Spider-Man General Discussion

Go To

This thread's for the Spider-Man comics and spin-offs, whether they're decades old or brand new.

  • Apart from the main Marvel Universe titles, Ultimate Spider-Man, Spider-Man "What If?" stories, crossovers, guest appearances in other books, Alternate Universe tales and things like Marvel's manga adaptations are all on-topic here.
  • Spider-Man 'family' books are on-topic (as are their own crossovers, guest appearances etc.) - e.g. Spider-Man 2099, Miles Morales, Spider-Woman, Silk, Spider-Gwen, Venom, Carnage, Black Cat, Red Goblin and Spider-Verse.
  • Characters and comics that originated in Spider-Man but are no longer directly connected to the spider-franchise (e.g. Punisher, Silver Sable) are not on-topic, unless you're discussing historical connections and crossovers. If in doubt, check before you write a long post. If this isn't the right place, there's a more general Marvel Comics thread which covers them.

Technically, Marvel's Infinity Comics (and their predecessors, Infinite Comics) are webcomics, not comic books, but it's fine to talk about their Spider-Man stories here.

Discussions that are only about Spider-Man adaptations in other media (films, video games etc.) are off-topic, but discussing the differences between the adaptations and the original comics is fine - as long as spoilers for the adaptations are tagged.

Please follow the spoiler policy rules - tag spoilers for the latest issues, for any previews or content leaks, and for off-topic comics. When including spoiler tags, try to write so that tropers can make an informed decision before viewing them (e.g. which series and issue will they spoil?).

     Original Thread OP
Since everyone likes talking about him. I know little about him(Ironically,I got nearly all I know about him from a Batman thread),but he's apparently important so I made this thread. Enjoy.

also making deals with the devil, something that's only ever happened in the comics as far as I know.

Peter in Midnight Sons accepts a deal with Mephisto to free Eddie Brock's soul from Lilith. It was the only alternative to killing him.

Mephisto then surprises Spidey by only asking that they wipe out the new vampire infestation as the soulless undead created by Dracula are useless to him.

Which is surprisingly accurate as everyone thinks it's a horrible idea but doesn't degrade Peter.

@Red Hunter 543:

I think the whole bit about the Symbiote corrupting Spidey actually came from the 90s cartoon.

Yep, the symbiote corrupting Peter was a Ret-Canon from the '90s cartoon that was so well received, people frequently don't even realize it was a retcon or that the idea originated from one of the TV shows.

In the original Black Costume Saga, the problem with the symbiote was that it was hijacking Peter's body in his sleep in order to make him do more superhero things in order to feed off of his adrenaline, which had left him exhausted when he woke up and probably would have killed him from sleep deprivation and whatnot. Eddie and later hosts (both of Venom and of other symbiotes) don't appear to have had this problem, as far as I know.

Venom learned to accept boundaries after their first failed relationship. Simple as that.

Spectacular combined the two angles, where the symbiote did take control of Peter while he slept in a really cool scene but also made him more aggressive.

I just finished the entire run of the Unbeatable Squirrel Girl and, honestly, it makes me retroactively hate a good chunk of the Spencer run that I actually was really fond of before. Basically, Spencer's treatment of Squirrel Girl's use of Kraven pisses me off. Kraven actually got to show a lot of humanity and get back a good chunk of his badassery in Squirrel Girl.

It wasn't even necessary because Kraven said at the end that he couldn't be the nice person she wanted him to be.

A funny thing is that since the last issues of Unbeatable came out after Hunted, North had a time traveling Kraven come back to have a final heart to heart with Doreen, and he even told her not to believe everything she hears about him.

It's the closest thing to closure Kraven really got.

Rek-Rap makes a cameo this week in ASM, teasing involvement in a future arc.

Peter also fuses with his love-sick Octopus arms, says he's actually 'missed' this sort of thing, and colours them red

[up] Otto, did you bodyjack Peter again?

Otto's plan in this week's issue feels almost meta in a way.

He's trying to use Norman to see if he had any of the memories mephisto took from Otto, and it doesnt work. Otto gets mad about Norman's redemptive turn because he himself wasnt allowed to do that, and tries to forcibly make him evil again.

Ironically, Otto himself went back to evil because of Spider-Norman.

Read an interesting article about Web of Spider-Man #32, the first issue of Kraven's Last Hunt, digging into how anger and performance are two underappreciated aspects of Peter's world and how the storyline uses the visual language of comics to emphasize Peter's (fake) death and Kraven's descent into madness.

I'm reading some retro Spider-Man newspaper comics a friend bought off of E-Bay and apparently Stan gave Peter a different middle name as MJ refers to him sometimes as "Peter Q Parker" instead of the usual "B". There are also alternate 'first encounters' with Namor and Doctor Strange that the strip writers forgot about when they reintroduced them to the strip in the 2010s when I was reading it. Oops. I assume this was because Stan stepped back from the strip (all without taking his name off the credits), and passed the torch to Roy Thomas behind the scenes without telling him what he'd written previously.

It was also interesting to learn Peter and MJ had some marriage trouble even in the daily strip, with MJ at one point suggesting a trial seperation because she worried about Peter too much and was becoming something she hated, a nagging wife! Peter resolves this by temporarily quitting as Spider-Man, and only returns to the role to make money off commercials advertising sneakers. MJ eventually cools down and the marriage continues to be as blissful as it had ever been.

MJ used to own a DOG in the strip as well, which explains why Ms. Lion was once packaged with an MJ action figure in the 2010s, and Dan Slott even paid homage to the idea in his story for Amazing Fantasy#1000 depicting Peter and MJ as an elderly couple, their dog there was even called 'Daily'

Dan Slott dropped by the CBR Spider-Man forums to tease that his Superior Spider-Man comeback is a 'new take' and begins an 'era', so it's not just a one-in-done

It’s funny how Slott might redeem his spider reputation by just not being Wells right now

Reminder that Slott was regarded as straight-up good until Superior, and even the backlash to that was more about the mean-spirited interactions with fans than the story itself.

I didn't agree with a lot of Slott's decisions but I never thought his stories were terrible either. There was a lot of fun in them and willingness to try new things.

But I will say I'm only looking forward to Superior Spider-Man a little bit because Doctor Octopus was handled SO TERRIBLY afterward that it's hard to even begin dissecting the level of character assassination.

Look, I know he has to return to being a villain but it's just....wow. Awful every appearance.

[up][up][up] Yeah, that was actually a big part of his forum visit, he was defending the sales of Superior because fans are trying to reinvent history and play down it's success at the time

It is pretty telling that sales improved for Marvel with a story that took Peter out of the picture...sort of.

The big problem with Superior's marketing was Slott loudly insisting the change was permanent and for the better and dunking on anyone who objected to this. Granted, a lot of the objections came from fans that apparently thought Slott was being serious, which is also hilariously stupid.

It's a kind of similar, if much less extreme, case to the whole "The director of Cannibal Holocaust actually murdered the actors" thing. The publicity stunt was stupid and ill-advised, but the viewers who took it literally and not as the obvious publicity stunt it was were also really, really stupid. tongue

Slott isn’t alone in asshole obviously baiting marketing. I remember Secret Empire insisting Stevil was definitely the really real Steve

It’s not a good idea yet people keep doing it

Dan Slott IMO, isn't a bad writer (though he certainly is flawed.), and does really understand Spider-Man's appeal and character it's just that as a writer he's held back by OMD AND overstays his welcome.

Like after Superior, the following Parker Industries era is just not my jam at all. But I really liked Go Down Swinging barring a certain twist.

I thought Clone Conspiracy was fairly good. My biggest problems with it were that little was done with the resurrected villains beyond just Slott showing off his knowledge of Spider-lore ("Oh hey, that replacement Green Goblin that lasted like five minutes is back!") and that the thing where the clones have to take a certain drug only Ben can provide or they turn into mindless zombies was introduced super suddenly; I suspect it was one of those "Oh wait, I forgot to make him the bad guy!" kind of things. [lol]

Yeah, like something that gets lost in the hate on Slott is that if he had his way he would've had Peter and MJ back together before Spencer tried.

Hell, Slott STARTED the Renew Your Vows-verse.

I do agree the stuff post Secret Wars wasn't as good as what he did before, but Go Down Swinging was really worth the patience.
