This thread's for the Spider-Man comics and spin-offs, whether they're decades old or brand new.
- Apart from the main Marvel Universe titles, Ultimate Spider-Man, Spider-Man "What If?" stories, crossovers, guest appearances in other books, Alternate Universe tales and things like Marvel's manga adaptations are all on-topic here.
- Spider-Man 'family' books are on-topic (as are their own crossovers, guest appearances etc.) - e.g. Spider-Man 2099, Miles Morales, Spider-Woman, Silk, Spider-Gwen, Venom, Carnage, Black Cat, Red Goblin and Spider-Verse.
- Characters and comics that originated in Spider-Man but are no longer directly connected to the spider-franchise (e.g. Punisher, Silver Sable) are not on-topic, unless you're discussing historical connections and crossovers. If in doubt, check before you write a long post. If this isn't the right place, there's a more general Marvel Comics thread
which covers them.
Technically, Marvel's Infinity Comics (and their predecessors, Infinite Comics) are webcomics, not comic books, but it's fine to talk about their Spider-Man stories here.
Discussions that are only about Spider-Man adaptations in other media (films, video games etc.) are off-topic, but discussing the differences between the adaptations and the original comics is fine - as long as spoilers for the adaptations are tagged.
Please follow the spoiler policy rules
- tag spoilers for the latest issues, for any previews or content leaks, and for off-topic comics. When including spoiler tags, try to write so that tropers can make an informed decision before viewing them (e.g. which series and issue will they spoil?).

It may be concerning she wants Peter to continue to get bullied, but I have my own issue with my hatred of Milhouse from the Simpsons. Man I hate that kid. Always screwing things up and selling out Bart and being a general weaseley kid. But still bullying is a big issue and no one deserves it.
But she makes valid points. The role of an outcast or someone different in society has shifted from just being a nerd who likes science. As Spectacular is a very silver-age based show it’s going to lean into all the stuff that was prevalent in the 60s, like jerk bullies or science nerds or nerd getting the girl revenge of the nerds style. Society has changed a lot since the. Though so those things can seem weird and outdated.

It's gonna be fun on the bun!
On your first point, I think it's because she actually sees this version of Spider-Man as unlikable and very smug.
In episode 2, Spider-Man kind of fucks up and torments Electro into being a worse villain because of his jokes and banter, when all Electro was trying to do was flee and not intentionally hurting anyone and we see this from Electro's POV. Max was just some regular dude, got caught up in a science experiment, and really wants to get back to living a normal life since he can't touch or even live outside of a specific containment suit.
And then Spider-Man mistakes him just trying to get a coffee as supervillain business and attacks him with the usual banter.
So we see how villains see Spider-Man in this part. And she ended up sympathizing with ELECTRO, since she got reminded of COVID isolation.
Man, there is a weird generational thing going on.
Yeah on that point that’s 100% correct, and Spider-Mans completely in the wrong there.
But that’s fits with his original personality, and Peter Parker was an abrasive jerk who took out his own bullying on his villains. Man the circle of abuse sucks.

Well the thing is, I did bring up how Spider-Man felt guilty and tried to talk down Max, but then in true super hero fashion, the whole thing had to end with Spider-Man beating him up after Electro's mental state got worse, and uhhhh yeah.
Maybe Electro is just better off as stupid crook with electric powers.
She doesn't even know that exists, but Miles is in it, and she actually likes Miles. She became a Spider-Man fan because of into the spider-verse.
Granted, what's he like in that show?

"The Black Rage makes us strong, because we must resist its temptations every day of our lives or be forever damned!"I'm hoping if you continue, Peter will do more to improve himself in her eyes....but there's the entire situation with Liz and Gwen and how he handles it.
I think it's a lost cause getting her to like Peter. At least she's a fan of Miles.

One Strip! One Strip!Weirdly, the part she likes the most is Harry's and Norman's dynamic with each other.
I think she'll end up sympathizing with Harry more than Peter. Remember, Harry gets into the sports team, struggles with doing steroids I MEAN Goblin formula, has a bad relationship with his dad, struggles to make friends, and is dumber than Peter.
That last part will make him more relatable to her.
I just KNOW if she continues, she'll hate the part where Peter and Gwen decide to get together DURING THE PART WHEN HARRY TELLS THEM HE WAS KIDNAPPED AND IS AFRAID OF THE GREEN GOBLIN.
Like, that is the WORST possible time to have your little relationship drama.
Yeah, the parts where Peter treats Liz and Gwen, particularly the former, quite badly have NOT aged well and I think we could have a discussion on how Editorial treats Spider-Man's love interests in general.
It's not a good look.

"The Black Rage makes us strong, because we must resist its temptations every day of our lives or be forever damned!"Putting this in a new post instead of editing my above post:
Oh wow. Now I'm remembering all the ways Spectacular Spider-Man screws up.
There's the thing with Electro. There's also how he handles both the situation with the Lizard and Eddie. There's his behaviour while possessed by the symbiotic.
There's Liz's cousin...stepbrother....Molten Man, which is a situation entirely similar to Electro.
There's the entire thing with Black Cat and her dad.
And if something as simple as a science lecture was enough to get her to dislike him even more, then all this stuff is only going to further turn her against him.
Yikes. Just show her more stuff with Miles.
And keep her away from current comic book Pete.
One Strip! One Strip!Yeah, it's looking more and more like Miles is the one who appeals to the younger generation, not Peter Parker.
She actually DOES like "depressed dad bod Pete" from ITSV tho. Finds him FAR more likeable than Spectacular Peter.
Hmmmmmm....seriously, I think adult dad Peter is far more healthy for Peter's brand than stagnant manchild who can't hold a job and keeps a rotating cast of women to date.
Miles is now the young person's Spider-Man.
I have SO many mixed feelings.
I mean, I've said that one of the sad things about losing Spectacular is that they lost the window for the appeal of the character.
Miles basically fills the niche of a hip young Spider-Man dealing with Teenage problems that Spectacular Peter was going for, so Marvel's continued insistence on making Peter that character was pointless. They missed their chance to tell that story, and kept trying to do so anyway, with versions that were decidedly worse.
That this girl is finding other reasons to dislike Spectacular Pete (that are pretty valid) shows just how out of touch it is. It's sad, and it hurts, and it's hella weird for what's supposed to be one of the best Spider-Man shows around, but it's a reminder that times have changed...a lot.
One Strip! One Strip!Well she's a very different person than guys like you and me. Key word being guys. Spectacular's primary audience are American boys from 12-17, the types who can relate to Peter and project to getting all the hot girls while dealing with issues.
But that kind of appeal doesn't really work on a 14 year old girl into sports and artistic pursuits. In fact, treating girls as first and foremost as love interests with no insight into what they do outside of the main guy's life is offensive to her.
Into the Spider-Verse's Gwen has a life outside of Miles, she's got her struggles with her dad, losing her version of Peter, ETC. Liz Allen's character stuff comes later, but here she kinda exists to be snobby cheerleader that Peter wins over with his geekiness and proving he's a better guy than jock man.
Spectacular has more to it as it goes, but like, it hasn't aged well compared to stuff like Into the Spider-Verse or PS 4 Miles Morales. That's the new hotness among Spider-Man fans.
It's why ITSV was smart to go with the theme that ANYONE can be a Spider-person not just a regular white guy from New York.
That's the appeal of the various Spider-People.
"The Black Rage makes us strong, because we must resist its temptations every day of our lives or be forever damned!"I don't think those things are necessarily things that didn't age well, Spectacular Peter is supposed to be in many ways flawed and his screwup with his relationships, work-life balance and treatment of villains are part of the drama that can make it so compelling.
Different strokes for different folks and all that, but it does show that the differences that make a well written Pete and Miles appealing to different people are more then just skin deep.
I wouldn't count this as a screw up. Leaving aside the fact that Peter had very good reason to see Walter locked up, the man himself chose to remain in prison because he hated himself for what he did to Ben. Felicia being mad at him is just Moral Myopia.
Doesn't the Venom Symbiote literally consider Peter it's absolute worst host?
Like, thousands of years in the future, it rates them with Eddie getting the highest points, everyone else being middle grade, and Peter being the only one at zero?
Of course, it comes off as being a little bitter about the rejection more than anything, but still.
I'm curious as to what would even lead to Peter wearing the Venom Symbiote again in the first place.
Edit: ![]()
This is true, but will this girl see it that way?
When you're already kinda disliking someone, it's easy to add on to that list, though from how Red describes her, her reasons for disliking Peter seem very well thought out.
Edited by HandsomeRob on May 16th 2024 at 2:09:08 AM
One Strip! One Strip!Venom currently doesn’t have a host and is in a massive depressed state after Dylan found out about all the murders and other terrible things it’s committed over the years, with how it abandoned Angelo mid-swing to fall to his death being specifically brought up.
Also the fact that Dylan was killed by Carnage briefly. Doesn’t help, as Venom blames himself and doesn’t know Dylan was resurrected.
So Venom’s currently contemplating on his old hosts, having just paid Lee Price’s grave a visit, so it makes sense at his lowest point he’d go back to his ex.

Flash probably deserves more love for putting the work into giving the symbiote the character development to actually become a more truly heroic character 🤣
It probably helps that Flash treats the relationship as purely as platonic rather then the more romantic or jilted lover mess that Eddie and Pete do
Hollywood Reporter is saying Amazon isn’t picking up the Silk series. They’re gonna look for other buyers.

Venom rated Tel-Kar as a more suitable host than Peter. I really think he's letting his personal feelings cloud his judgement.
But yeah Venom being tsundere over Peter is one of his longest running characterizations. Nowadays he can't decide if Eddie or Flash is his one true host, but he's still always up for another run with Peter.
As for how they feel towards each other right now, currently they are on good terms. Peter is still iffy on symbiotes in general (which if anything is more about his own relationship and attachment issues), but they both buried the hatchet around the time when Peter needed Venom's help to take on Red Goblin. After that they settled into a begrudging friendship when Venom needed Peter's help during the Absolute Carnage run.
What I'm getting at is Carnage is great at bringing these 2 together.

Like, when I show the kids I look after, any kind of media, I always try to start a conversation to train their media literacy skills, stuff like explaining why they hate things is always fun.
There was this mini rant from her about how Miles having an expressive artistic side and being from Brooklyn didn't make him an asshole to science nerds during ITSV, it just showed him struggling and being overworked, she really feels that.
But with Peter in the second episode, she legit feels like she's being talked down to since Science isn't her strong suit, and it feels like people who like sports are being mocked as irrational bullies or if they are cute girls, just need to be converted into loving the shy quiet nerd which she feels very annoyed with the message she's getting.
Weirdly, I think if she does continue this show, Harry might end up being her favorite character.
But man, talks like this makes you question the media you actually enjoy. Damn the liberal nonsense the woke media is feeding kids!
