Spider-Man General Discussion

Go To

This thread's for the Spider-Man comics and spin-offs, whether they're decades old or brand new.

  • Apart from the main Marvel Universe titles, Ultimate Spider-Man, Spider-Man "What If?" stories, crossovers, guest appearances in other books, Alternate Universe tales and things like Marvel's manga adaptations are all on-topic here.
  • Spider-Man 'family' books are on-topic (as are their own crossovers, guest appearances etc.) - e.g. Spider-Man 2099, Miles Morales, Spider-Woman, Silk, Spider-Gwen, Venom, Carnage, Black Cat, Red Goblin and Spider-Verse.
  • Characters and comics that originated in Spider-Man but are no longer directly connected to the spider-franchise (e.g. Punisher, Silver Sable) are not on-topic, unless you're discussing historical connections and crossovers. If in doubt, check before you write a long post. If this isn't the right place, there's a more general Marvel Comics thread which covers them.

Technically, Marvel's Infinity Comics (and their predecessors, Infinite Comics) are webcomics, not comic books, but it's fine to talk about their Spider-Man stories here.

Discussions that are only about Spider-Man adaptations in other media (films, video games etc.) are off-topic, but discussing the differences between the adaptations and the original comics is fine - as long as spoilers for the adaptations are tagged.

Please follow the spoiler policy rules - tag spoilers for the latest issues, for any previews or content leaks, and for off-topic comics. When including spoiler tags, try to write so that tropers can make an informed decision before viewing them (e.g. which series and issue will they spoil?).

     Original Thread OP
Since everyone likes talking about him. I know little about him(Ironically,I got nearly all I know about him from a Batman thread),but he's apparently important so I made this thread. Enjoy.

It was actually really good and I weirdly wanted a lot more of Octo-Gwen.

She was the steampunk Wrench Wench we never knew we needed.

[up][up] Well, apparently she has a grand tour with the band. That may count.

I'm still hoping for Doctor Sax and the Hypno-Hustler as support acts.[up]

Emily Kim's Silk series have been good, and it was interesting to see her take on Gwen. I was kind of hoping she'd stay with both characters.

On a related note...

The dreaded MCU synergy hasn't fully extended to the Sony spider-films (I didn't see a big Morbius comic relaunch, for example), but do you think we'll get more Silk, Madame Web or Kraven solo stuff to accompany those films?

I didn't say the Gwen Clone Saga was bad though.

Prolly not for me though.

I didn't like Shadow Clones much and it was weird that they never explained why the 616 Sin Six were in Gwen's universe.

I wonder if it was case of not knowing that Gwen's version of those characters look different and then claiming it was the 616 versions after being informed.

I mean, this isn't remotely as bad as either this, Sins Past, or One More Day.

The only thing memorable about it is Kamala's death and that got reversed in a day.

The worst part of this run is it's BORING and unfun.

Okay, maybe those are still really bad.

But I argue the Zeb Wells run is still a special case of bad in that it's just plain spiteful. Like, needlessly so.

As we pointed out for some time, barring other interpretations like DOFP, Peter seems to be at his most pathetic here. I almost feel like he could have a fight with an inanimate rock and the rock would somehow win.

But now, in ASM #31, we have Peter quipping about his unmasking in front of Kamala, saying he reserves it for kids with incurable diseases and...no, Zeb. There's been like two or three poignant stories where Peter met with terminally ill kids and you don't. Just. Quip. About. That. No counterpoints, it's just...NO.

[up][up][up][up] Honestly that quip is only reminding me of better stories of Peter being the friendly neighborhood Spider-Man to kids.

Plus yeah while this run hasn't gotten as bad as Sins Past and OMD as needlessly ruining Peter's love life (OMD) or character assassination on his love interest (Sin's Past). It's still crap.

In terms of fights this Peter is a glorified jobber. I remember a reddit comment saying if ASBAR Batman was "Crazy Steve" Zeb Wells' Spider-Man is "Pathetic Todd".

Sad thing is this story with Pathetic Todd is canon.

I was curious and found that thread, but what's really interesting to me is the comment below it about fans of other comics like the X-Men, or Avengers, just... apologizing to Spidey fans. I don't feel like that's something that normally happens.

You know, with Tom Holland not wanting to return for another Spider-Man without a decent script and taking a hiatus from acting in general.

Combined with Sony doing a better job with the Spider-Man IP (Video Game, Spiderverse and Venom).

I can't help but think this run is the same as what Marvel did with X-Men and the Fantasic 4. Purposely damaging the IP because they don't have 100% of the rights to it anymore.

I feel like the fact that they killed Kamala off in Spidey's book to sell everyone on the mutant thing is proof that they have faith in Spidey as a brand.

[up] And the symbiotes everywhere, Bailey's new book, the Silk and Spider-Gwen minis...

I think they may be trying for edgy and controversial and botching it, but they're definitely not downplaying the IP.

Oh they have faith in it. It's just the intention is purposely just to piss off fans of the character.

Both Wells and Lowe have admitted to it in interviews. Problem is crash tv storytelling has a limited shelf life.

They have to know that hate views are gonna die out.

If they don't then Wells and Lowe are as incompetent as Vince Russo in WCW.

@lalai: At least all star batman is hilarious. And has good art thanks to being made by Jim Lee. This run fluctuates between being awful or Boring in both story and art.

Well the story flat out wouldn't work with the Sinister Six of Gwen's world.

This is about having cute Gwen Stacy cosplaying as Rhino and Vulure stories after all.

Gwen’s universe made the mistake of trying to be creative with the supervillains it adapted instead of just ctrl c ctrl v

Indeed.

Because this way gets us steampunk Gwen Ock.

:)

But, honestly, "The Sinister Six visit Gwen's world and it's not even interesting enough to make a full issue out of it" is kind of a hilarious meta-commentary even if it was entirely by accident.

Maybe they weren’t the 616 Sinister Six. Maybe they came from the Generic Iconic universe, where everything is conveniently always in its most iconic state forever

So they won't give Peter and MJ a kid but they will give Peter and Matt one? I see how it is, Marvel. Then again, Matt is probably a better partner than Felecia.
