This thread's for the Spider-Man comics and spin-offs, whether they're decades old or brand new.
- Apart from the main Marvel Universe titles, Ultimate Spider-Man, Spider-Man "What If?" stories, crossovers, guest appearances in other books, Alternate Universe tales and things like Marvel's manga adaptations are all on-topic here.
- Spider-Man 'family' books are on-topic (as are their own crossovers, guest appearances etc.) - e.g. Spider-Man 2099, Miles Morales, Spider-Woman, Silk, Spider-Gwen, Venom, Carnage, Black Cat, Red Goblin and Spider-Verse.
- Characters and comics that originated in Spider-Man but are no longer directly connected to the spider-franchise (e.g. Punisher, Silver Sable) are not on-topic, unless you're discussing historical connections and crossovers. If in doubt, check before you write a long post. If this isn't the right place, there's a more general Marvel Comics thread
which covers them.
Technically, Marvel's Infinity Comics (and their predecessors, Infinite Comics) are webcomics, not comic books, but it's fine to talk about their Spider-Man stories here.
Discussions that are only about Spider-Man adaptations in other media (films, video games etc.) are off-topic, but discussing the differences between the adaptations and the original comics is fine - as long as spoilers for the adaptations are tagged.
Please follow the spoiler policy rules
- tag spoilers for the latest issues, for any previews or content leaks, and for off-topic comics. When including spoiler tags, try to write so that tropers can make an informed decision before viewing them (e.g. which series and issue will they spoil?).

Marvel is going for the youth market like Spidey/Marvel Adventures/Marvel Action with a
high school spider man in Spider Man Homeroom Heroes and series based on Spidey and His Amazing Friends

The Spectacular Spider-Men #3: All of the "Meanwhile..." segments have been confirmed to be Arcade behind them using his technology, but he's working together with Mentallo. We see Peter and Miles having "ideal" lives where the former is married to Gwen Stacy and has kids, while the latter is starting to date Kamala. Although we don't see them being controlled until the very ending, when they re-investigate the villains and find their lair in the sewers.
Latest blog update (November 5th, 2022).Bomb Squad Comics released their third issue
of Spider-Man '94 in April, it's more or less a Fully Absorbed Finale for Spider-Man Unlimited

I’d be interested to see how that turned out.
IIRC, one of her main complaints about Spectacular was how the female characters were treated, and if that’s the case I dunno how well she’s going to like the 90’s.
I love the Spidey franchise, but it’s historically not been the best franchise where women are concerned. Spectacular probably has some of the best writing for the female cast of anything before Spider-Gwen was introduced, and if she didn’t like that I dunno about 90’s Spidey’s chances.
IIRC, the primary female characters are Mary Jane, who basically never stops being written like a prize for Peter, and Felicia Hardy who is basically awful until they drastically rewrite her character a season or so into the series. The most proactive woman in the cast is Black Cat, but that’s Felicia and, again, it doesn’t happen until well into the series.
Also if she didn’t like nerdy Peter, that show is right out the gate with Peter being a scientist.
Tbh, she might really like the Ultimate Spider-Man show, since that both minimizes the scientist stuff and has proactive girls in the cast (White Tiger) right out the gate.

Well that, and she finds Spectacular Spider-Man Peter to be cringe.
It's the ultimate heresy in the Spider-Man fandom I know, but I have this gut feeling maybe Christopher Barnes Spidey is more to her vibe.
"The Black Rage makes us strong, because we must resist its temptations every day of our lives or be forever damned!"That’s another thing, perhaps. It doesn’t sound like she empathizes much with Peter as a character (and Peter doesn’t really change much between most shows), so a show like Ultimate where he shares prominence with a bunch of other characters might be more amenable to her.
IIRC 90’s Peter is still kind that same kind of irascible nerd who’s a self righteous dick sometimes.

From what she told me way back, she does empathize with him needing to pay the bills and support his elderly aunt, but that plot point doesn't get focused compared to the other things like Peter trying to get in with Liz in a romance my guest finds quite painful to watch.
There was also a discussion we had about if Peter should have told Gwen and Harry that he's Spider-Man, she argued in favor of it, since Miles told Ganke in the video game and the movie. She just finds it weird Peter has no one to confide to about his super hero stuff while Miles has a whole support spider group in the animated movies.
Kids these days, don't appreciate the secret identity.
"The Black Rage makes us strong, because we must resist its temptations every day of our lives or be forever damned!"
The lead-in to One More Day shows why heroes keeping their identity secret is a really good idea.
(See also Batman where anyone who learned his secret died
a lot
.)
It is a good idea, but a hero does need at least a Secret-Keeper, to at least have people to talk to or help them in their mundane lives.
Wake me up at your own risk.I mean confide in with loved ones. Like, she's confused on why Aunt May doesn't know her nephew is Spider-Man because the guest was introduced to Spider-verse Aunt May who is like Alfred and supported her Peter's career before he died.
Plus Peter in the PS games lets Mary Jane know.
So her reacting to the classic Peter who has no one who knows that he's Spider-Man is something of a culture shock.
Damn, I'm feeling out of touch with the new Spider-Man fans. ![]()
Yeah, Peter didn't really have that until he met Hobie Brown.
There's a What If where Gwen lived and she and Peter were gonna marry, but Norman leaked his identity to the press and Aunt May collapsed
◊ from the shock, just like he always feared would happen.

The Protomen enhanced my life. The MCU did a lot to demolish the secret identity in thed mainstream.
But then again this is the era where you are supposed to share your name and face with everyone across the world with social media. The current generation seems to have drifted apart from 'Your issues are yours only' as a concept, where we are expected to share everything with everyone and if we have something to hide it obviously is something reprehensible or we'd be talking about it.
And to be fair "bottle everything up and don't share it with anyone'' is an unhealthy thing to do.
Aunt May apparently having to drop near dead if ever confronted with Peter's issues was always an annoying Diabolus Ex Machina of sorts to justify having the character stuck in that rut, to be honest.

Please remember that, ultimately, fictional works of entertainment are just that.Funny thing is the MCU then built it back up, at least in Peter's case—the third movie was about him trying to reinstate it after everyone knowing it at the end of the second movie wrecked his life, and getting what he wanted at a price.

The Protomen enhanced my life.Part of her arguments about why Spectacular Pete should confide in with Gwen and Harry is that he can actually share the burden of being Spider-Man with his friends. Ganke is like really good support for Miles, and so is Hailey who my guest actually likes with Miles.
I told her that being an isolated NERD who has to hide who he really is is part of Spider-Man's appeal and then she countered by calling me an old man, saying that's so lame, and then kicking me in the shin.
Lousy kids questioning the wisdom of her elders and traditions!
EDIT: OH SHIT, I just realized she is GOING TO HATE THAT PLOT POINT IN THE SPECTACULAR LIZARD EPISODE.
OH MY GOD.

As a course correction it seems to have gone too far in the other direction, but one cannot really judge until we see how the next movie handles it.
She has kind of a good point in that opening up to others and relying on them going past that "I have to carry the whole world on my shoulders" martyr complex is actual character development and the logically sane thing to do.
Batman of all people actually probably has the sanest approach to it of all superheroes. He keeps his identity a secret from the public but he also keeps a sizable family around himself who know and they act as a mutual support group. That he often mishandles that family is a different issue but the basis is sane.

I think part of it's Once Original, Now Common, too—superheroes having realistic (as real as they can be anyway) problems like deep interpersonal relationships, the hero identity making friends angry with you for blowing them off, money, etc. were new for heroes as a whole back then, and especially a teenager like Peter who started with no income.
Edited by lalalei2001 on May 23rd 2024 at 3:03:54 PM
The Protomen enhanced my life.
And today a teenager is not supposed to earn income no matter what, at least not in a 'I must support my whole household' way, and at least not in the 'First World'. So for a modern child Peter as the breadwinner for his household before he's even of an age to drink must feel weird.
For the 40th anniversary of the black suit, Spidey is getting an anthology
about when he wore suit called Spider-Man: Black Suit & Blood as part of the Black, White & Blood anthologies imprint

The entire run will be revealed to be a result of Peter eating gas station sushi...having dreamed the entire thing.
