Spider-Man General Discussion

Go To

This thread's for the Spider-Man comics and spin-offs, whether they're decades old or brand new.

  • Apart from the main Marvel Universe titles, Ultimate Spider-Man, Spider-Man "What If?" stories, crossovers, guest appearances in other books, Alternate Universe tales and things like Marvel's manga adaptations are all on-topic here.
  • Spider-Man 'family' books are on-topic (as are their own crossovers, guest appearances etc.) - e.g. Spider-Man 2099, Miles Morales, Spider-Woman, Silk, Spider-Gwen, Venom, Carnage, Black Cat, Red Goblin and Spider-Verse.
  • Characters and comics that originated in Spider-Man but are no longer directly connected to the spider-franchise (e.g. Punisher, Silver Sable) are not on-topic, unless you're discussing historical connections and crossovers. If in doubt, check before you write a long post. If this isn't the right place, there's a more general Marvel Comics thread which covers them.

Technically, Marvel's Infinity Comics (and their predecessors, Infinite Comics) are webcomics, not comic books, but it's fine to talk about their Spider-Man stories here.

Discussions that are only about Spider-Man adaptations in other media (films, video games etc.) are off-topic, but discussing the differences between the adaptations and the original comics is fine - as long as spoilers for the adaptations are tagged.

Please follow the spoiler policy rules - tag spoilers for the latest issues, for any previews or content leaks, and for off-topic comics. When including spoiler tags, try to write so that tropers can make an informed decision before viewing them (e.g. which series and issue will they spoil?).

     Original Thread OP
Since everyone likes talking about him. I know little about him(Ironically,I got nearly all I know about him from a Batman thread),but he's apparently important so I made this thread. Enjoy.

From what Paul says about 'responsibilities' and MJ referring to him working his way down a 'list' fans are speculating that he's making preparations for Leaving Earth for his home dimension and MJ is aware of his intentions and is just going to let him go. I think he never really recovered from losing the imaginary kids, he and MJ haven't been able to connect since, and he's just heading off to where he thinks he can make a difference

Paul just getting ready to leave is probably best. Though some are probably still bitter enough to want him to die horribly out of spite....and while I'm fine with him just going, I'm not going to begrudge those who want that death. I probably should, but screw it. Paul was a disaster and pointless from beginning to end, and never should have existed. Or at least, more of an attempt to make him something beyond an obstacle to Peter and MJ should have been tried, but it wasn't.

You mock Paul, but this is the cue for the Paulverse event, true believers.

Please remember that, ultimately, fictional works of entertainment are just that.

Rewatched the debut of the Hobgoblin in the 90s show, and I can really appreciate the irony now of Norman being a stressed out scientist worried about having to sign over his inventions to crooked businessman Wilson Fisk.

I thought it was weird as a kid that Norman and Fisk kept trusting Hobgoblin who repeatedly states how greedy and ambitious he was, and being shocked when he keeps betraying them both.

And yep, still stupid that Fisk and Norman keep trusting him.

Random question:

Was it ever confirmed that the Spider-Man: The Animated Series version of Peter Parker was visually based off of Nicolas Hammond from The Amazing Spider-Man (1978)?

I thought it was mentioned somewhere here, but I didn't find anything confirming it.

I've never heard this before.

I also don't know anything about the 70s show, so I took a look at the page.

...Uncle Ben's name was Max? And they didn't use any actual villains from the comics? I mean, I know Hulk and Wonder Woman also didn't fight any of their own villains in their 70s shows, but really, of all the rogues galleries to completely jettison, you picked Spider-Man's?

Ignoring what the comic books established around and just looking at the characters themselves, it is a lot easier to come up with a Spider-Man villain than a Hulk or Wonder Woman one.

Petty foes with small scale motivation and gimmicks are fine for Spider-Man. You don't need to ask how they're supposed to challenge a herculean rage monster, or why they're are so many Hulk level threats around. You can have a sneaky cat burglar like Black Fox or guy with a mask and gun like Crime Master be multi episode menaces for Spider-Man.

Wonder Woman's worse than Hulk because one also kind of expects her foes to be of national/international/conceptual significance, not just physically powerful or having some way around her physical power. This was easier back when it was World War II(just make them affiliated with Nazi/Imperial Japan) and probably why she remained a spy smasher for so long even after the way(make them spies/conspirators) but Spider-Man's always comparatively easy. There's unresolved crime in the general area. Peter Parker finds time to stop it as Spider-Man. Rinse and repeat. It's what makes the Judas Traveler, Mephisto, alternate universe stuff so frustrating? Why this book of all the ones you publish? Hulk doesn't really need villains though. Just something to make Bruce Banner upset. So the green door stuff is still kind of annoying.

I love the green door personally. The Immortal Hulk is one of my favourite runs of all time. Speaking of Hulk stuff though, one thing that got retconned and never followed up on is that the Spider that bit Peter Parker was irradiated by Gamma radiation, and came back through a green door as a giant talking vigilante spider monster named goddess. Would that technically make Peter a Gamma mutate?

It's gonna be fun on the bun!

I know Goddess, I like Goddess, though her name is too generic for my tastes.

There were several ways to have a giant spider vigilante without having it be the spider who bit Peter Parker. There were several ways to bring back the spider that bit Peter Parker without using gamma radiation-green door-one below all.

Exactly why did Hulk need to be more powerful? Especially if his book wasn't Going Cosmic? This whole one below all thing, yay another Marvel hell lord. One more helly than all the previous! I will say that I don't think Immortal Hulk was poorly written per se, just that it was a bad concept that takes away more than it adds. When Hulk went multiple personality it left the door open for plain simply ARRGH, SMASH stories involving Hulk, while also having new nighttime gangster Hulk, professor Hulk, scar Hulk, etc. It didn't force multiple personalities on every other gamma character the way the green door below all is now forced on all gamma mutates. It didn't lock all gamma usage into "always" bad the way Immortal Hulk did. Sure, on it's own merits, fine enough, but this is a shared universe, with much behind it and much besides it, and Hulk didn't actually come to an end so people were going to have to follow it too.

To bring this over to Spidey related stuff, I remember Hulk had to be told that Knull and The One Below All were different guys, because they serve pretty similar roles.

It did kinda lead into the reveal that Knull was just one of many evil primordial deities though. Which was more cool than trying to hype this one as the primordial evil.

No, we're talking about the good Goddess, Windleopard. She's the radioactive spider that bit Peter Park, back to life as a man sized spider, inspired to fight crime by Spider-Man and Silk.

A reminder -

We previously modposted to say that "cuck" is a term loaded with problematic connotations, and not one we want to see used in forum discussions.

It's been noted that some of the regulars who were posting in this thread at the time have slipped back into using it. As a consequence, some recent posts have been thumped.

Please don't use it in that way again. If we have to modpost a third time, or thump even more posts, there may be additional consequences. We'd like to avoid that.

For clarity: this doesn't just apply to the Spider-Man thread. Please don't use it elsewhere either.

ASM spoilers

Randy and Janice are back together

Ned Leeds goes free

Janice sets up evidence that incriminates her father

Paul's story sees him visit the 616 variant of a person from his own dimension called Cale. Paul offers him money and support. We learn from flashbacks that Cale was killed by Ben Rabin in his own world

While I don't want to jump on this in case I'm 'reading it wrong' as Lowe would say, there's a bit towards the end of the flashbacks where Paul holds the murdered original Cale in his arms and it's the most intimate Paul has been with anyone in this run. Could be that MJ's been 'the beard' all this time and Paul is gay?

Anyway, seems like 'the list' is just Paul donating money and support to all the variants of people killed in his father's genocidal attack on his own world, people he was paying off to look after his father while he exploited him for money and power, so he's 'atoning'
