Spider-Man General Discussion

Go To

This thread's for the Spider-Man comics and spin-offs, whether they're decades old or brand new.

  • Apart from the main Marvel Universe titles, Ultimate Spider-Man, Spider-Man "What If?" stories, crossovers, guest appearances in other books, Alternate Universe tales and things like Marvel's manga adaptations are all on-topic here.
  • Spider-Man 'family' books are on-topic (as are their own crossovers, guest appearances etc.) - e.g. Spider-Man 2099, Miles Morales, Spider-Woman, Silk, Spider-Gwen, Venom, Carnage, Black Cat, Red Goblin and Spider-Verse.
  • Characters and comics that originated in Spider-Man but are no longer directly connected to the spider-franchise (e.g. Punisher, Silver Sable) are not on-topic, unless you're discussing historical connections and crossovers. If in doubt, check before you write a long post. If this isn't the right place, there's a more general Marvel Comics thread which covers them.

Technically, Marvel's Infinity Comics (and their predecessors, Infinite Comics) are webcomics, not comic books, but it's fine to talk about their Spider-Man stories here.

Discussions that are only about Spider-Man adaptations in other media (films, video games etc.) are off-topic, but discussing the differences between the adaptations and the original comics is fine - as long as spoilers for the adaptations are tagged.

Please follow the spoiler policy rules - tag spoilers for the latest issues, for any previews or content leaks, and for off-topic comics. When including spoiler tags, try to write so that tropers can make an informed decision before viewing them (e.g. which series and issue will they spoil?).

     Original Thread OP
Since everyone likes talking about him. I know little about him(Ironically,I got nearly all I know about him from a Batman thread),but he's apparently important so I made this thread. Enjoy.

[up][up]It also sucks. Since marvel editorial will take this to mean we want more of this.

I haven't read much modern Spiderman comics so I was wondering who is Miles' arch-enemy?

I don't think he has one, but maybe Aaron Davis? He's in 616 now i think, but i don't know if he still tangles with Miles

[up][up]The closest he’s got to one in the comics so far is Rabble, a Teen Genius who essentially resents Miles for winning at life in ways she didn’t and wants to destroy him because of it. Beyond that, Miles hasn’t built up much of a Rogues Gallery for himself. Spider-Verse uses Spot as his archenemy, but the comics have given no indication they plan on doing so.

It's really a shame. Like compare Batman. All of his fellow batfamily members have their own rogues and arch enemies.

Dick has Deathstroke and Blockbuster, Jason has Black Mask or two face, Tim has King Snake and Anarky, Steph has Clue master, Cassandra has David and Lady Shiva, and Damian has Heretic

In contrast.... Miles uh not so much.

Miles also has that one speedster villain lady who really wants to capture miles for breaking the no vigilantes law so she can get time taken off her sentence. But she was just turned into a vampire.

Curious. Why like Batman. Miles couldnt use any of Peter's roles. Would anyone care if Max for example became a prominent foe to Miles.

Miles has a few loan villains from Peter, and a couple knockoffs of Peter's villains.

Prowler would've been a good arch-nemesis, but he's been on good terms with his nephew since they both moved to 616. The second Ultimate Venom could've been another option, but he was killed off and Miles' mom got revived. But again both are just different takes on established characters from Peter's circle.

Spiderverse is making Spot his movie nemesis, but right now comic Spot is throwing hands with Peter... while ripping off his movie counterpart.

At best Miles has Ultimatum, but they barely interact.

I feel like a big problem for Miles existing in 616 is that he’s either stuck with runoff from Peter’s rogues gallery (and doesn’t even get to develop meaningful relationships with them, he’s just a side piece they fight when not on the main Spidey book) or with really lame original villains that have yet to really vibe with him. Some of his baddies like Rabble are a step in the right direction. But on the whole, he’s had a very disappointing run in regards to villains.

Its not like in Ultimate where he could use Peter’s rogues without such problems because he was the one and only Spider-Man and managed to develop good dynamics with them, and even had the luck to get some of Peter’s rogues Bendis hadn’t used til then.

It sucks since Venom has created some solid rogues of his own other than Carnage who he shares with Peter. (Since cletus is one of Peter's central rogues gallery).

Like Merdius, crime master /Bennet Brant (I know Bennet appeared before this but his run in remander was solid), Jack o lantern and knull are solid.

Roderick could be Miles' archenemy. I feel like there's potential there. The Hobgoblin could use some big stories, Miles is in the market for an archenemy.

Every spider needs a goblin. [lol]

I think a big part of the issue is that Miles isn’t allowed to exist in his own little pocket of Marvel. Venom was headquartered Pittsburgh for a lot of the Remender/Bunn run and has been in all sorts of places since the Cates run. Kaine is in Houston. Spider-Gwen has her own universe. Mayday likewise was in her own universe, a future where Peter was retired. A lot of Spiders who avoid being too shackled to Peter do so by carving out their own spaces where they aren’t just swinging around the same city as Peter, so they’re able to develop their own cast and flavor without relying on Peter’s leftovers. Miles doesn’t have his own city, his own world, like that. Hell, some people have noted how he doesn’t even have his own codename and has to share it with Peter, which is a problem for Spider-Man because it’s never done that kind of “there’s three or four different Green Lanterns at once” thing; up until Miles was dragged into 616, it had been just one guy as Spider-Man and the identity is passed on, and Miles has continue being a weird exception to that because Marvel isn’t willing to retire Pete.

Jack O Lantern and Agent Venom's Arch-Enemy vibes where amazing and I miss that [lol]

[up]I honestly love the shared name because of the gags Peter and Miles get where, it's like no "not that Spider-Man the short one" or not you, "the annoying one"

Not-Spiderman and Not-Green Goblin should've been cheap and derivative but it worked.

Both Miles and Roderick are successors to an identity that they made their own and continue to operate even when the originals have returned.

There's a lot more parallels, this shit writes itself.

Probably why Kingsley was the Goblin villain of choice for Mayday for a while.

Yeah I was thinking about that.

And it was Normie Green Goblin that caused Mayday to become Spider-Girl in the first place.

It helps that Roderick is a great villain in and of himself, to such an extent that he arguably wouldn’t even need the Goblin connection and he’d still be a great antagonist.

I need to know who this lady is so that this sentence can make sense in context.

[up][up]Roderick is definitely one of the top Spidey villains. Actually I kinda wish they'd give Norman a break for awhile and focus more on him.

[up]Me too. I’ve talked on here before about how I don’t really like Norman a ton (or rather, I don’t like how he’s been handled since his revival) and feel he’s been dragged past his expiration in 616 and mishandled, and Roderick doesn’t have any of those problems in my opinion. He has a very solid win record against the heroes without being overpowered (and even sometimes gets written as a Villainous Underdog, isn’t hyped up obnoxiously at the expense of other villains, has fun dynamics with a lot of his enemies, has a really good aesthetic and gimmick that doesn’t even need the connection to Norman, and has a good variety of stories rather than becoming completely dependent on bringing up one famous storyline of his over and over in the hope it’ll make people take him seriously. Basically, Roderick is what Norman SHOULD be written like in my view.

On the topic of Kingsley, I just had the thought that you could get a really good What If out of Kingsley jacking the identity of another villain instead of the Green Goblin

That had mostly been an opportunistic thing so what if it was a different guy’s tech that fell into his lap?

A big change off the bat is that he wouldn’t have fallen ass backwards into the grudge goblin grudge Spider Man had

He is a fashion designer so I could totally buy an AU where he decides to mimic somebody like Electro or Vulture or Mysterio simply because he despises their fashion sense and wants to make fashionable versions of their costumes.
