This thread's for the Spider-Man comics and spin-offs, whether they're decades old or brand new.
- Apart from the main Marvel Universe titles, Ultimate Spider-Man, Spider-Man "What If?" stories, crossovers, guest appearances in other books, Alternate Universe tales and things like Marvel's manga adaptations are all on-topic here.
- Spider-Man 'family' books are on-topic (as are their own crossovers, guest appearances etc.) - e.g. Spider-Man 2099, Miles Morales, Spider-Woman, Silk, Spider-Gwen, Venom, Carnage, Black Cat, Red Goblin and Spider-Verse.
- Characters and comics that originated in Spider-Man but are no longer directly connected to the spider-franchise (e.g. Punisher, Silver Sable) are not on-topic, unless you're discussing historical connections and crossovers. If in doubt, check before you write a long post. If this isn't the right place, there's a more general Marvel Comics thread
which covers them.
Technically, Marvel's Infinity Comics (and their predecessors, Infinite Comics) are webcomics, not comic books, but it's fine to talk about their Spider-Man stories here.
Discussions that are only about Spider-Man adaptations in other media (films, video games etc.) are off-topic, but discussing the differences between the adaptations and the original comics is fine - as long as spoilers for the adaptations are tagged.
Please follow the spoiler policy rules
- tag spoilers for the latest issues, for any previews or content leaks, and for off-topic comics. When including spoiler tags, try to write so that tropers can make an informed decision before viewing them (e.g. which series and issue will they spoil?).

Ultimate spider-man is indeed Peter Parker who is in his 30s? and he is married to mj and has two kids with her.
Yeah, this is an Ultimate relaunch in the sense of the original mission statement of a universe new readers can jump into without worrying about continuity, just with hopefully less early 2000s edginess this time.
If this were the old Ultimate universe they'd, like, make Kamala a terrorist or something.

You say you're joking about Kamala being made a terrorist, but let's be real, that is the sort of stupid wannabe-edgelord bullshit that Millar would have done, if there had been any Muslim superheroes back then.
In all seriousness, fuck the original Ultimate Universe, it had so much garbage in it and was not worth preserving. A fresh start was absolutely the right way to go.
As for the "false advertising," from the time it was announced, I got the impression that it wasn't just going to be the old universe, so I don't think calling it false advertising is accurate. Remember when they did that newuniversal thing in the mid-'00s? This is the same situation, using the original version as an inspiration, rather than continuing from it.
X-Men X-Pert, my blog where I talk about X-Men comics.Seconding the need for a fresh start.
Partly because Ultimate Marvel changed its status quo so much, and largely became a trashfire - you'd need some sort of reset button anyway, and then you complicate the jumping-on point for new readers.
Partly because it exists as an alternative to the 616 stories and they're in a very different place now due to One More Day and everything that followed, some of which seemed to be reacting to Ultimate's success.
A take that reflects the Spider-Verse approach to an older Peter and appeals to fans who like Peter and MJ as a married couple sounds good.
(And yes, agreed about Ms. Marvel. Remember Millar turning an Iranian teen into a super-soldier supervillain, as an edgy post-9/11 comment, in Ultimates? I don't think he'd have handled an American muslim teen much better)
Yeah, my thought process for that joke was "what's the most tasteless, offensive, awful thing I can think of that the Ultimate universe could do with a character that didn't exist during the initial run?" knowing that they'd probably actually have done it if she was around then.
Disney100 Marathon | DreamWorks MarathonMiller would definitely have made one of Kamala's family a terrorist at the very least.
Like the guy went all in on making Hank a flat-out abuser, nothing is too far for him.
Reminder DC had to put their foot down on his Authority run because some of his ideas were flat-out repulsive.

And then Jeph Loeb decided to one-up that in Ultimatum by making Ultimate Blob a cannibal who eats the Wasp on-panel.
Yeah, Millar is ass and the original Ultimate Universe was ass too, aside from Ultimate Spider-Man and some of Hickman’s ideas.
The whole “fresh start for new readers free of continuity” idea feels oxymoronic though. Inevitably if this goes on long enough, it’s gonna develop its own arcane continuity, just as the original Ultimate Universe eventually did.
Well for those of us were fans of the Ultimate universe and appreciated it was the Game of Thrones versus Marvel's Dragonlance, the setting was utterly shit on and ruined by writers who didn't respect the characters and deserved to be ridiculed for the trashfire they made of a fantastic shared artistic achievement.
For those of us, the thought they were going to bring it back and reverse the damage they'd done was a breath of fresh air and an acknowledgement they'd done the fans who loved the Ultimate universe dirty.
But no, just another shameless cash crab and cheating fans of their hard earned lucre.
I can't even enjoy it because the "real" Ultimate Spider-Man is still dead along with the rest of the universe.

I'm reasonably sure we've got more changes coming up, which will either move the action to an Alternate Timeline or to another Alternate Universe. I don't expect the Maker's current radically altered world, with its superhumans as the world powers, to be the starting status quo for the ongoing stories.

Oh well, I'll try and give it a chance but I really dislike how so many people seem to have nothing but insults for the Ultimate universe these days. It was very important to getting me and a lot of others back into comics.
Author of The Rules of Supervillainy, Cthulhu Armageddon, and United States of Monsters. The upcoming comics do seem to be using the stuff Hickman established for this setting.
For instance Ultimate Black Panther's plot involves BP combating the new Ultimate Moon Knight who is most likely under the command of Lord Ra and Lord Khonshu of Maker's Illumaniti organization.
