Spider-Man General Discussion

Go To

This thread's for the Spider-Man comics and spin-offs, whether they're decades old or brand new.

  • Apart from the main Marvel Universe titles, Ultimate Spider-Man, Spider-Man "What If?" stories, crossovers, guest appearances in other books, Alternate Universe tales and things like Marvel's manga adaptations are all on-topic here.
  • Spider-Man 'family' books are on-topic (as are their own crossovers, guest appearances etc.) - e.g. Spider-Man 2099, Miles Morales, Spider-Woman, Silk, Spider-Gwen, Venom, Carnage, Black Cat, Red Goblin and Spider-Verse.
  • Characters and comics that originated in Spider-Man but are no longer directly connected to the spider-franchise (e.g. Punisher, Silver Sable) are not on-topic, unless you're discussing historical connections and crossovers. If in doubt, check before you write a long post. If this isn't the right place, there's a more general Marvel Comics thread which covers them.

Technically, Marvel's Infinity Comics (and their predecessors, Infinite Comics) are webcomics, not comic books, but it's fine to talk about their Spider-Man stories here.

Discussions that are only about Spider-Man adaptations in other media (films, video games etc.) are off-topic, but discussing the differences between the adaptations and the original comics is fine - as long as spoilers for the adaptations are tagged.

Please follow the spoiler policy rules - tag spoilers for the latest issues, for any previews or content leaks, and for off-topic comics. When including spoiler tags, try to write so that tropers can make an informed decision before viewing them (e.g. which series and issue will they spoil?).

     Original Thread OP
Since everyone likes talking about him. I know little about him(Ironically,I got nearly all I know about him from a Batman thread),but he's apparently important so I made this thread. Enjoy.

Has Spiderman fought the Russian Red Skull any more times than in the 1968 Spiderman annual?

I doubt it but then again, almost everyone thinks the Russian Red Skull was a bad idea even in the fairly early part of Marvel.

The Russian what ?

That sounds weird. Johan being linked to nazism is far too iconic to not have.

It's a different guy using the name, not Schmidt.

IIRC it was originally supposed to be the same guy, who got Operation Paperclip'd by the Russkies. When they decided to bring back Schmidt himself they revealed the Soviet Skull was a different guy, Albert Malik, who was trading on the original's reputation for the intimidation factor.

Ultimate Universe deets from NYCC!

  • Hickman's Ultimate Spider-Man will not only be Peter Parker, but actually a middle-aged one. Hickman describes him as "Ultimate Peter B. Parker".
    • And apparently there's variant covers (art?) teasing the Black Suit and the 2099 suit?
    • I am immediately on board with this. grin
  • Ultimate X-Men is written and drawn by Peach Momoko. Hickman says it's a take so unique, you couldn't pitch it.
  • Ultimate Spider-Man is coming January 2024, Ultimate Black Panther is on February 2024, Ultimate X-Men is on March 2024.
  • There will also be an Ultimate Moon Knight and Hickman urges us to check the moon in Ultimate Black Panther's cover!
  • Spekaing of covers, check out the covers for Ultimate Universe, Ultimate Black Panther, Ultimate X-Men, and Ultimate Spider-Man!

The Soviet Red Skull killed Peter's parents? That's confusing because Peter broke into the Red Skull classic's home to get his files and find out.

The Finisher sabotaged the plane they were travelling on the orders of the Russian Red Skull who had found out that they were traitors in his organisation.

And apparently the Finisher’s brother the Gentleman is who leaked the info to him. Although the Gentleman is pretty obscure.

I have to wonder if the success of the Ultimate Spider-Man book is due in part to the moribund status of the main Spiderbooks at the time. I think I remember reading that was a reason as to why.

I could believe it. ASM had been in a rough spot for awhile before JMS started writing it. And I won't even get started on the past decade and a half...

Speaking of deep cuts, in the new video game the post-credits scene reveals Otto has been writing a book called 'The Final Chapter'...maybe Aunt May will come back from the dead?

“IIRC it was originally supposed to be the same guy, who got Operation Paperclip'd by the Russkies.”

The first appearance of the Communist Red Skull was in the extremely brief 50s revival of Marvel’s Golden Age heroes. There was no explanation then, it looked more like swapping him from being the figurehead for one enemy of the day to another.

EDIT: Misremembered, it does seem intended to be the same guy.

[up][up] My guess is it's about the final chapter of the "If This Be My Destiny...!" story, which heavily featured Ock.

I grew up reading classic Spidey so to learn there was another big story with that name baffled me.

So if I go to the previous page and uncover the first spoiler which has no title except "you know" its going to be completely unrelated to the game?
