammit, Schezo... || *insert incredibly thirsty copypasta about Dr. Ratio*

Deacon and Cait beat Viola handily. Headed to Route 4. Recruited Mama Murphy the Flabebe. Immediately afterward, encountered a Ralts. I thought Ralts didn't have any proper attacks at that level. It did. RIP Mama Murphy, first casualty.
Not too torn up about it, though, as now that I've reached Lumiose, my new, better, sixth party member is Danse the Squirtle.
