Spider-Man General Discussion

Go To

This thread's for the Spider-Man comics and spin-offs, whether they're decades old or brand new.

  • Apart from the main Marvel Universe titles, Ultimate Spider-Man, Spider-Man "What If?" stories, crossovers, guest appearances in other books, Alternate Universe tales and things like Marvel's manga adaptations are all on-topic here.
  • Spider-Man 'family' books are on-topic (as are their own crossovers, guest appearances etc.) - e.g. Spider-Man 2099, Miles Morales, Spider-Woman, Silk, Spider-Gwen, Venom, Carnage, Black Cat, Red Goblin and Spider-Verse.
  • Characters and comics that originated in Spider-Man but are no longer directly connected to the spider-franchise (e.g. Punisher, Silver Sable) are not on-topic, unless you're discussing historical connections and crossovers. If in doubt, check before you write a long post. If this isn't the right place, there's a more general Marvel Comics thread which covers them.

Technically, Marvel's Infinity Comics (and their predecessors, Infinite Comics) are webcomics, not comic books, but it's fine to talk about their Spider-Man stories here.

Discussions that are only about Spider-Man adaptations in other media (films, video games etc.) are off-topic, but discussing the differences between the adaptations and the original comics is fine - as long as spoilers for the adaptations are tagged.

Please follow the spoiler policy rules - tag spoilers for the latest issues, for any previews or content leaks, and for off-topic comics. When including spoiler tags, try to write so that tropers can make an informed decision before viewing them (e.g. which series and issue will they spoil?).

     Original Thread OP
Since everyone likes talking about him. I know little about him(Ironically,I got nearly all I know about him from a Batman thread),but he's apparently important so I made this thread. Enjoy.

I don't buy Otto wouldn't utterly destroy Norman in any encounter they had. But I buy it because Otto is terrible at hero-ing.

Sinister Six beat the Avengers once due to Batman prep time biz. Not hard to believe they could punch up with the X-Men since Spider-Man soloed the Secret Wars era X-Men

And basically any given fight is who the writer wants to win.

Like how Wolverine (has knives) soloed Count Nefaria (energy being that beat up the Avengers and Thunderbolts at once)

Yeah I was re-reading the first Secret Wars the other day and Spiderman straight up flexes on the entire X-Men. This was before he got the black suit even.

Spidey really is at his best when everyone, including the reader, thinks he's the underdog and he reminds us no, not really.

I recall Norman pointing out that despite both of them fighting Peter for so long, him and Otto rarely ever crossed paths when they finally threw down during the finale of Superior.

Though to be fair, both of them were dead for a period of time (Norman for much longer than Otto).

Still it's funny how little they interacted until recently.

I'd love to see a full Norman vs Otto fight, with both of them at their full evil best. Neither of them is used to fighting someone who won't pull his punches and is willing to be just as ruthless (they've only seemed to fight each other when one is trying to be a good guy) so it'd be a very interesting fight for both.

Norman's a lot more manouverable than Peter and has more destructive long range options, but Otto's arms give him a lot of reach and let him multitask (he can defend himself from an attack with one arm while throwing anything rubble he can get his hands on with the other).

....why have we never had this fight?

Oh right. He hacked Norman's Gold Goblin gear recently didn't he?

Even though Norman seemingly went out of his way to make sure that wouldn't be an issue.

Well, I guess it's only a fight if Otto doesn't just worm his way into Norman's gear before the fight can even start.

Otto is up there with Doctor Doom and the Leader for "villains who are the world's smartest man" candidates.

Norman is a crooked businessman who plagiarized his business partner's inventions. He's about as much a genius as Elon Musk.

Isn’t Norman at least somewhat legitimate in the genius front? Like, he did steal a lot of stuff but he also created a lot himself?

Norman is of the Henry Ford/Edison "I am smart enough to understand what I am marketing" types. Which is a very easy thing to understand as an academic. You have the people who do the science and you have the administrators who slap their name on it.

But Norman's big inventions are the Goblin Glider (a drone in the 1960s - which is implied to have also been stolen) and the insanity inducing Goblin serum.

Question: do Peter's kids qualify as mutants because they were born with their powers, or mutates because their dad is a mutate?

Mutates unless they very specifically have the X gene

Which is ridiculous Bothering by the Book.

Especially since many Spider-Man team ups had the exact question of Peter asking them whether his kids might be mutants and what to do.

I dunno, I can believe a group as insular and self-obsessed as the X-Men not permitting anyone outside of a very specifically defined group to be called a mutant.

I asked this question myself some time ago.

Everyone else already answered, but they apparently do not count as mutants.

I am amused that the adaptations do have Norman as Always Someone Better to Otto, especially PS 4 and Spectacular.

And to be fair, Norman's scientific chops are depending on the writer, since he did make a cure for cancer just to torture Deadpool, and in the Superior arc, hacked all of Otto's technology and turned it against him.

As for a fight with Green Goblin and Doc Ock, I'd say the advantage is with Green Goblin for having all sorts of gadgets, armor, super strength and a healing factor.

While Otto is a fat middle aged guy with robot tentacles. Otto is usually something of a glass cannon, it might be hard to get past the tentacles, but once you do, Otto goes down fast.

Heck, Gobby could just pull out a gun from his glider and shoot Otto dead.

Good point.

Hell, Otto taking punches from super strong opponents (well, opponent) for years is what caused Ends of the Earth, and Superior.

That being said, Otto's likely smart enough to realize Norman just needs to get close, and would prepare appropriately.
