This thread's for the Spider-Man comics and spin-offs, whether they're decades old or brand new.
- Apart from the main Marvel Universe titles, Ultimate Spider-Man, Spider-Man "What If?" stories, crossovers, guest appearances in other books, Alternate Universe tales and things like Marvel's manga adaptations are all on-topic here.
- Spider-Man 'family' books are on-topic (as are their own crossovers, guest appearances etc.) - e.g. Spider-Man 2099, Miles Morales, Spider-Woman, Silk, Spider-Gwen, Venom, Carnage, Black Cat, Red Goblin and Spider-Verse.
- Characters and comics that originated in Spider-Man but are no longer directly connected to the spider-franchise (e.g. Punisher, Silver Sable) are not on-topic, unless you're discussing historical connections and crossovers. If in doubt, check before you write a long post. If this isn't the right place, there's a more general Marvel Comics thread
which covers them.
Technically, Marvel's Infinity Comics (and their predecessors, Infinite Comics) are webcomics, not comic books, but it's fine to talk about their Spider-Man stories here.
Discussions that are only about Spider-Man adaptations in other media (films, video games etc.) are off-topic, but discussing the differences between the adaptations and the original comics is fine - as long as spoilers for the adaptations are tagged.
Please follow the spoiler policy rules
- tag spoilers for the latest issues, for any previews or content leaks, and for off-topic comics. When including spoiler tags, try to write so that tropers can make an informed decision before viewing them (e.g. which series and issue will they spoil?).

The Registration issue basically is one of those things that shows you how you view a subject's allegory.
Is Registering a mutant like registering a gun or registering someone as trans?
Because in the Marvel universe, it's sold to the public as the former but it's really the latter because the government is full of bad actors who want to murder children. And we live in a time where, yes, that is not a joking fear a the government of the US is full of bad actors who want to murder children.
It's sort of like Batman: No Man's Land where the criticism of the comic was the US government would never abandon a major US city to disaster due to incompetence and prejudice against the primarily impoverished citizens.
And then Katrina happened...
Author of The Rules of Supervillainy, Cthulhu Armageddon, and United States of Monsters. It depends on the Empire, one of the interesting stories I read was DUCHY OF TERRA by Glynn Stewart where the human collaborators are with a progressive socialist The Federation and La Résistance is made of bigots and nationalists.
Which means allegory needs to be well defined.

Too true.
But I think Devin has the edge if only because he's been editing the recent Spider-Books that aren't ASM and those have been remarkably well received.
Heck, even in Devin's non-Spider books where he's essentially a guest star (*eyes Chip Zdarsky's Daredevil run*), Spidey consistently a GOAT. Like, can anyone imagine Wells' Spidey trying to do the lecture he gave Daredevil in issue #5 of Zdarsky's run? Because I sure can't.
Mind you, a lot of this is still up in the air, so I especially need to not get ahead of myself, but I can't stop chasing this feeling that change is coming.
(Incidentally, who'd be great for making Spidey amazing again? Chip Zdarsky or Donny Cates?)
The preview for Giant-Size Spider-Gwen is out
.
Seems like MJ is keeping her symbiote powers that she regained in Spider-Gwen Smash.
I actually wonder if Marvel is kicking themselves for making Spider-Gwen an Alternate Universe character instead of using it as a way to revive Old School Gwen, considering how often they try to bring her to the main universe.
Cause it's clear they want her there, but don't want Old Gwen back (they've had chances to do it) but also can't; separate her from her universe, because that's what people find the most interesting about her, etc, etc.
And she was introduced after Secret Wars (2015), where they ported Miles over too, so they couldn't use that as an excuse (plus the Ultimate Universe was kinda a trash fire by then, so Mile actually moved up in the world).
So now they have this popular character that they can't use with their other popular characters because her popularity is based off being her own thing.

I think it's only happened 3 times in the entire history of Spiderman? First time in the Ultimate Spiderman cartoon to make her Carnage/Spiderwoman, then a brief stint as "a" Carnage during King in Black (and now), and in the Insomniac game where they made her Scream.
I like it though. It's a nice twist on her 616 characterization of hating anything to do with symbiotes ever since Venom traumatized her (probably could've used better wording but you get the point).

Honestly Gwen on her own is not that interesting.
The appeal of the character lies in the perspective flip of someone else being Spider-Man instead of Peter which later on morphed into her own unique world.
Had Gwen been brought in to 616 she would just be another regular spider-person.
The Renew Your Vows comic also gave her a symbiote suit for an arc.

"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."I've made my opinion on Gwen in the 616 universe clear. She has the potential to be like Miles and just needs to establish her full cast here. The other Spider-Women suffer because they don't ever get their own people.
They dismantled Arana's.
Author of The Rules of Supervillainy, Cthulhu Armageddon, and United States of Monsters. This is true. I say Marvel missed their chance, but when you think about it, there never really was a chance to try, because everything interesting about Ghost-Spider-Woman-Gwen comes from her being from a different universe.
Had she been imagined as somehow being from the 616, she'd have probably been lost in the shuffle, but in this manner, she can be something unique.
One Strip! One Strip!

After 8 years, Devin Lewis is retiring as editor for the Venom books.
He's teasing that he's moving on to a new book, but doesn't say what, apart from gushing that the comics he's been reading to prepare for it have been very good.
However, keep in mind that he's been editing the spin-off books stemming from Wells' ASM run, like Red Goblin, Gold Goblin, MJ/BC, plus he's been editing Daredevil, where Spidey has been really good.
...Dare I suggest Devin Lewis will take over as ASM editor?
