Spider-Man General Discussion

Go To

This thread's for the Spider-Man comics and spin-offs, whether they're decades old or brand new.

  • Apart from the main Marvel Universe titles, Ultimate Spider-Man, Spider-Man "What If?" stories, crossovers, guest appearances in other books, Alternate Universe tales and things like Marvel's manga adaptations are all on-topic here.
  • Spider-Man 'family' books are on-topic (as are their own crossovers, guest appearances etc.) - e.g. Spider-Man 2099, Miles Morales, Spider-Woman, Silk, Spider-Gwen, Venom, Carnage, Black Cat, Red Goblin and Spider-Verse.
  • Characters and comics that originated in Spider-Man but are no longer directly connected to the spider-franchise (e.g. Punisher, Silver Sable) are not on-topic, unless you're discussing historical connections and crossovers. If in doubt, check before you write a long post. If this isn't the right place, there's a more general Marvel Comics thread which covers them.

Technically, Marvel's Infinity Comics (and their predecessors, Infinite Comics) are webcomics, not comic books, but it's fine to talk about their Spider-Man stories here.

Discussions that are only about Spider-Man adaptations in other media (films, video games etc.) are off-topic, but discussing the differences between the adaptations and the original comics is fine - as long as spoilers for the adaptations are tagged.

Please follow the spoiler policy rules - tag spoilers for the latest issues, for any previews or content leaks, and for off-topic comics. When including spoiler tags, try to write so that tropers can make an informed decision before viewing them (e.g. which series and issue will they spoil?).

     Original Thread OP
Since everyone likes talking about him. I know little about him(Ironically,I got nearly all I know about him from a Batman thread),but he's apparently important so I made this thread. Enjoy.

Ultimate Spider-Man#7

Jameson and Ben get dirt on Fisk from their deep throat source at the bugle, which turns out to be Robbie. Harry and Peter discover their suits have active A.I software. Harry patterns his on his father while Peter asks for his to be based off himself as he likes to talk out loud. Peter's A.I sounds a bit like Tom Hardy's rendition of Venom, uh oh. Harry and Peter spar, with Harry's A.I behaving typically like a disapproving Norman and he urges Harry to overcome a dominant Peter in the fight. Harry gets the upper hand. Suddenly, Iron Lad drops by, checking in after six months as he promised, he asks if Peter and Harry have become heroes yet.

I think they mean the twist about the Joker having three personalities.

It’s going to be funny in a sad way if that happens. You had two mostly functional people and because Tony or Doomreed included a suit AI, it’s going to unleash two monsters on the world. At a guess, Peter’s pico-suit is going to fuck off to find a new wearer before he can reset it.

Question now is: when does it hit the fan?

Earlier or later, we're approaching the point where things are gonna get CRAZY.

I mean this is a pipe dream but with all the mystical bullshit they’re doing now maybe this is leading to Spider-Man vs Mephisto. I mean Zeb Wells is gone, after breaking up two popular relationships.

Not only that, but there's a huge (not set in stone) chance that Nick Lowe is leaving Marvel in favor of Joe Quesada (remember him, kiddos? Mr. Co-Writer of OMD?)'s new Idaho-based comic book company Amazing Comics (Should I explain the irony here or no?) since Lowe has openly reacted to tweets about it.

To thicken the plot, SDCC 2024 had them showing a picture of Marvel people from a recent writing summit they had. Lowe isn't anywhere in the pic and Brevoort wasted no time trash-talking Lowe, saying The 8 Deaths of Spider-Man would've been better received if it was called "The 8 Deaths of Nick Lowe".

Now, it's very inappropriate to smack-talk about your co-worker in public like Brevoort has towards Lowe...but if Brevoort knew Lowe could be going out the door pretty soon?

I wish Quesada well with his company, sincerely. More competition in the industry can't hurt and he can't hurt any of the characters I like if he's off doing his own thing.

Zing.

[up][up][up] Yeah, I'm sure this will end in one of two ways, either A.I. Norman drives Harry to villainy, or somehow becomes it's own entity and fights Spider-Man. Because no matter what, every Peter needs to fight Norman at one point.

Eh, it's inappropriate to talk crap about your colleagues even if they are leaving. Or they've already left.

It's a small industry. Marvel has hired some awful editors, writers and artists over the years. But the classier professionals — both staffers and freelancers — generally say nothing if they have nothing good to say. At least unless the other person's already started a public beef.

While it's true that many Spider-fans may not miss Lowe, I'm sure some X-fans are already thinking about whether or not they'll miss Brevoort, and he's only just arrived there.

(Personally, I wouldn't particularly want him as a 2024 Spider-editor either)

Edit: In other news, Viz Media will be launching Spider-Man: Octo-Girl in October.

"Now, it's very inappropriate to smack-talk about your co-worker in public like Brevoort has towards Lowe." I mean, I'm guessing Brevoort and Lowe are probably friends, and that Brevoort was taking a friendly shot at him. That's a common enough thing. I remember a few years ago there was a bit of a trend of various creators shit-talking Chip Zdarsky.

Brevoort and Lowe are both aware that there's a very vocal group of people that hate Lowe's run editing the Spider-office. So Brevoort was referencing that as a bit of friendly teasing. I don't believe for a moment that he was legitimately talking smack about Lowe.

Oh.

I was hearing a completely different story. Namely that Brevoort has been loathing Lowe ever since Avengers vs. X-Men.

Those jabs are overt the top jokes. They've been keeping up this ongoing gag of Brevoort and Lowe being mortal enemies and blaming each other for not putting down the toilet seat, but it's that, a running joke between two friends.

Dan Slott revealed that his plans for Spider-Man before Secret Wars 2015 were for "Peter struggling as the (unwilling) owner of a small start up company. Otto would've had some jobs lined up that Peter would've found ethically gray. And when Parker Industries would start taking off, it would butt heads with Stark Industries, who would frequently win out to things Parker Industries was trying to get off the ground".

"The marching orders for the next era of Marvel was to come up with a drastic change that would've happened to your character after the 8 month gap— something that would've landed them in a crazy, new, and completely unexpected status quo. Taking the leap of "What if Parker Industries massively succeeded during that time?" fit that bill."

He also talks about Queenpin Felicia and his original plans for Ends of the Earth.

I do think that people would have responded better to the original idea.

Also, geez, yeah, that would have been a very good reason for Felicia to be absolutely furious with Spider-Man and with doing the “right thing”

Don't Prowler and Solo seem like more natural replacements for Black Cat and Venom? Maybe Puma and Solo? Still, something feels wrong about the Spider-Man book being unable to use Black Cat and Venom but having access to Black Widow. With the revelation of who was originally planned it would have seemed more natural to me to go full crossover and say Spider-Woman Jessica or Arachne Julia with Black Widow, which is why sometimes I'm better off not knowing the exact details...

Mixed feelings on Queen Pin Black Cat. Would have been nice to have seen that wrapped up more quickly, but Silk did put it to good use. I've criticized Marvel for their poor planning before, but I have to admit the serendipitous nature of the company's plotting has produced interesting stories.

[up] Silk was the only book that made great use out of Queenpin Black Cat, treating her with a lot more nuance and sympathy. She was complex, and still showed her compassionate side.

Also, the two had so much romantic tension. They were gayer than Silk's actual gay friends.
