Spider-Man General Discussion

Go To

This thread's for the Spider-Man comics and spin-offs, whether they're decades old or brand new.

  • Apart from the main Marvel Universe titles, Ultimate Spider-Man, Spider-Man "What If?" stories, crossovers, guest appearances in other books, Alternate Universe tales and things like Marvel's manga adaptations are all on-topic here.
  • Spider-Man 'family' books are on-topic (as are their own crossovers, guest appearances etc.) - e.g. Spider-Man 2099, Miles Morales, Spider-Woman, Silk, Spider-Gwen, Venom, Carnage, Black Cat, Red Goblin and Spider-Verse.
  • Characters and comics that originated in Spider-Man but are no longer directly connected to the spider-franchise (e.g. Punisher, Silver Sable) are not on-topic, unless you're discussing historical connections and crossovers. If in doubt, check before you write a long post. If this isn't the right place, there's a more general Marvel Comics thread which covers them.

Technically, Marvel's Infinity Comics (and their predecessors, Infinite Comics) are webcomics, not comic books, but it's fine to talk about their Spider-Man stories here.

Discussions that are only about Spider-Man adaptations in other media (films, video games etc.) are off-topic, but discussing the differences between the adaptations and the original comics is fine - as long as spoilers for the adaptations are tagged.

Please follow the spoiler policy rules - tag spoilers for the latest issues, for any previews or content leaks, and for off-topic comics. When including spoiler tags, try to write so that tropers can make an informed decision before viewing them (e.g. which series and issue will they spoil?).

     Original Thread OP
Since everyone likes talking about him. I know little about him(Ironically,I got nearly all I know about him from a Batman thread),but he's apparently important so I made this thread. Enjoy.

[up] Hmmm, hard to say if Screwball would go for it or not, actually.

Classic Norman Osborn would be all about it, being a rich douchebag who constantly complains about his kid not being enough of a man. Otto? Kinda depends on whether they stroke his ego, really. They're idiots with no understanding of science, but he's more than vain enough to appreciate anyone who praises him. Vulture, for sure. Kingpin would see them useful idiots, but as idiots nonetheless.

I don't know how much most of the regular rogues care about politics in general. They mostly seem to be more focused on their next scores. Like, I don't think Shocker has strong feelings on economic or social issues. It's not like he can even vote, as a convicted felon.

I feel like Screwball could go either way, honestly. I guess it kinda depends on whether she takes a "live and let live until I kill you for clicks" attitude.

[up]You would be right. Spider-Man doesn't have a politically motivated rogues gallery for the most part. It's not like X-Men or Captain America, most of Spidey's enemies are out for personal gain, vengeance, power, or money. Politics has just never been much of a theme for Spider-Man comics.

Funnily enough, Electro DID pull that stunt where he railed against the DB(Daily Bugle's name when it got bought out by Dexter Benett) and claimed to be a man standing for the people.

There was some controversy over Jameson being mayor and using his powers to give a government bailout to the failing DB, and that pissed off a lot of New Yorkers.

Electro even admits that he doesn't actually care much for what he's shouting, he just wanted to blackmail Dexter Benett and get some of that money for himself, as well as a power up since Electro tricked all sorts of people into plugging off their devices (Or was it the other way around.) which boosted Electro for some reason.

That story is probably my favorite use of Electro in recent years and I'm annoyed writers having kept using that "populist con artist" gimmick for him. It gave him a much more unique gimmick and personality, especially given that Spider-Man so rarely does get into those kind of themes.

The idea behind the "turning things off give Electro power" thing is that the less energy the city is using, the more Electro is free to sap from the city's power grid since it's not going elsewhere. Hence the big climax of that arc where Electro tells the public they can help him kill a "deserving" person by just turning off their power so he has more to use for himself, and that nobody will ever know they were involved.

Yeah, I guess Electro being a huckster who just shouts whatever the hell appeals the most to the current mood of asshole Marvel civilians is political in its own way.

But as for villains who would explicitly take up alt right causes……uhhhh yeah I can’t think of any.

Even Marvel dropped the white supremacist Green Goblin gangs and tattoo concept. He even invaded Asgard.

No, I don’t remember why the Green Goblin tattoo was a white supremacist symbol back in BND.

2099 and F4 costumes are always wins, but nothing beats red and blue.

Meanwhile ASM#46 just keeps fumbling because the Sinister 6 have never been fixated on reforming, Ben is still a loose end, and Wells hardly makes it a secret that he hates girls because good grief, Michele is f*cking insufferable.

Just saying, I don't think anyone would bat an eye if it turns out she's a homunculus made by Mephisto explicitly made to f*ck with Peter's self-esteem.

[up][up][up]Mayday being the one who helps Peter design the classic costume is so sweet.

[up][up]Literally why would the Sinister Six even want Sandman back? He's in one of his reforming periods I guess. And it's not like they haven't replaced members before; they've never been an especially close or sentimental team, and in fact, turn on each other with even greater frequency than many other supervillain teams. It really is stunning just how much Wells does not get any of the Spider-Man characters. Nobody is in-character in this run, they're all acting like entirely different people. If an issue suddenly revealed this entire run has been some kind of "Truman Show" Plot and Peter has actually been walking around a fake New York talking to actors imitating his friends and enemies, I'd totally believe it.

[up]I really wouldn't be surprised if they do that. Just a Community-style "those were the gas leak years" hand wave.

Hey.

So.

How often do comics get fifth printings?

Because USM #1 is getting a fifth printing.

Ummmmm...this feels like history in the making. Does it feel like that to you guys or am I being wacky?

There's been some other examples, like Star Wars the High Republic #1 and Man of Steel #18, but it's certainly uncommon.

If they can keep up this momentum it'll be great!

[up]Yet another instance of Bailey being surprisingly great. I'm also loving how he seems to get all the dumb mega-loser Silver Age-style gimmick villains; it's a cute little idea, that he basically has to "warm up" with harmless z-list dorks since he's still just a kid and will move up to actually dangerous villains as he gets older.

Alright, so in that case, I guess we're just better off not discussing the Wells run for a long time.

So I just realized, Harry and Gwen have "hating Spider-Man because they blame him for killing their dad."

And those two are married in the new Ultimate universe. And HARRY is quite possibly, the Green Goblin. Or maybe Solicits revealed that, I can't remember.

This has interesting implications for Ultimate Gwen.

Well that's certainly a possibility that came to me looking at the panels again.

As I stated, one of the reasons why Green Goblin endures as Spider-Man's arch enemy is because he lives a double life and parallels Peter's life in certain regards.

So Harry having a supportive wife that knows about his crusade against crime, would make quite a dark parallel to Peter's and MJ's usual dynamic.

That reminds me of some of the early stories they did with Kingpin, but Vanessa wasn't as big on the whole crime thing.
