Spider-Man General Discussion

Go To

This thread's for the Spider-Man comics and spin-offs, whether they're decades old or brand new.

  • Apart from the main Marvel Universe titles, Ultimate Spider-Man, Spider-Man "What If?" stories, crossovers, guest appearances in other books, Alternate Universe tales and things like Marvel's manga adaptations are all on-topic here.
  • Spider-Man 'family' books are on-topic (as are their own crossovers, guest appearances etc.) - e.g. Spider-Man 2099, Miles Morales, Spider-Woman, Silk, Spider-Gwen, Venom, Carnage, Black Cat, Red Goblin and Spider-Verse.
  • Characters and comics that originated in Spider-Man but are no longer directly connected to the spider-franchise (e.g. Punisher, Silver Sable) are not on-topic, unless you're discussing historical connections and crossovers. If in doubt, check before you write a long post. If this isn't the right place, there's a more general Marvel Comics thread which covers them.

Technically, Marvel's Infinity Comics (and their predecessors, Infinite Comics) are webcomics, not comic books, but it's fine to talk about their Spider-Man stories here.

Discussions that are only about Spider-Man adaptations in other media (films, video games etc.) are off-topic, but discussing the differences between the adaptations and the original comics is fine - as long as spoilers for the adaptations are tagged.

Please follow the spoiler policy rules - tag spoilers for the latest issues, for any previews or content leaks, and for off-topic comics. When including spoiler tags, try to write so that tropers can make an informed decision before viewing them (e.g. which series and issue will they spoil?).

     Original Thread OP
Since everyone likes talking about him. I know little about him(Ironically,I got nearly all I know about him from a Batman thread),but he's apparently important so I made this thread. Enjoy.

Norman: It's like a Goblin bargain sale. I really have to get rid of Kingsley's knock of brands.

Wonder if we have or are approaching the point where it might be better off killing the old Ben off and creating a new Ben?

[up] Isn't that what Ben's been since Clone Conspiracy? A copy of the original deceased Ben?

No, like Warren made it a point that his process revived the Ben we all know rather than just merely cloning him.

That's why it drove Ben crazy since he remembered all his deaths.

Yeah, that's pretty much why Ben became the Jackal.

So who else feels Miles Warren was only ever a decent villain in Clone Saga?

Grave Goblin is Rek Rap's version of Green Goblin.

[up][up] His 'Mark Hamill Joker' phase in the 90s Clone Saga is my favourite version, weird how they haven't gone back to that outside of the 2009 redux.

Does Paul even relevant at this point? It looks like even Wells don't know what to do with the character anymore.

Norman has officially become like the Joker in that an incredibly awesome cast of villains gets ignored for Goblin variants.

Bruh, we haven’t had Green Goblin in about 4-5 years while there have been tons of original villains in between.

Hell, there was a Sinister Six storyline in the Wells run.

And there’s an ongoing Superior Spider Man series starring Doc Ock.

I’d argue Doc Ock is more overexposed these days.

Doc Ock continually gets Worfed to make Norman look good.

Well yeah, but the point is Doc Ock is more prominent nowadays than Norman, and appears more.

Like, no offense meant, but I don’t see you complaining that the Doc Ock superior four storyline takes away attention from all the other villains. And you didn’t bring up how Doc Ock tortured Norman in the Wells run.

We haven’t had a Green Goblin storyline in so long, and the only stories Norman gets are limited run Gold Goblin, while Doc Ock still gets shilled in Superior which is going strong.

So Doc Ock is closer to Joker in being overexposed and shilled. Who is the character that Dan Slott keeps pushing? Doc Ock. Who still leads the Sinister Six? Doc Ock.

Who gets a lot of screen time in the video games? Doc Ock again.

You're right.

I just feel like Norman is being a successful villain because the books are supposed to make me take him being Peter's bestie and a Karma Houdini seriously.

When instead it feels like he's gotten away with everything.

Yeah, it’s totally fine to not like Green Goblin and to dislike him being used.

But I don’t think it’s fair to say he’s overexposed when he hasn’t done much as the Green Goblin in years and is just a shell of his former self because of a magic shot gun.

As a Green Goblin fan, I’m annoyed that writers keep giving him stupid magic plots that keep giving him shitty status quos, like magic the gathering of five, and the sin shot gun.

…..Which is oddly like Spider-Man now that I think about it.

I did kinda like Norman in his mini gaslighting himself that he's not evil anymore he had his sins removed he can't be evil, as he keeps doing bad things.

As dumb as removing sins literally removes the evil out of someone and those sins can be put into others is, I kinda hope its revealed Norman never actually absorbed the sins when he relapses, and it was him all along, not the goblin, not the sins of his past, but Norman Osborn who is just evil no matter what or how hard he tries to convince others and himself

I honestly think that the demon idea could've been done well if it had some reworking done to it, and I'd like to see a continuity that goes with it instead of the classic origin.

I dunno, the Green Goblin doesn't work without Norman Osborn and vice versa.

One of the things that makes Green Goblin stand out amongst the rest of the rogues and propels him to Spider-Man's numero uno villain is that he also deals with a double life.

He's a man given great power, and decides to get even more power at the cost of his own family. Peter is a genuine science major, while Norman is a crooked businessman and part-time scientist, how these two characters work as foils is a major reason why Green Goblin is my favorite Spider-Man villain. You just can't get that same level of uniqueness with Doc Ock or Venom.

The original story just feels like monster of the week material. When you read issue 14, it stands out because the Green Goblin is set up as a recurring threat with a mystery to him, and Spider-Man fails to catch him at the end of the issue. Writing like that is why the Green Goblin endures as Spider-Man's arch enemy despite attempts to replace him with other villains or shove him in different status quos.
