Spider-Man General Discussion

Go To

This thread's for the Spider-Man comics and spin-offs, whether they're decades old or brand new.

  • Apart from the main Marvel Universe titles, Ultimate Spider-Man, Spider-Man "What If?" stories, crossovers, guest appearances in other books, Alternate Universe tales and things like Marvel's manga adaptations are all on-topic here.
  • Spider-Man 'family' books are on-topic (as are their own crossovers, guest appearances etc.) - e.g. Spider-Man 2099, Miles Morales, Spider-Woman, Silk, Spider-Gwen, Venom, Carnage, Black Cat, Red Goblin and Spider-Verse.
  • Characters and comics that originated in Spider-Man but are no longer directly connected to the spider-franchise (e.g. Punisher, Silver Sable) are not on-topic, unless you're discussing historical connections and crossovers. If in doubt, check before you write a long post. If this isn't the right place, there's a more general Marvel Comics thread which covers them.

Technically, Marvel's Infinity Comics (and their predecessors, Infinite Comics) are webcomics, not comic books, but it's fine to talk about their Spider-Man stories here.

Discussions that are only about Spider-Man adaptations in other media (films, video games etc.) are off-topic, but discussing the differences between the adaptations and the original comics is fine - as long as spoilers for the adaptations are tagged.

Please follow the spoiler policy rules - tag spoilers for the latest issues, for any previews or content leaks, and for off-topic comics. When including spoiler tags, try to write so that tropers can make an informed decision before viewing them (e.g. which series and issue will they spoil?).

     Original Thread OP
Since everyone likes talking about him. I know little about him(Ironically,I got nearly all I know about him from a Batman thread),but he's apparently important so I made this thread. Enjoy.

[up]Yeah, it's annoying that Spider-Gwen's unique aesthetic and vibe has been shorn off. Her original comics had that "punk rock indie comic" to it that helped set it apart. That's what the best elseworlds and multiverse stories have; each universe having its own style and gimmick and unique take on the series. Once you take that away and just make her yet another 616 spider in the same old art styles as the rest of 616, it takes away something.

It also helped that Kingpin Matt Murdock was a great enemy and foil to the whole punk rocker vibe Gwen was giving.

I actually did read some of Spider-Gwen's run. It was good stuff.

Everything else they've done with her has been questionable at best. Very little original stuff, lots of "shove her into more recognizable places" or "shove in variants of well-known Spider-affiliated properties".

Which, yes, I get it, she's a spinoff of Spider-Man, but you have to eventually develop her, the world she inhabits, and introduce characters unique to her, not just a bunch of characters we're familiar with but slightly changed.

This week's issue revealed the thief's identity: It's not an AU Annie, or even a girl, it's a GUY

Yeah even when the main title didn't fully slip into a mess, I sometimes think even the best of the industry echoed the idea that lead to Armageddon 2001's altered ending.

Putting the most stock into the mystery suspense and not giving an unmasked character some weight after the reveal.

Mostly. I think the Green Goblin stand in reveal planned for Spectacular #261 (Phil Urich before going with a genetic construct in PPSM V2 #18) was decent, but Mad Jack for example well was planned without an identity and it makes me wonder what direction they would have gone in with him.

Namely the reveal underwhelming cause it felt like rather than being yet another supervillain that Jonah wronged/annoyed, that the individual had a more personal grudge with him. Plus Jack saving a Spider-Man from a fall cause (s)he had no grudge against him, seemed like something.

I don't know. Unless De Falco always planned to use him in Amazing as the one who was currently the Rose, it some speculated Jacob Conover might have been the likely candidate.

Mad Jack turned out to be the second Mysterio working with Beck's cousin, right?

What a weird series of choices there.

I think when it came out they inferred it to be Beck's cousin, but the Spider-Man encyclopedia mentioned it to be the second Mysterio yes.

Man, was Superior#2 a good one

There's very real danger for Bailey, as Supernova injures him and he is hospitalized. Peter is the one that checks him in, a nurse praises Peter for bringing Bailey along, but thinks Spider-Man's use of a kid sidekick is irresponsible.

Peter tells Bailey about the two realties he experienced from End of Spider-Verse, one where he was Spidey, another where he never got the powers, in the latter, he had saved Uncle Ben all without powers and recalls one of his new memories with Ben saying how proud he is of him, Peter tells Bailey the same thing, that he is a hero and he is proud.

I'm really surprised at how good a character Bailey is and how great of a dynamic he has with Peter. If it weren't for the dumb Backstory Invader element, I'd have literally zero complaints about him. He's unironically a really good addition to the Spider-Family.

I'm waiting for the reveal that the backstory bit isn't actually true. Perhaps he's from Earth-617, perhaps they'll play it straight and say he really is a Backstory Invader via reality warping, not a Ret-Gone victim.

You can guarantee that someone will at least tease the idea to rattle him, even if they don't make it the truth.

Or worse, someone who doesn't like him and doesn't care about the progress made with him will make the Backstory Invader aspect real.sad

Hopefully, Bailey will have MJ levels of popularity and become as bulletproof as she is.

Honestly, there's a bunch of possibilities - including a possible link to the other backstory invader, The Sentry. I mean, what if Bailey's actually an amnesiac Void returned to life after K'null absorbed him out of Bob?

I mean if I was handling it, I'd play it up for horror. Bailey starts having nightmares of this shadow man pursuing him throughout his waking life, killing and harming those he'd grown to care for. He thinks he's being possessed by this creature, and tries to hide in a church - it has to be a demon!

Peter eventually finds him, kneeling before the altar. Except then Bailey stands up, turns around, and speaks in pure black text boxes "I remember... e v e r y t h i n g ..."

My question is... but why?

It just seems pointlessly mean-spirited given the Lighter and Softer stories that Bailey provides.

Yeah seems way too nasty and cruel. Plus, in case my prior comment didn't make clear, the Void fucking sucks shit and I'd rather it never gets acknowledged again.

I’d like it if the Sentry stayed dead and didn’t show up again

I only know the Sentry from Marvel Zombies and from that time Norman was being pals with the Void.

He was presumably a more 3-D character at some point but circa king in black he got reduced to two things: “oh no someone worfed the Sentry, we’re all fucked!” Or “oh no the Sentry has gone evil again, we’re all fucked!”

And then Knull reduced him to two things in a different way. Some legs over here, a torso over there

[up][up][up]the current mini is a bunch of random people got one of his powers, and the main villain is one guy who got it and decides to kill everyone else who got a power so he can have them all

Just read the big reveal in Spine-Tingling Spider-Man and realized they had the perfect way out for all of the Wells run so far with it and they used it on this

I mean, what better way to tick everyone off by revealing the whole thing was orchestrated by a combo of Mysterio, Spidercide and The Jackal?

Okay, Superior #2 ends on Otto, knowing that Peter and Spider-Man are one and the same, coercing Peter into putting on the Superior Suit.

And there hasn't been any indication that Otto himself will be in a circumstance of being physically fit enough to be Spider-Ock again.

So...false advertising?

[up][up] I mean, I'm pretty sure some of us were insisting that Paul was Mysterio, so… Hey, who's editing Spine-Tingling Spider-Man? Because maybe they need to be the one running the Spider-Office.

Zarius Since: Nov, 2012

[up][up] Spine-Tingling Spider-Man's central story had been about Peter going through a seemingly supernatural experience where all his loved ones couldn't remember who he was and he was being haunted by spooky train conductors, so he was more alienated than usual, then he and they were all kidnapped

His friends and family all turned into demons and chased after him, Peter eventually discovered a captive Mysterio that was generating all this against his will...then he is eventually confronted in costume at a train station by Spidercide, who he was battling when this mini series began, turns out Spidercide was the one who beat Peter and helped to set all this up, having Mysterio construct an entirely false world around him on the instructions of The Jackal

Peter putting on the Superior costume is very Hilarious in Hindsight for me, because I've long felt that Superior Spider-Man as a storyline would've been much better and much more bold and interesting if it didn't bother with the body swap shit and just had Peter become Darker and Edgier on his own.
