Spider-Man General Discussion

Go To

This thread's for the Spider-Man comics and spin-offs, whether they're decades old or brand new.

  • Apart from the main Marvel Universe titles, Ultimate Spider-Man, Spider-Man "What If?" stories, crossovers, guest appearances in other books, Alternate Universe tales and things like Marvel's manga adaptations are all on-topic here.
  • Spider-Man 'family' books are on-topic (as are their own crossovers, guest appearances etc.) - e.g. Spider-Man 2099, Miles Morales, Spider-Woman, Silk, Spider-Gwen, Venom, Carnage, Black Cat, Red Goblin and Spider-Verse.
  • Characters and comics that originated in Spider-Man but are no longer directly connected to the spider-franchise (e.g. Punisher, Silver Sable) are not on-topic, unless you're discussing historical connections and crossovers. If in doubt, check before you write a long post. If this isn't the right place, there's a more general Marvel Comics thread which covers them.

Technically, Marvel's Infinity Comics (and their predecessors, Infinite Comics) are webcomics, not comic books, but it's fine to talk about their Spider-Man stories here.

Discussions that are only about Spider-Man adaptations in other media (films, video games etc.) are off-topic, but discussing the differences between the adaptations and the original comics is fine - as long as spoilers for the adaptations are tagged.

Please follow the spoiler policy rules - tag spoilers for the latest issues, for any previews or content leaks, and for off-topic comics. When including spoiler tags, try to write so that tropers can make an informed decision before viewing them (e.g. which series and issue will they spoil?).

     Original Thread OP
Since everyone likes talking about him. I know little about him(Ironically,I got nearly all I know about him from a Batman thread),but he's apparently important so I made this thread. Enjoy.

I'm wary of accusing writers of basing their work on their personal lives without tangible proof. Especially since editorial would have likely made the decision to end the relationship, regardless of who was writing.

[up] Editorial encouraged Spencer to use Peter and MJ for his run when he wasn't sure it'd be allowed. If a writer wants them together, they'll permit it. This isn't the Quesada/Alonzo era anymore. The only reason they're not together right now is because that's what Zeb wanted.

While he reckons they'll be together again one day, he wouldn't be the one to tell that story, he said on those podcasts he desired a controversial run as a challenge

Spencer has confirmed he wanted to reverse One More Day but was told no. So editorial is still restricting writers to a degree.

They don't want the marriage back, they are fine with Peter and MJ dating if that's what the writer wants.

Yeah, Zeb Wells breaking up Peter and MJ is a direction he wants. Paul as well.

I'm pretty sure Wells has said from the start breaking them up was his choice?

I think that they should reverse One More Day and stay separated.

Then we can move on.

Well we have Ultimate Spider-Man for married Spider-Man at least.

[up][up] And if someone wanted to write Peter and MJ together again? What would you do then?

Can you just get off this kick of "Peter and MJ should stay apart?", nobody wants it and no other love interest will ever measure up. They're the Lois and Clark of Marvel and get along well in every other universe Marvel promotes with them, thus making the 616 versions look rather pathetic in comparison when they can't make it work. They cease being the versions people want to invest in because they're failures at whatever it is they do. Spencer aside, readers had a decade of separation and tension between the two and it didn't work, what's the point in asking for more of it?

Brevoort's of the opinion Peter and MJ would just stay together if OMD was reversed. Because he even knows the cause for that would be Peter and MJ being in actual bloody character.

JMS' handling of a separation that didn't involve devil magic ended with the two agreeing they needed each other and resolving it in a matter of a few years.

Slott also wrote a story in 2022 where they've grown old together in the future, so...yeah, if OMD or Paul apply to that potential future, they'll find their way back to each other again. So what's the point in them permanently separating? What purpose does it serve?

People don't 'move on' from Peter and MJ, because everywhere else you look, from newspapers, to RYV, to Ultimate, Peter and MJ ARE FINE!

The obsession Spider-Editorial has with trying to keep Peter and MJ apart or at least not married is like a guy trying to stop the sun from going down. It's never going to work because Peter and MJ as husband and wife is too cemented into the public consciousness of what Spider-Man is, since they were married or on the verge of being married during some of the series' greatest periods and numerous adaptations build to them getting married.

I gotta admit, I'm slightly impressed Spider-Editorial and Zeb Wells are still committed to their dumbass direction and keeping Paul around with MJ after so long.

And if someone wanted to write Peter and MJ together again? What would you do then?

I mean, by that logic, what happens if I'd married Peter and Black Cat?

×6 Wells' run has been a mess...but Brevoort isn't one to judge. His manifesto is the reason something like the Wells run could even happen in the first place. Lowe is loyally following the terrible characterization and dead end relationship stories Brevoort insisted was absolutely necessary for "the longterm health of the franchise".

[up]5x, you can marry off Peter to Cissy Underwood and it still wouldn't matter, if someone wants to write Peter and MJ again, they'll find a way to do it, if that's what they, and the fans, want, and you can't deny the latter any longer.

Besides, you had your chance with Felicia with this run and they blew it. Felicia thought of Peter as a project more than a partner and didn't want to deal with it any longer.

It's pretty wild that even people who ship Peter and Felicia got blue balled by this run.

At the very least, you could argue this run gave Felicia and Spidey fans SOMETHING. And then they break up in a pretty dumb way, and Peter is just left with Norman Osborn as his emotional support.

NOT ENOUGH

if anything, it's worse than nothing

we finally get Peter & Fel in a relationship after Fel's development - and they do nothing with it before breaking them up

Now we don't even have hope, we already got what we asked for and they RUINED IT

There is also the annoyance that many objecting to Peter/MJ claimed that the marriage is an obstacle to many good stories. But Post-OMD, anything worthwhile can be done with the marriage or you have stories that just didn't need to be done.
