Spider-Man General Discussion

Go To

This thread's for the Spider-Man comics and spin-offs, whether they're decades old or brand new.

  • Apart from the main Marvel Universe titles, Ultimate Spider-Man, Spider-Man "What If?" stories, crossovers, guest appearances in other books, Alternate Universe tales and things like Marvel's manga adaptations are all on-topic here.
  • Spider-Man 'family' books are on-topic (as are their own crossovers, guest appearances etc.) - e.g. Spider-Man 2099, Miles Morales, Spider-Woman, Silk, Spider-Gwen, Venom, Carnage, Black Cat, Red Goblin and Spider-Verse.
  • Characters and comics that originated in Spider-Man but are no longer directly connected to the spider-franchise (e.g. Punisher, Silver Sable) are not on-topic, unless you're discussing historical connections and crossovers. If in doubt, check before you write a long post. If this isn't the right place, there's a more general Marvel Comics thread which covers them.

Technically, Marvel's Infinity Comics (and their predecessors, Infinite Comics) are webcomics, not comic books, but it's fine to talk about their Spider-Man stories here.

Discussions that are only about Spider-Man adaptations in other media (films, video games etc.) are off-topic, but discussing the differences between the adaptations and the original comics is fine - as long as spoilers for the adaptations are tagged.

Please follow the spoiler policy rules - tag spoilers for the latest issues, for any previews or content leaks, and for off-topic comics. When including spoiler tags, try to write so that tropers can make an informed decision before viewing them (e.g. which series and issue will they spoil?).

     Original Thread OP
Since everyone likes talking about him. I know little about him(Ironically,I got nearly all I know about him from a Batman thread),but he's apparently important so I made this thread. Enjoy.

[up]I don't think that really matters in-universe. And it's not like Gwen is the only lost loved one Spider-Man writers mention. I remember a time when Spider-Man fans were absolutely sick of hearing about Uncle Ben.

I think love unlimited was one of the more real Gwen stories, because they allowed her to be upset her dad died and hate Spidey in a way they kind of gloss over usually.

Ok... I got badgered to read the Wells run of Spider-Man through five issues.

To quote a certain horse:

"No sir, I don't like it."

Like, aside from how Paul shows up out of nowhere, it just reeks of being misery porn for Peter Parker, where he loses the trust of everyone, even MJ and May. But not just that, he's nothing but a punching bag in two issues all by Tombstone who for some reason, they decided to give him a flashback of why he's like that. It's like if it was done just because Well is a Tombstone fanboy? I don't get it. And even worse where he can't stand against the Vulture, despite being capable of beating him many times and needs Norman for help.

So yeah, this feels like an Anti Spider-Man comic made by someone who wanted to make their own OC.

But regardless, it's not as bad as FUCKING SUPERIOR SPIDER MAN.

I forced this man at gunpoint to share our suffering.

It will make great tribute for when Superior Spider-Man comes back.

Ok... I got badgered to read the Wells run of Spider-Man through five issues.

To quote a certain horse:

"No sir, I don't like it."

To quote a certain ogre:

"Join the club. We've got jackets."

Those jackets say The "We're-Convinced-That-Zeb-Wells-Doesn't-Like-Spider-Man" Club.

Like, ignoring Paul (and the fact that we had to wait forever for his deal because Wells probably thought he could milk it through the whole run without any buildup), a lot of the other stuff like Tombstone and Vulture being able to shove Peter into the brink of death when Peter has easily been able to wipe the floor with them in the past, making Norman and Peter buddies when even the Spencer run made it clear that Peter thought Norman was still a sack of crap, the not giving Peter anyone to bounce off off (Kamala could've easily been that, but Wells and Lowe were apparently too dense to realize that), and the really bad art from JRJR just makes this run a hard pass to folks who love the Web-Head.

Though that said, the art from Patrick Gleason and Ed McGuiness is really good...which makes me wonder if they're doing this run for the money, because if you told me to draw that scene about MJ and responsibility from the Hellfire Gala (IYKYK), I would've felt like I lost a piece of my soul.

Miles killed that girl that was mad at him. Cindy is going through various film genres. And Gwen had a bunch of knock offs cloned from her

Cindy was fighting her nemesis who had trapped her in dreams and then became a dream demon herself, gwen was cloned with dna using the sinister six and they tried to use her DNA to kill off every gwen Stacy in the multiverse, and miles is going to therapy

Right. Plus, their counterparts already exist in Earth-65, with the exception of Sandman.

I can only assume it's because they all look different from their 616, with the exception of Vulture. Like maybe Peach Momoko's designs came first.

[up]×3

They mainly said the character isn't part of the game's story, not necessarily that they don't exist. Which make sense, there's already a lot going on storywise.

[up][up] Why do I get the sense that Insomniac-Spidey encouraging 616-Spidey to get back together with his MJ is Christos Gage's way of telling us (as much as he can, without incurring the wrath of editorial) that he agrees with most fans in believing that "One More Day" and/or Paul was a huge mistake?

In regards to the Wells-Lowe run, I think all that can really be said about it in the end is that it’s the ultimate logical conclusion of everything wrong with the Spider-Man book since One More Day locked it into this utter living hell. The point where Spider-Man has officially ceased to be Spider-Man in any meaningful way.

His personality is unrecognizable. His history — previously one of the simplest in comics — has been made a convoluted mess of overlapping retcons that bears little resemblance to anything that’s happened prior. His actually interesting supporting cast is dwindling away piece by piece — at best forgotten about, at worst vindictively wrote off as “dragging him down” — leaving with nobody but Aunt May, Norman, and Jonah to hang out with. His family is in shambles. His rogues gallery has become nothing but a stand to prop up the only two villains Spider-Editorial cares about, Goblin and Ock. His books have lost all semblance of “relatability”, one of the main draws of the character. He’s lost any progression as a character or story, to the point that they refuse to even let him turn thirty. His comic has become nothing but the same handful stories repeated ad nauseam despite the supposed reasoning for all this being that the character was “limited” by his marriage; Green Goblin gets whammied into being just Norman but then becomes Goblin again and goes “all out” (while having zero actual lasting impact), Doc Ock becomes good then evil then good then evil, more Inheritor Spider-Verse bullshit, Jackpot, Curt Conners flailing back and forth between himself and Lizard, characters dying and coming back over and over, clones clones clones clones…

The character has become a parody of himself. He’s a pathetic loser manchild who’s in his mid-thirties but tries to keep pretending he’s a high schooler, has driven away all his social group except the aging mother figure he’s creepily attached to, is completely trapped in his past clinging to memories of a girl whose been dead for decades and an uncle whose been dead for even longer, he has no friends his own age and seemingly prefers the company of teenagers, his love life is a mess of constant break ups that go nowhere and failed attempts to reunite with the one woman on planet earth who can tolerate him for longer than a year, his villains constantly humiliate him or fail to reform because of him, his supporting cast members randomly become evil every other week, he can’t hold down a job despite supposedly being a genius, he STILL flakes on people because of being Spider-Man despite years of experience, and so on and so forth.

That’s what he’s been reduced to by One More Day. Just a constant slog of meaningless wheel-spinning and misery porn that appeals to nobody other than a small Good Ol Boys club of editors projecting their weird psychosexual issues on a comic book character and ghost-writing the book through the only writers permitted to stay on, the sycophants who won’t rock the boat, with anybody who tries to improve things forced off the title. It’s downright nauseating and especially baffling when you consider how the rest of Marvel is doing pretty damn good right now. But their flagship title is like… that.

As a fun fact, a few years ago, me and my best friend — who are amateur writers — made a little pitch thing for a run on Spider-Man, which we revisit from time to time and work on. It’s basically an Immortal Hulk-style horror run that homages stuff like Serial Experiments Lain and involves Spider-Man and his cast slowly going insane from the years of constant retcons, static status quo, and attempts to keep him and MJ apart. Obviously it’s a big parody and deconstruction of the Post-OMD state of the comic. It’s HAUNTINGLY similar to the current state of the real comic.

Rant over.

[up]Man...does this post ever sum up what I(and I'm guessing a great many/most readers/former readers) feel about the book. OMD cast Peter and every other character in the book into a Hell dimension to which they seemingly have no escape. It's just endless repetition and misery...and it's beyond tiring. This truly is what Mephisto would inflict.

[up][up][up] My guess is that because Spider-Man has long since become the mass-marketable, family-friendly "face" of Marvel, similar to Mickey Mouse, they're afraid to do much in the way of full-on horror stories with the character, unlike the Hulk (who kinda had a horror-esque premise baked right into the character, even back during Stan and Jack's original run while the Comics Code Authority was still at the height of its power). Then again, Deadly Neighborhood Spider-Man came out last year, so maybe they were testing the waters there and might actually do an "Immortal Spider-Man" in the future to buck that trend?

[up][up] In the Spider-Man Unlimited Infinity Comic that Marvel has on their Marvel Unlimited app. It's not available on PC, even if you're a subscriber, just through the mobile app, because of its Infinite Canvas format.

[up] Yep, that's exactly it.

Well, that's good to know.

[up][up][up] Man, that was epic. I wonder if we can use this as a quote for a Quotes page for the Wells run.

As a fun fact, a few years ago, me and my best friend — who are amateur writers — made a little pitch thing for a run on Spider-Man, which we revisit from time to time and work on. Obviously it’s a big parody and deconstruction of the Post-OMD state of the comic. It’s HAUNTINGLY similar to the current state of the real comic.

However you and your friend's project turns out, I'll bet anything that it's leaps and bounds better than the bunk Wells and Lowe are force-feeding us. Heck, I'll bet neither of them would even know what Serial Experiments Lain is.

I'm shocked 'Immortal Spider-Man' isn't more of a thing, Marvel did have two "Superior" books running at the same time for both Spidey and Iron Man.

Maybe they're worried that an 'Immortal Spider-Man' would mean Al Ewing will end up cooking and the Spider-Editorial Office would rather pull their own teeth or horde Spidey like Gollum and the One Ring than letting Al Ewing cook. (Incidentally, what if Ewing winds up calling all his definitive takes on all the Marvel characters "immortal", like "The Immortal Iron Man" or "The Immortal Captain America", and then a complete collection of all these immortal titles would be called "The Immortal Marvel Universe"? That sounds like it'd be genius.)
