Spider-Man General Discussion

Go To

This thread's for the Spider-Man comics and spin-offs, whether they're decades old or brand new.

  • Apart from the main Marvel Universe titles, Ultimate Spider-Man, Spider-Man "What If?" stories, crossovers, guest appearances in other books, Alternate Universe tales and things like Marvel's manga adaptations are all on-topic here.
  • Spider-Man 'family' books are on-topic (as are their own crossovers, guest appearances etc.) - e.g. Spider-Man 2099, Miles Morales, Spider-Woman, Silk, Spider-Gwen, Venom, Carnage, Black Cat, Red Goblin and Spider-Verse.
  • Characters and comics that originated in Spider-Man but are no longer directly connected to the spider-franchise (e.g. Punisher, Silver Sable) are not on-topic, unless you're discussing historical connections and crossovers. If in doubt, check before you write a long post. If this isn't the right place, there's a more general Marvel Comics thread which covers them.

Technically, Marvel's Infinity Comics (and their predecessors, Infinite Comics) are webcomics, not comic books, but it's fine to talk about their Spider-Man stories here.

Discussions that are only about Spider-Man adaptations in other media (films, video games etc.) are off-topic, but discussing the differences between the adaptations and the original comics is fine - as long as spoilers for the adaptations are tagged.

Please follow the spoiler policy rules - tag spoilers for the latest issues, for any previews or content leaks, and for off-topic comics. When including spoiler tags, try to write so that tropers can make an informed decision before viewing them (e.g. which series and issue will they spoil?).

     Original Thread OP
Since everyone likes talking about him. I know little about him(Ironically,I got nearly all I know about him from a Batman thread),but he's apparently important so I made this thread. Enjoy.

here is still no chemistry or a spark of romance anywhere between Paul and MJ.

Do we want that?

Also, continuity is something I'd feel happy to ignore as MJ is literally someone who has lost three children to murderous supervillains.

Believe me, they are barely addressing that fact at all. We can forget about those kids.

The writers sure did.

Maybe it will stick unlike Wanda's kids.

Which were wiped out because they didn't want a married superhero with kids versus the love triangle with Wonder Man and Vision.

It’s amazing that love triangle is viable

It gets off the ground with Wonder Man refusing to help Vision after he’s lobotomized becaise he’s decided he wants Wanda for himself

How the hell do you get past the point of “I refuse to help you in this emotionally trying time because you should date me instead” to a point where Wanda actually was with Simon instead of Vision multiple times?

Because the writers didn't understand the implications of what they were writing in favor of love triangle shenanigans?

Well, John Byrne, so.

Incredibly believable.

The start of his West Coast Avengers has been incredibly painful to read because he is blatantly less interested in characterization and plot than whacking the book with a lead pipe until it’s the shape he wants it to be.

There's a saying the John Byrne has one idea of continuity and that's his idea of continuity. And that's very true. Anytime he gets on a book, he will immediately warp it into the way it was when either he wrote it or someone he liked wrote it, with zero regard for what anyone else did with it in the meantime.

Plus the guy has a lot of dumb ideas and beliefs.

So it does influence his writing at times.

So Madame Masque Has mystical abilities, and able to use sigils that look similar to the ones used by Benjamin Rabin already I'm seeing speculation that It'll be revealed MJ and Peter are still marked and that explains their behaviour all run

[up] They were shown to have been marked with sigils since the start of Dead Language, a fact everyone glossed over insisting MJ left Peter of her own free will and yada yada despite the evidence clearly being on the page and through dialogue, I myself have been saying it for months that it was going to be Zeb's 'out' all along.

[up] That...might actually be good.

Like, Peter being completely useless and MJ sticking with Useless Paul even when she really doesn't have a reason to anymore (something something fake kids evaporating into thin air) for the entire run really can be explained by saying defeating Rabin didn't really get rid of the sigils. Heck, if we want to finally cancel Paul once and for all, we could reveal that Paul KNEW the sigils were still there but just didn't bother telling anyone because "oooh, daddy promised me an empire, but he lied to me, so I'll settle for a waifu! I did nothing wrong!"

But Madame Masque is a girl and Wells hates girls and un-lazy storytelling, ergo, I don't think he's gonna stick the landing. Like, at this point, Icarus had a better chance of sticking the landing than Wells here. That's how apathetic I've become.

immortaleditor Since: Aug, 2023

Even if he sticks the landing in the way proposed, it won't make any of the terrible storytelling from the previous issues go away and it'll still be a godawful payoff. At best, it means Wells is retconning all of his own work away.

So I gotta ask, what was Zeb Wells known for before this run of Spider-Man?

Because it sure seems like this is gonna be the thing that defines him, and not in a good way.

He had a decent run on New Mutants and the fantastic Hellions mini prior to this. He wasn't especially notable as far as writers go, but he wasn't hated either and a lot of people hoped that Hellions was a sign he was going to be given a chance to make a big splash. Be Careful What You Wish For.

But yeah, I honestly feel bad for Wells because he's basically just the human shield for editorial's nonsense and his reputation probably will take years to recover from this, if it ever does.

Even his fantastic Hellions run underscores the point: Wells is an author with a grungy, dark, and bad humour kind of taste (and also questionable opinions of women). He's the type of guy you would want for say, a Suicide Squad book. He mentions wanting to write Wolverine, and Elektra. Carnage? perfect. But instead he gets Spider-Man.

ASM is (traditionally) the exact opposite of that. So he attempts to write a story about how everything fucking sucks and Peter can get nothing right, and everything is on it's head (aforementioned Osborne and MJ) and nobody likes him. A perfectly fine artistic choice, in a vacuum. If someone was to write apologia, that's where they would start. And that type of storytelling can work, but ASM? No way. Especially any time after One More Day. We just want Spider-Man to save the day.

TL;DR Wells is the St. Anger of ASM runs.

Actually, the Gang War concept does sound like something fit for Daredevil. Definitely the sort of idea Wells would have done regardless of who he was writing.

Not necessarily.

I'm pretty sure Pete's been a part of a few gang wars in his history.

Daredevil probably would be a part of this, but I think he's still busy having amnesia and being a priest.
